Abstract
Gas containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen is produced by the reaction of a hydrocarbon feedstock having a B.Pt. up to 350 DEG C. with carbon dioxide and optionally steam in the presence of a catalyst comprising 3-80% by weight nickel (calculated as the oxide), a refractory support, and an alkaline compound of an alkali or alkaline earth metal in an amount, calculated as potassium oxide, of at least 0.5% of the weight of the nickel and the refractory support together, the pressure, temperature, carbon dioxide ratio and, if present, steam ratio being together chosen to prevent carbon deposition. The feedstock may be predominantly methane, when a pressure in the range 100-600 p.s.i.g. is used; alternatively the feedstock may be a straight run petroleum distillate boiling in the range 30-220 DEG C., and the conditions of operation may be a pressure up to 15 p.s.i.g., a temperature above 750 DEG C. and a CO2 ratio in the absence of steam of at least 3.0 or a pressure between 100 and 250 p.s.i.g., a steam ratio of at least 2, and the sum of the CO2 and steam ratios being at least 4.0. A general temperature range of 500-1000 DEG C. and pressure range of 0-750 p.s.i.g. is disclosed.
