Etymology

From the Scots dialect of English meaning "legally pertinent," used in Scots legal circles starting in the early 1500s. Borrowed from Latin relevāns, relevāntem, present active participle of relevō (lift up again, lighten, relieve), from re- (again) + levō (lift).
