Abstract
1335366 Treatment of organic waste INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS CORP Ltd 11 Nov 1970 [11 Aug 1969] 29709/69 Heading C1C; A process for the treatment of organic waste sludge comprises periodically passing a batch of waste sludge into a treatment chamber, releasing bubbles of air from air bubble guns, within the body of waste sludge in the container so as to mix and agitate the waste sludge and so as to aerate the sludge and provide oxygen for the aerobic degradation thereof, periodically, after degradation of each batch of waste sludge decanting the lighter and thinner fractions of sludge and periodically at considerably longer intervals removing settled deactivated waste sludge from the container. The lighter and thinner fractions of waste sludge may be decanted preferably automatically at predetermined time intervals into a settling container for flocculation and settling of the suspended solids therein. This flocculation may be aided by the addition to said sludges during decantation of a flocculating agent. The treatment is preferably directed to farm waste such as animal excrement. Relatively clean water withdrawn from the settling container may be used to wash said farm waste into the treatment container. A suitable plant for carrying out the above processes is shown in Fig. 1 wherein waste sludge is passed via inlet 19 into compartment A and is mixed and aerated by constant action of air supplied from bubble guns 4. A decanting pipe which comprises a right-angle elbow form 7 is periodically operated by actuator 11 so that the radial section 7b moves from the position shown in Fig. 1 to an upwardly inclined position; by this means, the overflow from compartment A to compartment B is controlled. Relatively clean water may be withdrawn from compartment B by pump 18. The decanting pipe may be protected by screen 20 to prevent blockage. A horizontal baffle 21 may be provided in the compartment A to prevent the decanting of heavier sludge fractions.
