Abstract

1,273,856. Tandem axle suspensions. E. WACKENHUT. 7 Aug., 1970 [8 Aug., 1969; 22 Oct., 1969], No. 38092/70. Heading B7D. [Also in Division F2] In a tandem axle suspension including stepped laminated springs, a spring 17 on each side of the vehicle has its region or regions of greatest depth extending across the axles 11, 11a and its two ends, which extend beyond the axles, engaged with spring seatings 14 on the vehicle frame 10. The master leaves of the spring 17 are continuous, the front ends being formed with eyes 18 secured to the front seating 14 by pins 19 and rubber bushes, and the rear ends slidably engaging the rear seat 14 through rubber blocks. Upturned rear ends on the master leaves cooperate with the rear seating 14 to limit spring displacement, and the rear seating 14 includes an adjustable pressure plate for laterally locating the spring. The supporting leaves of the spring 17 may be continuous between the axles or be interrupted between the axles in stepped fashion. One or more air springs 24 are interposed between the spring 17 and the chassis 10. The leading axle 11 is driven and the load thereon may be varied by means of an hydraulic or pneumatic ram 27.
