Abstract
A decorated extrudate is disclosed which is intended, in use, to serve as a seal for a reciprocable sheet of glazing material in a motor vehicle. The extrudate can be a waist seal (28 or 50) or a glass run channel (16) provided in at least one zone with flocked fibres (39; 23, 24, 25; 62) intended to abut a sheet of glazing material. The extrudate (28, 16 or 50) has at least one portion (33, 18 or 53) intended to fit over a lip of a motor vehicle, which portion (33, 18 or 53) is provided with a decorative trim strip (35, 26 or 66). There is disclosed the provision within the relevant portion (33, 18 or 53) of a groove (33A, 18A or 63) having side walls with recesses, so that the edge regions of the decorative trim strip (35, 26 or 66) can be captured within the recesses and held securely. This obviates the need for adhesive and can also prevent rain or other adverse elements entering between the layers of a multi-layer decorative trim strip (35, 26 or 66). <IMAGE>

in respect of the or each groove, two filler elements having substantially the same crosssection as the groove and located in the respective end regions thereof.
According to the present invention there is provided a decorated extrudate intended, in use, to serve as a seal for a reciprocable sheet of glazing material and suitable for use on a motor vehicle, the decorated extrudate comprising:
an extrudate of which at least one first part is intended to abut the sheet of glazing material and is covered by a flocked fibrous material, and of which at least one second part has at least one elongate groove which extends the length of the extrudate and has side walls each provided with a recess, the or each second part being intended to fit over a lip of a motor vehicle; and
at least one decorative trim strip captured by its edge regions in the recesses of the side walls of the or the respective groove and extending over at least the majority of the length of the groove.
The material from which the extrudate is formed may have, for instance, a Shore hardness of approximately 70.
The extrudate may be provided with one groove, having one decorative trim strip located therein; alternatively, the extrudate may be provided with two grooves and with two decorative trim strips located therein.
The extrudate may be formed from a styrene butadiene rubber; a polymer formed of ethylene, propylene and a diene monomer; neoprene; a mixture of any of the three foregoing polymeric materials; a copolymer of ethylene and propylene; a copolymer of styrene and butadiene; or a polyvinyl chloride.
The decorative trim strip may be a strip of one of the following materials; aluminium or stainless steel; aluminium or stainless steel protected on one side by a transparent polymeric layer; aluminium encapsulated in cellulose acetate butyrate; a polyvinyl chloride (P.V.C.) extrusion covered with a laminate of metallised polyester film and coated with a clear vinyl polymer film; a polyvinyl chloride extrusion covered with a laminate of metallised polyester filn and coated with a polyvinyl fluoride film; and a laminate of metallised polyester film coated with a polyvinyl fluoride film.
The flocked fibres may be polyester or polyamide flocked fibres.
For a better understanding of the present invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a cross-section through a support channel and adjacent edge regions of inner and outer panels of a vehicle door, provided with a flocked rubber glass run channel provided with a decorative trim strip in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 shows a cross-section through two opposing reinforcing strips and adjacent edge regions of inner and outer panels of a vehicle door, each provided with a respective flocked rubber waist seal with a decorative trim strip, one of the decorative trim strips being secured in accordance with the present invention;;
Figure 3 shows, on an enlarged scale, a cross-section through the decorated, flocked rubber glass run channel shown in Fig. 1, but in the "relaxed" state;
Figure 4 shows, on an enlarged scale, a cross-section through the right-hand decorated, flocked rubber waist seal shown in Fig.
2, but in the "relaxed" state.
Figure 5 shows a cross-section through a reinforcing strip and adjacent edge region of an outer door panel of a vehicle door, provided with a flocked, dual durometer rubber waist seal with a decorative trim strip secured in accordance with the present invention; and
Figure 6 shows, on an enlarged scale, a cross-section through the decorated, flocked rubber waist seal in Fig. 5, but in the "relaxed" state.
In Fig. 1, between an inner panel part 5 and an outer panel part 6 is located a metal "U"-shaped support channel 7 held in place between the panel parts 5 and 6 by spot welds. The end flanges 8 and 9 formed by the free edges of the support channel 7 and the panel parts 5 and 6 have sharp edges.
In Fig. 1, a flocked rubber glass run channel 1 6 which forms part of an extrudate has been inserted into the support channel 7. The channel 1 6 is provided with two shroud parts 1 7 and 1 8 which form other parts of the same extrudate and which together with the channel 1 6 define two recesses 1 9 and 20 into which the flanges 8 and 9 are inserted.
The channel 1 6 is also provided with two inwardly directed lips 21 and 22 which form further parts of the same extrudate and between which the sheet of glass will pass. The inner end surface 23 OD the channel 1 6 and the opposing surfaces 24 and 25 of the lips 21 and 22 are intended to come into contact with the glass and are coated by an electrostatic method with polyester fiock fibres.
The shroud part 1 is provided with an elongate groove 1 8A od which the side walls each have a recess in which is captured an edge region of a decorative trim strip 26 which comprises a laminate of metallised polymeric film.
In Fig. 2, both an inner panel part 10 and an outer panel part 11 are provided with respective reinforcing strips 12 and 1 3 which are held in place by means of spot welds. As with the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the end flanges 14 and 1 5 formed by the free edges of the reinforcing strips 1 2 and 1 3 and panel parts 10 and 11 have sharp edges.
In Fig. 2, two flocked rubber waist seals indicated generally by the reference numerals 27 and 28 are provided on the inner panel 10 and outer panel 11 respectively. The seal 27 is an extrudate and comprises a "U"shaped part 29 which defines a recess 30 into which is inserted the flange 14. The seal 27 is also provided with a lip 31 which comes into contact with the glass and the surface 32 of the lip 31 which comes into contact with the glass is coated with polyester flock fibres.
The seal 28 is an extrudate which is provided with a "U' '-shaped shroud 33 which defines a recess 34 into which the flange 1 5 is inserted. A decorative trim strip 35 is secured by its edge regions in recesses in side walls of a groove 33A in the outer face of the shroud 33, which strip 35 has the same form as the strip 26.
The seal 28 is also provided with a lip 36 which is inserted around the lower free end of the reinforcing strip 1 3 and with a lip 37 which faces the lip 31 of the other seal 17.
Between the lip 37 and the shroud 33 is a channel 38 into which water running down the window will fall and be carried away. That surface of the lip 37 facing the lip 31, and an adjacent surface of the body of the seal 28, is coated with flock fibres 39 as these surfaces will be in contact with the glass.
If desired, that face of the seal 27 facing the interior of the vehicle can be applied with' a decorative trim strip similar or identical to the strip 35 on seal 28, as shown at 40 in
Fig. 2.
Similarly, the extrudate (1 6, 1 7 and 18) can optionallly be provided on its shroud part 1 7 with a further decorative trim strip as shown at 41 in Figs. 1 and 3 similar or identical to the decorative trim strip 26 which may be attached by adhesive or by being captured in a groove.
Fig. 3 shows the extrudate (16, 1 7 and 18) in the "relaxed" position; the reference numerals used in Figs. 3 and 4 denote the corresponding components similarly denoted in Figs. 1 and 2.
Referring now to Figs. 5 and 6 there is shown in Fig. 5 part of an outer door panel, namely a panel part 11 and a reinforcing strip 13, which define an end flange 1 5 on which is provided a flange finisher generally indicated by the reference numeral 50, which constitutes part of the waist seal.
The flange finisher 50 has a generally Ushaped body 51 formed of material having a
Shore hardness of 95, the body 51 having a base 52 and two generally parallel arms 53 and 54. The arm 53 has on its inner surface a strip provided with two inwardly directed projections 55 and 56 and formed of a material of 70 Shore hardness. Similarly, the arm 54 has on its inner surface a strip provided with two inwardly directed ribs 57 and 58 formed of a material of 70 Shore hardness.
Around the outer surfaces of the body 51 is a layer 59 of material having a Shore hardness of 70. Projecting from the layer 59 in the region of the opposite ends of the arm 54 are two limbs 60 and 61 which are formed of the same material as layer 59 and which run into each other in a region remote from the arm 54. The limbs 60 and 61 are covered with flock 62.
Provided in the layer 59 in the region of the arm 53 is an elongate groove 63 having side walls which define recesses 64 and 65 respectively. Secured by its edge regions in the recesses 64 and 65 is a decorative trim strip 66 which includes an embedded metallic layer 67.
In the illustrated embodiments the edge regions of the decorative trim strip 26, 35 or 66 are held securely by the side wall portions of the groove 18A, 33A or 63. Not only does -shis obviate the need for any adhesive to secure the decorative trim strip to the extrudate (although such adhesive can be employed if desired), but also rain and other adverse elements can be prevented from contacting any region of the decorative trim strip apart from the front face thereof, thereby reducing the likelihood of rain forcing its way between any two layers of a multi-layer decorative trim strip.
A further advantage of obviating the need for an adhesive between the decorative trim strip and the extrudate is that there is no adhesive which, in use and after some considerable time, might weaken, thereby allowing the decorative trim strip to become separated from the extrudate. Moreover it is quicker and cheaper to apply the decorative strip to the extrudate in the form of an insert, rather than using adhesive. Also, the insert is easy to replace; furthermore poor adhesion, when using an adhesive, could result in the scrapping of a complete section/assembly.
When an aluminium layer constitutes or is part of the decorative trim strip, the aluminium layer may be anodised to resist corrosion.
