Abstract

Boring head with rotary cutters, for attachment to a train of boring bars or to the transmission of a high speed turbo drilling motor, has arms, each extended by a downwards inclined trunnion for a rotary inserted tooth cutter. The rotary cutter is supported by an arrangement of bearings guiding its rotation whilst stops prevent any axial motion. The bearing and thrust surfaces are protected against the abrasive environment by seals and are lubricated from a reservoir in a closed circuit. The lubricant is returned from the bearing and thrust surfaces to the reservoir, and a pump is set up between the rotating cutter and the trunnion. The pump is formed by spiral grooves in the bore of the cutter and pref. these are machined in a bush pressed into the bore. The pumped is thus driven by the motion of the cutter and the circulation of the lubricant is ensured. The lubricating system works so that breakdown of the lubricant is prevented, and lubrication generally is improved. The cutter bearings are cooled so that the tool can work at very high speeds and with long life.
