Abstract

1296883 Phosphating metal surfaces CHUBB FIRE SECURITY Ltd 19 April 1971 [4 March 1970] 10453/70 Heading C7U A process for coating a metal comprises employing a solution containing phosphate, zinc, chlorate, and nitrate in the ratios by weight of P 2 O 5 = 1, Zn = 0À2-0À7, ClO 3 = 0À2-0À5, and NO 3 = 0À1-0À3, the total acid points being 8-25 times the free acid points, and the solution being periodically replenished by a composition containing P 2 O 5 = 1, Zn = 0À2-0À7, ClO 3 = 0À01-0À2, and NO 3 = 0À01-0À05. The total acid points and free acid points are defined as the numbers of cubic centimetres of N/10 sodium hydroxide required to titrate 10cc of solution when phenolphthalium and methyl orange are used respectively as indicators. The solution may also contain 0À001-0À025% w/w nickel, cobalt, or copper as a metal accelerator, tartaric acid, citric acid, calcium, or borate, and the free acidity may be adjusted with zinc carbonate, zinc oxide, caustic soda, or sodium carbonate. The solution may be applied at a temperature of 85-130‹F. The metal treated is ferrous or zinc. The process may be conducted by spraying.
