Based on an empirical study in selected Norwegian kindergartens, this article investigates the pr... more Based on an empirical study in selected Norwegian kindergartens, this article investigates the practice of musically active employees, with or without professional training. The overarching aim is to develop an understanding of early childhood music practitioners that may challenge dominant views of professional identity and provide some new images of what it means to work musically in a kindergarten. Departing from a sociological approach, five different 'musical pathfinders' are identified: the disc jockey, the facilitator, the choir leader, the caregiver and the performer. These 'ideal types' are discussed in the light of issues concerning cultural diversity, negotiations of professionalism, repertoire selection, the use of music technology, children's participation, and the relationship between formal and informal learning. The discussion raises critical questions concerning music activity in early childhood institutions, highlighting professionals' personal cultural experiences, preferences and practices as legitimate points of reference in the development of professional identity.

"This chapter presents research into young children’s experiences of and reactions to the concert... more "This chapter presents research into young children’s experiences of and reactions to the concert event in a multicultural setting: Indian musicians and dancers performing in Norwegian primary schools. It investigates physical and verbal responses to the concert event. The research project draws upon previous research in music education for young children and the psychology and sociology of music. The theoretical framework is based on current thinking in the psychology of music and music education. (H. Gembris 2005, S. Young 2004, C. Trevarthen 1997, L. Green 2008). The methodological approach is child-centred with a focus on children’s own perspectives and meaning-making strategies. Research data are gathered through observations and group interviews with young children. Main findings give an image of particularities of children’s concert experience, their associations and meaning-making strategies. Findings point to ways of experiencing, associating and reacting physically that are particular to being a child. Recognizing these particularities challenges prevailing practices of art promotion to children as well as underlying ideologies and understandings of childhood. The presentation argues that since children experience the arts differently, art promoters and educators should also reconsider the focus and format of artistic presentations in order to address these differences in a relevant way.

Those that fly without wings is a study concentrating on the practice of music and dance within a... more Those that fly without wings is a study concentrating on the practice of music and dance within a Chilean immigrant community in Oslo. It is a qualitative and interpretive account of how music activity plays a part in the negotiation and construction of immigrant identity, as well as how it gives a voice to tensions and contradictions within an immigrant group in an urban landscape.
The study concerns a community with a considerable musical activity of various Latin American genres, taking place in public as well as private arenas. By engaging with both historical and present discourses in the community, complex processes of adaptation, redefinition and reconstruction are addressed. Based on field research and interviews as well as song lyrics and poetry, the study examines various ways in which a group of people with an active and committed relationship to music make their practices meaningful in this particular social setting.
Music activity in everyday life is understood as an essential part of the maintenance of the immigrant community as a distinct social entity. The study argues that immigrant culture is intimately connected to social needs of the present and should not be regarded primarily as a way of maintaining links to “roots” and “tradition”. It also challenges prevailing notions of immigrant music as a tool for creating multicultural understanding and bridging ethnic barriers. This is done by demonstrating how music styles and practices can attain a strong symbolic significance which contributes to the construction of notions of difference and otherness.

Musikk etter 22. juli dreier seg om sterke opplevelser knyttet til musikkopplevelser som griper og naerer oss, samler eller forstyrrer oss på mange ulike måter. Det handler om musikk som overlevelse. I noen tilfeller i helt bokstavelig forstand. Det dreier seg om å handle gjennom musikk som en del av det individuelle og kollektive arbeidet med å bearbeide sorgen og komme seg videre i livet; om anerkjennelse, tro på fremtiden, og om eksistensielle dimensjoner i møtet mellom musikk og mennesket. Det handler om hvordan musikk formidler verdier og idealer i samfunnet, men også om musikkens plass innenfor de destruktive ideologiske forestillingene som lå til grunn for angrepene denne mørke fredagen i Norges historie.

Hovedoppgaven "Opplev Musikken" - Fredrikstad kommunale musikkskole møter Zimbabwe - er basert på... more Hovedoppgaven "Opplev Musikken" - Fredrikstad kommunale musikkskole møter Zimbabwe - er basert på et samarbeidsprosjekt mellom en norsk musikkskole og musikkpedagogiske miljøer i Zimbabwe, først og fremst knyttet til lærerutdanninger og organisasjonen ZAME (Zimbabwe Association of Music Educators). På bakgrunn av observsjoner og intervjuer drøfter oppgaven utfordringer i dette møtet i lys av musikksyn og pedagogikk. Oppgaven viser hvordan møtet med musikkpedagoger fra en annen kultur førte til vesentlige endringer i undervisning og undervisningsstruktur i en norsk musikkskole.
