Abstract
1,196,244. Electrically propelled invalid carriages. CABLEFORM Ltd. 24 Oct., 1967 [26 July, 1966], No. 33671/66. Heading B7H. In an electrically propelled invalid carriage having a pair of driving wheels which are independently driven to provide steering and one or more castor wheels, the drive to each driving wheel is provided with a continuously variable electrical control system. Preferably each control system is of the D.C. pulse control type in which control of the mark space ratio of the pulses controls the effective current. The motors are controlled by a single universally pivoted lever 55 movement of which in a fore and aft direction controls forward and reverse movement of the invalid carriage and in a transverse direction operates the motors differentially. Movement of the lever 55 is limited by contact with an asymmetrical ring or hole in a plate 65 to permit a higher forward than reverse speed of the invalid carriage. The lever 55 passes through two perpendicular slots 62 in two plates 61, to which are secured two perpendicular pairs of axially slidable bars 59 for controlling the respective motors. Movement of each pair of bars 59 actuates respective microswitches 63 for forward and reverse travel and a potentiometer 45 which controls the semi-conductor control means and hence the current to the motor.
