Abstract
803,015. Making cupped articles; extruding; jointing by forging. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. April 27, 1956 [Jan. 28, 1955], No. 2602/55. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of making by impact extrusion a composite metal member, such as a cartridge case, Fig. 2, having a part 9 of extrudable metal and a part 7 of relatively non-extrudable metal comprises preforming the non-extrudable part 7 to the required shape having a keying recess 7c, Fig. 1, placing the part 7 and a slug 8 of extrudable metal in a die 4 and impact extruding the slug 8 by means of a punch 3 to cause it to flow to the required shape 9, Fig. 2, and also to flow at 8 into the recess 7c, thereby uniting the parts together. The member is removed from the die by a knock-out pin 6. The part 7 may be of steel or brass and the slug 8 of aluminium, aluminium alloy or gilding metal; alternatively the part 7 may be of heat-treated high-carbon steel and the slug 8 of annealed low-carbon steel. Subsequently the centre part of the base 10 is machined away to form a flange 12, Fig. 3 (not shown). The extruded part may comprise the middle portion of a composite member, disposed between two end parts of non-extrudable metal.
