A three-year, National Institutes of Health-funded residential project at a southeastern research... more A three-year, National Institutes of Health-funded residential project at a southeastern research university immersed 83 secondary science teachers in a summer institute called "Bench to Bedside." Teachers were provided with knowledge, skills, experiences, and incentives to improve their science teaching and increase their awareness of scientific processes, technologies, and careers by examining the translational medicine continuum of basic to clinical research. This was done with the help of medical school researchers, clinical personnel, biotechnology entrepreneurs, program mentors, and prior year participants. A critical component of the institute was the preparation and implementation of an action research project that reflected teachers' newly acquired knowledge and skills. Embracing science and mathematics instruction initiatives, the project described in this paper wa... more Embracing science and mathematics instruction initiatives, the project described in this paper was developed around the needs of existing and aspiring teacher leaders. The project studied the sustained effects of a group of these teacher leaders in K-12 mathematics and science classrooms, specifically the impacts on student achievement and teacher collaboration of teacher participation in action research. Teachers used technology at each stage of their action research plan, and analyzed the data resulting from their cycles of action research. The products of the project were a real and virtual network of teacher leaders implementing action research and a dedicated website sharing the project and teacher action plans and experiences. Three approaches to hands-on science learning were investigated in two contexts, an elementary sc... more Three approaches to hands-on science learning were investigated in two contexts, an elementary science methods class and a secondary science methods class. An activity on foam, available on the Exploratorium's Institute for Inquiry web page, was the focus of the study. The students were exposed to a directed hands-on activity, a challenge situation, and an open-ended inquiry setting. Sequence of stations appeared to affect outcomes. Similarities and differences between groups were noted and analyzed. The authors concluded that when developing models for teaching science methods courses, methods instructors need to share power with prospective teachers by providing opportunities for them to both experience and evaluate methodologies, in groups and as individuals.

This paper introduces the Learning through Inquiry Science and Technology (LIST) program conceive... more This paper introduces the Learning through Inquiry Science and Technology (LIST) program conceived in 1997 as a professional development program to familiarize science teachers with inquiry-based science instruction, instructional technology integration, and alternative assessment techniques in order to change their traditional teacher-centered instructional strategies to a more learner-centered approach. Key design elements of the LIST model include administrative endorsement, disciplinewide adoption, on-site delivery, participant input, clear expectations, quality instruction, collaborative climate, continued support, and incentives.
