National Highway-10 (NH-10) starts from Banglabandha (near Phulbari) of Indo-Bangladesh border an... more National Highway-10 (NH-10) starts from Banglabandha (near Phulbari) of Indo-Bangladesh border and passes through Siliguri City in West Bengal and enters the hilly terrain of Himalaya near Sevoke and runs almost parallelly to river Teesta for a considerable length connecting the capital of Sikkim, Gangtok after entering in the state of Sikkim from West Bengal in a place called Rangpo. At present. NH-10 is the one and only NH connectivity to the state of Sikkim and also to the Divisional town of Kalimpong of the newly formed Kalimpong district in West Bengal and strategically a very important road as it connects to the China border. From Sevoke to Rangpo, NH-10 is 52 Km long National Highway in the state of West Bengal which is unique in many aspects, though apparently similar to other hill roads. The fragile young mountain on one side, the meandering river Teesta with the high-velocity flow on the other side with very close proximity to the river in around 70% of the length in West Bengal portion, NH 10 is very challenging to maintain being prone to frequent landslide, rock fall, road bench subsidence and valley side scouring. Many anthropogenic activities in this complex geological region made its maintenance very tough & the scope of widening of the road limited. In this paper, the authors try to figure out the complexities of the road and the challenges faced to maintain and widen the road. The recent incident of the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood in Sikkim (October 2023) and its devastating effects on NH-10 have also been discussed.

Different binder and mix rutting specifications are adopted by agencies worldwide to address the issue of rutting in bituminous mixes. The wheel tracking test is also widely used to evaluate the rutting potential of bituminous layers which depends on the aggregate gradation, binder type and also on the method of mix design adopted. The present study was conducted to examine the relationship between laboratory wheel track rutting and field rutting of different mixes prepared with different aggregate gradations, binder types and binder contents selected using different compaction efforts. Fifteen pavement sections with different surface mixes were constructed on a national highway. Loose bituminous mixes collected from the field were compacted to prepare specimens for wheel tracking tests. Two sets of specimens were prepared to have (a) 7% air voids and (b) an air void content similar to that observed in the field 1 day after construction. The rut depths measured using a wheel tracking machine correlated very well with field rut depths measured after 1 year when the laboratory specimens were prepared at the same initial air void content as achieved in the field. As expected, the rut depth measured in the laboratory wheel tracker for specimens prepared with 7% air voids did not correlate well with 1 year rut depths of field mixes which had different initial air void contents. Limiting wheel tracking test rut depths have been identified on the basis of comparison of the field rutting performance of different mixes and the corresponding laboratory rutting performance of the mixes. Limiting criteria have been proposed for two limiting rut depths of 10 and 20 mm and for different traffic levels.

This paper discusses the lessons learnt from a premature pavement failure investigation of an Sto... more This paper discusses the lessons learnt from a premature pavement failure investigation of an Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) surface course laid to rehabilitate one of the most heavily laden National Highways in India. A detailed laboratory investigation was carried out to evaluate the causes of the failure. In addition to testing the samples from the field, the study also verified the applicability of an acid-base titration method to quantify the lime content in the field asphalt mixes. Considering the higher proportion of mineral filler in SMA mixes, a laboratory investigation was conducted as a part of this study to examine the influence of filler fractional voids on the properties of the SMA mixes. Along with the causes of the failure, the paper also emphasizes the pitfalls associated with the SMA construction. The paper also highlights the implications of these pitfalls and lessons learnt during the implementation of the project. One of the aims of the paper is to recommend best practices based on the lessons learnt, specifically etiquettes that are specific for SMA construction and that are not well established. Results of the additional laboratory studies as a part of the investigation showed that the filler fraction voids influenced the mix workability and the bitumen demand. Lime filler with high fractional voids resulted in mixes with lower workability and higher bitumen demand. The findings emphasize the importance of quality control tests for lime filler when used in SMA mixes.
