An electromagnetic relay for modular mounting has its armature and polepieces extending from opposite ends of a glass envelope and magnetically connected by an elongate member having a portion, on which the relay operating coil is mounted, extending alongside the envelope. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the elongate member 20 extends from the armature terminal 12 to a position between the contact poles 16, 17 of a mercury-wetted change-over contact device 10 having sealed envelope 11. The end 21 of the member 20 is provided with insulation 19b and is also adjacent an insulated polarizing magnet 19. The coil 20a surrounds the member 20 and its outer diameter is less than that of the contact unit 10. A branched elongate wire member 27 (Fig. 6) may be magnetically coupled to two contact units 10 having a common polarizing permanent magnet 31. A plurality of permanent magnets (not shown) may be provided and the free contact end of the armature may bridge a pair of fixed contact poles in each position. With this arrangement (Fig. 11) the insulated end 40a of the elongate member 38 extends only between one pair of poles 36 which extend further from the contact unit 33 and are polarized by -magnets 42.
