Abstract
1313531 Electric incandescent lamps THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 16 April 1970 18294/70 Heading H1F A method of making an incandescent filament lamp of the type in which the internal components of the lamp are supported on sheet metal fingers comprises the steps of making, from a metal sheet, a supporting structure having a plurality of fingers 20 interconnected at their roots by a bridge 21, securing the ends of a filament such as 27 or 28 to two of the fingers remote from their roots, embedding the fingers remote from their fingertips in an insulating bridge 29, as shown, or in the seal of the lamp envelope to hold the fingers in fixed positions relative to one another, and removing the bridge 21 by cutting along the line 30 to isolate the fingers electrically. A reflector 26 may be secured to one of the fingers or made integrally therewith. The sheet is made from a refractory metal, such as molybdenum, molybdenum-rhenium alloy or tungsten, or an alloy matched to the expansion coefficient of the material of the envelope, such as an iron-nickel-cobalt or nickel-iron alloy. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 6-8, not shown) a supporting structure for a planar filament in a projection lamp is made with two sets of fingers (14<SP>1</SP>, 14<SP>11</SP>) facing towards one another. A fuse link (Fig. 12, not shown) may be mounted in the structure.
