Abstract
1,032,870. Thermal switches. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc. Dec. 28, 1962 [Nov. 30; 1962], No. 48959/62. Heading H2B A thermal switch 10 comprises a cup-shaped conductive housing 12, a conductive spring 14 biasing a snap-acting thermal element 16 against a stop 48 provided by a flanged metallic ring 22, and a fixed contact member 30 insulated from the housing 12 and having a contact portion 32 engageable by a movable contact 18 carried by thermal element 16. Factory calibration of the switch comprises positioning contact member 30 of silver alloy in a metal tube 26 of nickel-iron alloy which is then crimped at 34 and welded at 36 after being sealed, using a glass sealant 24, into steel ring 22. The glassto-metal hermetic seal is of matched seal construction or a compression seal. The thermal element 16 is an inherently snap-acting bimetal and the spring 14 is a beryllium-copper washer of undulated shape (Figs. 6, 7, not shown). The stop or abutment part 48<SP>1</SP> of the flanged metal ring 22<SP>1</SP> may be bevelled (Fig. 8, not shown). Housing 12 and terminal tab 44 are of steel and are gold-plated to improve conductivity.
