Abstract

1,199,139. Dry powder fire extinguishers. FIREWARD Ltd. 14 April, 1969, No. 19031/ 69. Heading A5A. A fire extinguisher of the dry powder/compressed gas type which may be operated intermittently comprises casing 1 in which is mounted cage 6 enclosing compressed gas bulb 15 inverted over firing pin 14, spring-loaded plunger 25 movable to urge the bulb against the pin, gas tube 16 leading from aperture 13 in the bottom of cage 6 to the bottom of the casing, and outlet tube 4 surrounding the cage and the gas tube up which compressed gas and powder in admixture can pass in passage, via apertures 11 (Fig. 2) in the cage, to plunger 25, which also acts as an outlet valve for the mixture. In operation, hand lever 32 pivotally attached to cap 3 depresses plunger 25 against the action of spring 24, forcing the gas bulb against the firing pin. Released gas, e.g. CO 2 , passes down tube 16 and forces powder extinguishant, e.g. NaHCO 3 . up tube 4, through apertures 11 and thence via bore 28 adjacent stem 29 of the plunger to outlet nozzle 35. Release of the plunger closes the lower end of outlet bore 28 so that the gas/powder jet can be intermittently controlled by simple operation of lever 32. Accidental operation is prevented by locking pin 34 in upper part 27 of the plunger. Cap 3 is also provided with integral grip 37, and safety valve 38 consisting of brass tube 39, compression spring 40 and ball 41. Bracket 42 provides a mounting means for the extinguisher.
