Abstract

1335732 Electro-photographic development INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 18 Jan 1971 [2 Feb 1970] 2340/71 Heading G2H Electro-static images on reusable photoconductor elements in electro-photographic copying machines are developed with a resinous toner applied in the presence of boron nitride having a hexagonal layer structure. Specifically the boron nitride is applied by (1) a cleaning brush which contacts the cleaning apparatus housing or knock-off bar which is coated with or extrudes boron nitride (2) a web impregnated with boron nitride, (3) spraying the photo-conductor element with boron nitride before development, (4) using a developer housing or development apparatus coated with boron nitride, (5) using a developer donor belt coated with boron nitride, (6) using a developer carrier particles coated with, or toner particles containing, boron nitride, or (7) using a toner/carrier developer composition mixed or sprayed with boron nitride. The boron nitride facilitates cleaning and prevents toner build-up on the photo-conductor element. The examples describe the use of a developer comprising pigmented copoly (styrene/n-butylmethacrylate) copolymer milled with 0À1 or 0À25% boron nitride having particle size below 5u and either red-coated glass beads or polytetrafluorethylene grit as carrier. A build-up of boron nitride on the photo-conductor surface may be removed by adding 2% of 1-6Á diatomaceous silica to the developer mix.
