Abstract

1342027 Making combustible gas PULLMAN Inc 19 April 1971 [22 Sept 1970] 27121/71 Heading C5E Reducing gas containing at least 88 mol. per cent H 2 is made by contacting a hydrocarbon feed with steam over a steam-reforming catalyst which contains at least 0À5 wt. per cent, and preferably 2 to 20 wt. per cent calcenated as the metal, of added active alkali metal or alkaline earth metal compound, at elevated temperature and at a pressure in the range atmospheric up to 250 p.s.i.g. and a steam to carbon ratio not exceeding 1À5 : 1, and contacting the partially reformed gas so produced over a steam-reforming catalyst free from added active alkali metal or alkaline earth metal compound. The reaction is carried out in an externally heated tubular reactor, one catalyst being superimposed on the other, and H 2 -rich spent gas from a reduction zone may be recycled to the reactor. Feedstocks include natural gas and CH 4 -rich cracked refinery gases, and may contain acetylenes and diolefins. Outlet temperatures are at least 1225‹ F. in the first stage, and at least 1750‹ F., preferably in the range 1800‹ to 2100‹ F., in the second stage.
