Abstract
1386049 Venturi gas scrubber FMC CORP 15 Feb 1973 [30 May 1972] 7466/73 Heading B1R A gas scrubber comprises a gas conduit with a rectangular cross section venturi passage (Fig. 6) formed by (a) converging opposing walls 52 and parallel side walls 58 forming an inlet passage, and (b) diverging opposing walls 56 and parallel side walls 58 forming an outlet passage; wherein a gas guide insert 14, rectangular in cross section and having opposed diverging walls 62 in a leading edge position and opposed converging walls 64 in a trailing edge position, is inserted just downstream of the point of minimum construction 60, the maximum width of the insert being equal to the minimum width of the venturi and the angle of divergence of the wall 62 being equal to that of the side walls 56 so as to create two scrubbing throats 72, 72a of rectangular crosssection followed by two exit throats 54 progressively enlarging in the direction of gas flow, the gas conduit containing at its inlet end scrubbing-water spray pipes 30. The insert 14 is slidably movable along the axis of the venturi to adjust the axial distance between points 70 and 60 so as to allow adjustment of the width of the venturi throats 72, 72a, the movement being effected by a hydraulic cylinder acting on a lifting arm 84 (Fig. 8 not shown) which is slidably located in a slot in one of the side walls 58. The angle of divergence of walls 64 is chosen to produce a substantially constant ratio of width to length at the various axial positions of the insert. The outlet of the venturi (Fig. 1) directs the wet gas via duct 18 to a cyclone separator 20 with a tangential inlet. The dewatered gases are expelled through exit 26 by fan 24, the water being collected in surge tank 40 and recycled to the venturi inlet.
