English: Coat of arms of Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. Granted 1973. The arms depicts Ilinniarfissuaq, the teacher training college in the city that has been a centre for Greenlandic culture for over a century. The mountain Sermitsiag which dominates the city's skyline is depicted behind the school. The oar represents fishing and hunting which has been the aboriginal source of subsistence in Greenland. The waves azure symbolise the sea while the waves argent symbolise the ice and snow of Greenland.
Dansk: Nuuks byvåben. Tildelt 1973. Våbnet viser Ilinniarfissuaq, lærerseminariet i Nuuk, der har været en vigtig grønlandsk kulturinstitution i mere end et århundrede. Bag seminariet ses Sermitsiag, bjerget der kan ses fra de fleste steder i byen. Åren symboliserer jagt og fiskeri, der er Grønlands traditionelle erhverv. De blå bøger symboliserer havet, mens de hvide symboliserer isen omkring Grønland. |
