Abstract

1,094,211. Exhaust silencers. WALKER MANUFACTURING CO. Oct. 23, 1964 [Oct. 30, 1963], No. 43293/64. Heading F1B. An exhaust silencer system comprises resonant silencing devices 9, 11, tuned to different harmonics. A further silencer 7 for silencing high frequencies is also provided and comprises a number of small chambers (43), (45), (47), (49), (51), Fig. 2 (not shown) formed by pinched in portions (33) of an outer sleeve surrounding a perforated inner pipe (29). The silencer 9 comprises an approximately rectangular cross-section outer casing 71 Fig. 5 (not shown) forming a resonator chamber around the perforated flow pipe 79, the chamber being tuned to the third harmonic of the fundamental frequency in the exhaust pipe. The casing (71) has an inner layer of stainless steel and an outer layer of aluminized steel. The silencer 11, Fig. 7, which is tuned to the fifth harmonic, comprises a flow pipe 123 perforated over the portion 111 and surrounded by a shell 107 to form a first resonant chamber 117 connected through openings 127 in the end of the shell 107 to a second resonant chamber 119 formed by an outer casing 101. The devices 9, 11 are arranged at antinodes of the respective harmonics. In the V- engine shown in Fig. 1, each bank of cylinders has a separate silencing system 3, 5.
