Abstract
1,198,803. Making electrical contact rivets; forging; extruding. JOHNSON MATTHEY & CO. Ltd. 12 July, 1967 [26 July, 1966], No. 33598/66. Headings B3A, B3H and B3P. A trimetallic rivet-type electrical contact is made by deforming a bimetallic billet to form an extruded shank and a forged head, the original cross-sectional area of the billet being greater than the cross-sectional area of the shank but less than the maximum cross-sectional area of the head. In one embodiment, Figs. 9 and 11, a billet 18 consisting of a copper cylinder 19 bonded to a silver cylinder 20, is partly extruded to form the shank, after which the blank is transferred to a die block 24 and the head 28 cold formed by a tool 27. In another embodiment, an extrusion die 36, Fig. 12, is moved downwards to extrude a shank from the billet 30 located on a plunger 35 in a spring-loaded die 32. After the billet has been expelled from the die 32 by the plunger 35, the extrusion die 36 carrying the partly formed contact is moved laterally and then downwards on to a cold forging die (41) (Fig. 15, not shown) to deform the unextruded part of the billet into the head. The contact head is removed from the forging die (41) by a plunger (43) and the contact expelled from the extrusion die 36 by a plunger 37. The contact head may be other than cylindrical such as square, frusto-conical or part spherical, or may be elliptical shaped, formed from a billet of rectangular section.
