Abstract

1378429 Pneumatic tyres UNIROYAL 9 Feb 1972 [17 Feb 1971] 5992/72 Heading B7C A radial-ply pneumatic tyre comprises a pair of bead regions 2, 2a each having an annular bead reinforcing member, e.g. 3, 3a; a carcass ply 1 extending from one bead region to the other and having portions 1a, 1b turned up around the bead reinforcing members; and an annular reinforcing strip 5, 5a of woven fabric at each side of the tyre; each strip 5, 5a being folded about the associated bead reinforcing member to form two portions of unequal length and being located outwardly of the ply 1 with respect to the bead reinforcing member; the longest portion of each strip 5, 5a being longer than the associated turned-up portion la or 1b of the ply 1 and having its free end disposed between the associated bead region and the midheight of the associated sidewall of the tyre; the shortest portion of each strip 5, 5a being longer, as shown in Fig. 1, or shorter, as shown in Fig. 4, than the associated tumed-up portion 1a or 1b of the ply 1; and, at each side of the tyre, the radial distances of the free ends of the longer one and the shorter one of the turned-up portion 1a or 1b and the shortest portion of the strip 5 or 5a respectively being approximately H/2 and approximately H/3, where H is as shown. The shortest portion of each strip 5, 5a may lie axially outwardly of the ply 1 as shown in Fig. 1, or axially inwardly as shown in Fig. 4, and the free end of the longest portion of each strip may lie at at least a quarter of the radial sectional height of the tyre above the radially inner edge of the associated bead region. The fabric of the strips 5, 5a may have a regularly interwoven warp and weft and may be made of cords or threads of metal, (e.g. steel, aluminium), plastics, nylon, rayon, or glass fibre, the warp being of the same or different material to the weft. The tyre may have a breaker assembly comprising two layers 6 of substantially circumferentially extending metallic cords.
