Abstract

1371723 Copper compounds: bromine: sulphur trioxide TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 14 July 1972 32953/72 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions B1 C2 C5 and F1] Catalytically-active crystalline material having a specified X-ray diffraction pattern and the empirical formula, expressed in terms of oxides, xCuO.yAl2O3.nH2O wherein x is from 1 to 3, y is from 1 to 4 and n is a positive number, is prepared, in the form of a layer adherent on a support, by a procedure wherein the support is contacted, at a temperature preferably of from 100 to 212‹ F., with a solution which is prepared from an aluminate, an ammoniacal reagent, for example ammonia or ammonium hydroxide, and a copper oxide, hydroxide or salt, for example carbonate nitrate, sulphate, chromate, acetate, benzoate or oxalate, and which has a Cu to Al molar ratio of from 1À5 to 5 and a NH3 to Cn molar ratio of at least 4. The aluminate may be prepared from aluminium chips or fragments and a base, for example lithium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide or a quaternary organic hydroxide such as tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide. Contacting may be effected in water, methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol or propyl alcohol; the resulting coated support may be calcined at a temperature of from 300 to 1000‹F. As exemplified, the crystalline material is prepared fom aluminium chips, sodium hydroxide, ammonium hydroxide and either copper sulphate (Example I) or copper nitrate (Example II or III). The structure comprising the catalyticallyactive layer, which may have a thickness of from 1 to 100 mils., and the support, which may be contained in a casing or tube, may be in the form of bells, bars, chain, mesh, plates, saddle, sheet, tubes or wire and may be formed of steel, stainless steel, nickel, titanium, a sintered metal material or a refractory or ceramic material, for example silica, a high melting glass or a refractory metal carbide, silicate or oxide such as magnesia, may be used in the conversion of sulphur dioxide to sulphur trioxide in stack gases; Example II refers to the use of a structure comprising a nickel-chromium-iron alloy mesh support in the oxidation of hydrogen bromide to bromine.
