Abstract
1466476 Tubular heat exchangers; boilers MITSUI SHIPBUILDING & ENG CO Ltd and MITSUI PETROCHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 March 1974 [6 March 1973] 9559/74 Headings F4A and F4S In a heat exchanger used for cooling hot gas and/or for generating steam and comprising a cylindrical shell 1 provided with a plurality of open ended gas passage tubes 2 each having a field tube inserted therein, each field tube comprises an inner tube 3 and an outer tube 4 the upper ends of which are connected respectively to the bottom of a water supply tank 21 and the bottom of a separator drum 20. The ends of the tubes 2 are flared and have a hexagonal or square shape; the upper ends are welded together to form a tube plate, while the lower ends are free to expand relative to one another. The upper peripheral edge of the tube bundle is welded to a ring 5 which in turn is welded to a drum mantle 6, whereas the lower peripheral edge of the tube bundle is sealed by a gland 10. In use gas, such as cracked gas, is introduced through an inlet 31 lined with insulating material 7 and passes upwardly through the spaces between the tubes 2 and 4 before exhausting from outlet chamber 18 via outlet 17. Steam generated in the tubes 3, 4 is exhausted from the separator drum 20 through outlet 23. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown), used for cooling gas to a low temperature, two bundles (24, 25) of gas passage tubes (2) are arranged in series one above the other with an intermediate gas outlet chamber (26) therebetween. When a reduced cooling of the gas is required, the upper gas outlet (28) is closed by a valve (30) and a pressure gas such as steam is introduced through a branch nozzle (29) to prevent the gas being cooled from entering the upper tube bundle (24) said gas being cooled is thus exhausted from the intermediate chamber (26). The tubes (2,3,4) may be arranged horizontally.
