Patent Trade Mark Attornerys Level 10, 10 Barrack Street SYDNEY NSW 2000 Complete specification for the invention entitled "An edge covering".
The following statement is a full description of this best method of performing it known to me:invention, including the S007 450O 1 5020 -IA
DESCRIPTION
The invention is concerned with an edge covering, in particular for movable partition units, having a covering profile of plastics material, which exhibits an areal frontal cover with fasteners for fastening to a frame profile fixed to the partition.
Edge coverings of that kind are known in the case of movable partition units. For optical dressing of the join between two adjacent partition units as well as for the improvement of the sound insulation these known edge coverings have sealing lips made as separate plastics profiles which project in between the edge or joint faces of the cover-panels lying on the outside of the partition units and in doin- so rest against the two endfaces of the two adjacent partition units, lyinz opposite one another :1 0: at a predetermined distance apart. The sealing-lip profiles employed for a °this are in the case of the known edge coverings fastened either into Ion "0 gitudinal grooves in the frame profile fixed to the partition or directly O o0 to the inside of the cover-panels of the partition units. The fitting of the sealing-lip profiles demands a separate working step and is therefore 0 0.0 particularly time consuming and costly.
o The problem of the invention is therefore to develop further the edre t covering of the kind mentioned initially, in such a way that the equipment of the edge covering with sealing lips is simplified.
In the case of the edge covering of the kind mentioned initially this problem is solved in accordance with the invention by the sealing lips being moulded onto the longitudinal edges of the frontal cover.
The advantages of the invention lie particularly in that sealing lips are moulded in one piece onto the frontal cover of the covering profile so 1 that by fitting the covering profile to the frame profile fixed to the S 1 partition the sealing lips are present too. The separate working steps .which are necessary for fitting the known separate sealing-lip profiles are thereby eliminated. Furthermore the edges of the door or wall units are covered over by a cohesive frontal cover running up to the sealing lips, whereby a cohesive, quiet and particularly shapely and tasteful impression results.
In accordance with a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention i ARTHUR S. CAVE CO. (si inature of Declarant I PATENT AND TRADE MARK ATTORNEYS
SYDNEY
2 the sealing lips moulded onto the longitudinal edges of the frontal cover are formed by beading over the longitudinal edge zone so that the sealing lips have an approximately circular or oval cross-section if the free longitudinal edge is beaded over nearly as far as the back of the frontal cover.
Preferably the covering profile consists of a suitable elastic plastics material the elasticity of which may increase in the region of the sealing lips so that contact of the sealing lips against the covering panels of the partition units is realized over an adequately large area.
In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention, in about the middle region of the frontal cover magnetic fillets are arranged running S' in the longitudinal direction, which cooperate with corresponding magnet- 0' Sic fillets of opposite polarity in the complementary covering profile aro 00 ranged on the adjacent edge of the adjacent partition unit. Through mago o netic fillets of opposite polarity lying opposite one another the adjac- 0000 ent edges of adjacent partition units under the force of attraction between the magnetic fillets may be connected together particularly tight ly and true to position, whereby simple positioning and a tight close fit of the partition units is guaranteed with correspondingly improved sound insulation.
o In accordance with a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention the magnetic fillets may be inserted either in appropriate recesses in the frontal cover or extruded into the frontal cover during production of the covering profile. For the accommodation of power suplies which may possibly be necessary it is particularly to be preferred that one or more electrical leads be extruded into the magnetic fillets or outside the magnetic fillets into the frontal cover.
The fasteners by which the covering profile is fastened to a frame profile, as a rule metallic, fixed to the partition, are preferably rade as catch flanges, on the free ends of which are seated catch noses which engage in corresponding catch grooves in the frame profile. Alternatively or in addition the covering profile may also be screwed or glued to the frame profile and/or to the cover-panels of the partition units. In that case the covering profile is preferably so made that along its length it 3 bears by the fasteners or the frontal cover against the frame profile fixed to the partition, and that the sealing lips fill out the shadow join between the covering panels of adjacent partition units.
The sealing lips may be fitted either to only one of the complementary covering profiles of adjacent partition units or alternatively also to the two complementary covering profiles cross-sectionally adapted to one another. The sealing lips are then bead'-d over in mirror image of one another.
In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention the coverpanels lying on the outside of the partition units are connected either directly or via elastic plastics profiles to the frame profile fixed to the partition.
Advantageous further deveiocentsr of the invention -are character izd by' 00 00 0 0 4 4( Ot o 4 I J-T- j 4 1 i 4 ii Two embodiments of the invention are explained in greater detail below with the aid of the drawings. There is shown in: Figure 1 a cross-section through two interengaging complementary edge coverings of partition units adjacent to one another: and Figure 2 a representation corresponding with Figure 1, of a further embodiment of the edge covering.
Figures 1 and 2 show for two different embodiments a horizontal cross section through two adjacent partition units 1 which are joined together at the edges. In order to cover over the partition units at their edges functionally and elegantly a frame profile 4 of, aluminium is fastened to the edge of the frame 2. The frame profile 4 has two longitudinal flanges 6 which run approximately in the direction of the main plane of the wall and are bent round at an angle at their free ends 8. The longitudinal flanges 6 have undercuts 7 for receiving catch elements.
The frame profile 4 fixed to the partition is covered over by means of a covering profile 20 of plastics material having an areal frontal cover 22 r 4 onto which catch flanges 30 directed towards the frame 2 are moulded, which have at their free ends catch noses 32 which can engage springily in the undercuts 7 in the longitudinal flanges 6 of the frame profile 4 in order to snap the covering profile 20 onto the frame profile 4. For a particularly firm connection the longitudinal flanges 6 of the frame profile 4 and the corresponding catch flanges 30 on the covering profile preferably run the whole length of the edge of the partition unit 1. In order furthermore to guarantee a pressure-stable fitting of the covering profile 20, bearer-flanges 34 are moulded on next the frame 2. which run in the longitudinal direction at a predetermined distance from the catch flanges 30 and support the covering profile 20 against corresconding areas on the longitudinal flanges 6.
The frontal cover 22 of the covering profile 20 decreases in thickness of material towards its longitudinal edges and finally continues into sealing lips 26 which are formed by beading over the longitudinal edge zone and have adequate elasticity of material and shape for the desired seal- Sing purposes. The sealing lips 26 extend in both the embodiments from SFigures 1 and 2 into a gap la formed between the cover-panels 16 of the adjacent partition units 1 and there rest against the endfaces of the cover-panels 16 in order in this way to seal off the gao la acoustically and optically.
In the embodiment in accordance with Figure 1 the cover-panels 16 lying Son the outside are provided with layers 18 of claddin7 lyinz on the outside, which are bent round at right angles at the edges to form the gap la at the join between partition units 1 resting against one another, and at a bent-round free end 18a are fastened by means of screws. rivets, etc 52 to an elastic plastics profile 50. The plastics profiles 50 are connected to the longitudinal flanges 6 of the frame profile 4 (Figure 1).
i In the embodiment in accordance with Figure 2 the cover-panels 16 lying on the outside of the partition units 1 are covered over at their endfaces by covering fillets 17. The cover-panels 16 are in that case so dimensioned that with partition units 1 resting against one another a gap la is likewise formed at the join between adjacent covering fillets 17.
The sealing fillets 26 moulded onto the longitudinal edges of the frontal cover 22 of the sealing profile 20 project a predetermined distance into L 1. I- -i"i -li Li 'YD~ the gap la and in doing so are acted upon slightly by pressure between the covering fillets 17 at the edges of the cover-panels 16 so that the sealing lips rest with a good sealing action against the cover-panels 16.
In the embodiment represented in Figure 2 the width of the gao la is reduced towards the outside, the covering fillets 17 forming for the sealing lips 26 a widened chamber which opens towards the outside in a gap la of reduced width.
The cover-panels 16 lying on the outside as already in the embcdiment from Figure 1 are provided on their inside with a plastics profile which may be connected to the free end 8 of the longitudinal flarne 6 of the frame profile 4 fixed to the partition.
In the embodiments represented the covering profile is made concave in its cross-section towards the frame 2. In order to realize a tiht areal connection between adjacent partition units 1 the edge covering cf the adjoining partition unit 1 then has a covering profile 10 which has a correspondingly complementary shape, that is, a convex cross-section, but for the rest is likewise snapped by catch flanges 11 onto a frame profile 4 fixed to the partition. In the embodiments represented the complementary covering profile 10 has no sealing lips moulded onto the zr.zitudinal edges. But alternatively it is also possible to construct the complementary covering profile 10 with sealing lips at the edges tco. which then project into the gap 1p preferably in mirror image of the sealing lips 26 shown on the one covering profile The frontal cover 22 of the covering profile has a magnetic fillet running in the longitudinal direction, which cooperates with a corresponding magnetic fillet 42 in the complementary coverin7 profile 10 and is to realize a magnetic closure between the two adjacent partition units 1.
The magnetic fillet 40 is fitted in a recess 28 in the frontal cover 2?: it may be extruded into the frontal cover 22 during production of the covering profile 20 or after production of the covering profile say be pushed into a corresponding recess 28.
