Abstract

1,013,636. Wrenches. J. ALLEGRAUD. Dec. 9, 1963 [Dec. 12, 1962], No. 48510/63. Heading B4W. An adjustable spanner comprises a body 1 having a fixed jaw 1 and a movable jaw 2 slidably mounted in the body and having serrations on its lower surface, means for biasing the movable jaw towards the fixed jaw, a locking member 3 mounted on the body and having a serrated surface complementary to the lower surface of the movable jaw, the member 3 being movable towards and away from the movable jaw 2 so as to engage and disengage the serrated surface of the movable jaw, means biasing the locking member in a retracted position and actuating means including a cam pivoted on the body for moving the locking member towards the movable jaw. As shown in Fig. 1, the actuating lever 4 is integral with the cam 8. A leaf spring having opposite ends engaged respectively with the lever 4 and movable jaw 3, tends to urge the movable jaw in the closing or opening position depending on the direction of rotation of the actuating lever. In a modification, Fig. 5, a tension spring associated with jaws 1, 2 biases the jaw 2 towards its closing position. An arm 10 pivoted coaxially with the actuating lever, has a projecting nose which engages the movable jaw 2 and tends to urge it into open or closed position depending on the direction of rotation of the actuating lever. A pawl 11 is provided for latching the cam and lever in the locking position. In another modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the actuating linkage includes a pair of toggle links. In another modification the actuating member comprises a member guided for vertical sliding movement on the body and engageable with the cam for rotating it between its locking and releasing positions.
