To assess transmissibility of attenuated Babesia bigemina (BIS) and Babesia bovis (BOR) strains b... more To assess transmissibility of attenuated Babesia bigemina (BIS) and Babesia bovis (BOR) strains by Rhipicephalus microplus (R. microplus), 12 steers from a tick-free area were divided in four groups and infested at different intervals with R. microplus larvae. One animal from each group was inoculated with 1x108 infected erythrocytes (IE) of attenuated BIS, BOR, virulent B. bigemina, or B. bovis field strains.

In Plasmodium falciparum, another Apicomplexa protozoan, the interaction of rhoptry neck protein 2 (RON2) with apical membrane antigen-1 (AMA-1) has been described to have a key role in the invasion process. To date, RON2 has not been described in Babesia bigemina, the causal agent of bovine babesiosis in the Americas. In this work, we found a ron2 gene in the B. bigemina genome. RON2 encodes a protein that is 1351 amino acids long, has an identity of 64% (98% coverage) with RON2 of B. bovis and contains the CLAG domain, a conserved domain in Apicomplexa. B. bigemina ron2 is a single copy gene and it is transcribed and expressed in blood stages as determined by RT-PCR, Western blot, and confocal microscopy. Serum samples from B. bigemina-infected bovines were screened for the presence of RON2-specific antibodies, showing the recognition of conserved B-cell epitopes. Cryptosporidium parvum es una coccidia, que causa enfermedades diarreicas en varias especies de v... more Cryptosporidium parvum es una coccidia, que causa enfermedades diarreicas en varias especies de vertebrados incluyendo becerros, desde recién nacidos hasta 3 meses de edad. Se tomaron muestras a un total de 381 becerros de 54 ranchos con tipo de explotación de doble propósito y producción de carne en el municipio de Cuajinicuilapa, en la región Costa Chica del Estado de Guerrero. Se colectaron en bolsas de plástico muestras fecales por vía rectal; el diagnóstico parasitológico se realizó por la técnica de Faust y por la técnica de inmunofluorescencia directa utilizando el kit de los Laboratorios Meridian, Bioscience, Inc. (Cincinnati, Ohio, USA) específico para Cryptosporidium spp. y Giardia spp. La prevalencia más alta que se encontró fue de 3,14%, en becerros con una edad de 2 meses. One animal from each group was inoculated with 1x10 8 infected erythrocytes (IE) of attenuated BIS, BOR, virulent B. bigemina, or B. bovis field strains. Two additional serial passages were performed (syringe passages), and engorged female ticks were collected coincident with presence of IE in blood of infected steers. The offspring larvae were utilized to feed upon an additional group of recipient steers (tick passages). All needle passages were successful for inducing infection in steers that received both, the attenuated and field strains.
