Abstract

1298004 Bookbinding IPC SERVICES Ltd 4 May 1971 [6 May 1970] 21919/70 Heading B6A Book fillers formed of loose-leaves 1, Fig. 2, are bound into a book by jogging the leaves to round the spine edges 2 to which is then applied an adhesive preferably carried in a backing strip 3, Fig. 3, which is also provided with a pair of paper strip elements 4 forming shoulders which assist in supporting the book filler in the book completed by encasing in covers (21, 22, Fig. 6). The manually operable bookbinding machine comprises a pair of clamps 5 operated and controlled by fluid cylinders 30 which cause the clamps to open when the book filler is jogged by a vibrating plate 6 which is movable vertically relative to the clamps 5 and oscillated by a cam drive 27. The jogged book filler with rounded back is then clamped by the clamps, the vibrating plate 6 lowered and overlaid with a backing strip 3 supporting also the elements 4 and the plate 6 which is composed of laterally movable sections 8, 9 is heated by a support plate 12. The movable sections 8, 9 are then moved apart and the support plate 12 raised such that the spine of the book filler is contacted by a recess 16 in the support plate and the spine of the filler is formed by closing the movable sections 8, 9 provided with recesses 17 for accommodation of the elements 4. In an alternative embodiment the hot melt adhesive on the binding strip may be replaced by polyvinyl acetates applied to the filler spine by spraying or brushing prior to application of the strip to the spine.
