Abstract

1457869 Non-skid or anti-slip compositions A R PARKINSON 12 Dec 1973 [12 Sept 1972] 32471/72 Heading C3R [Also in Divisions C4 and B2] Non-skid or anti-slip properties are imparted to a surface by applying to the surface a matrix material having hollow particles incorporated therein and thereafter breaking and/or removing at least some of the particles at the surface of the matrix material. Suitable hollow particles are made of glass, ceramic, plastics material, metal, an alloy or a mineral. They are preferably in the form of spheres and have a particle size of from 5 to 5000 microns. Suitably the matrix comprises plastics material, glass, cement, a mineral, drying oils and other paint vehicles. The breaking and/or removal of the particles may be effected by abrasive or other mechanical action, by chemical attack or by thermal shock. The particles may be incorporated into the matrix while the matrix is in a plastic condition whereafter the matrix is hardened to a cohesive mass. In the examples compositions comprising a polyurethane prepolymer, solvent mixture, hollow glass microspheres, boiled linseed oil, drying agents, white spirit and polyurethane paints are applied to a wooden surface, a section of an iron open staircase, the deck of a boat, the well-deck of a ship and sanded plywood. The surfaces are treated with abrasive cloth or paper.
