Abstract

Copolymers of 40-75% molar vinylidene chloride and 60-25% acrylic ester are prepared by emulsion polymerization using "delayed addition" technique; less than 20% of the monomers is added initially and the remainder added over a period exceeding one hour. The surface-active agent may also be added step-wise. In some examples a small amount of acrylamide with or without acrylic acid is also present and in another a mixture of two esters, methyl and butyl acrylates, is used. Sodium persulphate and sodium metabisulphite are used as catalyst. The polymer emulsion is used for coating and a paint composition exemplified also contains titanium dioxide, tetrasodium pyrophosphate and polyvinylalcohol.
