Art Cloth Round Robin......Round 4

I have been part of an
Art Cloth Surface Design Round Robin
for the last few months.

I haven't been able to share much with you since we only reveal each round once a month...

I don't want to spoil the BIG REVEAL now do I

Well, we had our last Round 4 REVEAL today
so I can show you what I have been up to.

September 2010

Nancy's Art Cloth
Round 1
Sun Printing w/Setacolor Textile paints

October 2010

Virginia added bubble wrap stamping with yellow textile paint
Round 2

November 2010

Kathi added stamping with a homemade cardboard stamp
Round 3

December 2010

This is where I come in.....Round 4
You can see that I have stamped circles of all sizes all over the Nancy's cloth.
But.....I couldn't stop there!

I mixed up a batch of flour paste resist:

I guess you could call this.....Round 4B

Flour Paste......needs to dry overnight

The next morning it is almost dry enough to crack the flour...

After it is cracked...
I applied textile paints on top of the flour

I just love the look of the piece at this painted stage

Back side.....
I flipped it over to the back side to see how much of the paint seeped through the cracks.

Now.....we wait for the paint to dry & cure.

Then the fabric is soaked until the flour can be rinsed away.

Here is the completed piece dried and pressed:

Nancy's Round Robin Art Cloth
Completed

You are looking through the layers of 5 different surface design techniques.

Art Cloth......it's a fun thing!

When I have photographed all of the completed pieces, I will post a slideshow so you can follow the evolution of each individual piece.

Flour Paste Resist.....Reveal

Today was the big day...

I soaked this piece and removed all of the flour

This is Round 3

I am pleased with the results of the flour paste.
It does not obscure the potato printing done in Round 2.

This is now ready to be handed off for Round 4

The tricky part of this Surface Design Round Robin Art Cloth is to have self control. You can't over-due it.
You need to leave room for the next Round.

Sometimes it is so hard to stop...
You want to finish the piece!

Tomorrow I will get another piece in the Round Robin.
I will share images as I work on it.

Flour Paste Resist...Art Cloth Round Robin

I am part of an Art Cloth Round Robin Group

We try out different Surface Design Techniques on Fabric

Round 1
This piece was sun printed with Setacolor Textile Paints

Round 2
The next person stamped on it with a potato and bubble wrap

Then it was handed off to me...

Round 3
I am doing Flour Paste Resist

It helps the drying process if you put it on baking racks to allow air to get underneath.
This piece dried in 24 hours.

I am ready to paint it...

You really have to work at it to get the flour to crack.
I grip the fabric and slide it over the edge of the table to get it to crack this finely.

I use a cardboard tube to drape the fabric over while I am painting it.
It helps to keep the flour cracks open so the paint can get down into the fabric.

I used Lumiere Textile Paint

I thinned it down with a little bit of water to help the paint flow into the flour cracks.

This is the back side of the flour fabric...
Good idea to check and see how much paint is coming through.

Now it is time to air dry the paint and allow it to cure.
Normally you heat set Textile Paint after it dries, but that is not possible with the layer of dried flour on the surface.

I am impatient...
so I peeled off some of the flour to take a peek!

Now I sit and wait...
We will have the Round Robin exchange later this month.
I will post images of the BIG REVEAL.

Flour Paste Resist.....Part 3

Flour Paste Resist.....Results:

Fabric 1
Sun Dyed Fabric

The uncooked flour paste creates fine cracks

When applying the paint, be sure to check on the back of the fabric to make sure your paint is getting down into the cracks.

Salt was used when this fabric was painted and sun dyed.
The texture from the salt looks great with the cracked lines of paint on top.

Fabric 2
Rust Dyed Fabric

I painted with dark and light paints over the flour paste

All paint colors show up equally well

Yes, I am pleased with the results.
Yes, I plan to try this technique again.

We delivered Hay to a neighbor today...

After a taste test...

The horses gave the okay to unload it into the barn

Great Fabrics and Beautiful Weather....
It was a perfect day~
