Wikipedia:Requests for history merge
This page is used for listing requests for history merges or history splitting of pages. For relatively simple cases where history merge is required, the destination page should be tagged with the {{history merge}} template. This page should be used for requesting very complex merges, merges involving more than two pages, history merges of deleted pages, or when the use of the template is otherwise inadequate or where its usage would cause problems.
This page was originally for listing cut-and-paste moves which could not be repaired due to a then-extant technical limitation. The limitation has since been removed, but this page is still available if you find a cut-and-paste move, and are not able to repair it yourself (there is a procedure for doing it, but only administrators can do it, and it is a bit tricky!).
Administrators need to read Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Fixing cut-and-paste moves and Wikipedia:Requested moves/Closing instructions.
The procedure
[edit]- If the issue is clear-cut (straight-forward cut-and-paste move(s) to a different title), place a
{{history merge|NAME OF PAGE THE ARTICLE WAS CUT FROM}}
template at the new location of the article which has been moved through cut and pasting, i.e. on the article where the pasting was done. This will place the request in Category:Candidates for history merging to be reviewed. - In more complex cases (explained at Wikipedia:How to fix cut-and-paste moves), please leave a description of the problem under the "Repair requests" section. An administrator will look over the pages and perform whatever tasks are necessary and update the request.
- Tasks that have been completed or do not need further discussion will be removed.

- History of the American Legion should be merged back into American Legion for reasons described over at Wikipedia:Neutral_point_of_view/Noticeboard#American_Legion. Thank you, Polygnotus (talk) 05:25, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
- This is not a candidate for history merging due to WP:Parallel histories. History merging moves clearly-defined non-overlapping blocks of revisions from one page to another. There are none of those here. * Pppery * it has begun... 05:49, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Pppery: Then what can we do to fix this problem? I assume copy-pasting is a bad idea, right? I can't really use {{copied}} when the "History of..." article gets deleted, which it should. At some point content was removed from one article and added to the POVFORK. Should the "History of... article" stay with a redirect? Polygnotus (talk) 05:50, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
- See WP:CWW for how to properly attribute copy-pastes that don't have a pattern allowing a history merge. * Pppery * it has begun... 05:59, 24 July 2024 (UTC)\
- Just to answer a secondary question, if there is history at both locations then it should stay a redirect, and tagged with {{r with history}} along with both talk pages being tagged with {{copied}}. Primefac (talk) 12:17, 24 July 2024 (UTC)

- Merge Actaea (Greek myth) into Actaea (mythology). Actaea (mythology) was the original set index article before it was merged into the disambiguation page Actaea. The content from Actaea was then later cut-and-paste to Actaea (Greek myth) by a user who has done similar things to a lot of these articles. Actaea (mythology) is the better title and should retain the page history. MClay1 (talk) 10:10, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
- To quote Waldyrious,
old revisions can be seen fine, but diffs are a mess, I'm afraid
. I'm going to mark this asNot done as more of a {{split article}} than a true copy/paste, since half the content in Special:Permalink/761993569 is still present in Special:Permalink/775070025 (the subsequent revision). I'll tag the talk pages to make it more obvious about the history/attribution of the three pages. Primefac (talk) 12:13, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
- Even if it's too difficult to incorporate Actaea, would it not still be preferable to merge the history of Actaea (Greek myth) into Actaea (mythology)? To be clear, I'm also requesting that Actaea (Greek myth) be moved to Actaea (mythology) and so the latter page should retain its history since it is the origin of the content on the former page. If I put the request through a normal RM, the page history of the target may be deleted. MClay1 (talk) 13:33, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
- There was no copy/paste pagemove between those two pages, so... no. The page is tagged in two different places indicating that it needs to stay live for history and attribution purposes, so you can file your RM. Primefac (talk) 13:36, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
- What will happen to the page history of Actaea (mythology) when the page gets deleted to make way for the move? Do we not need to keep that for attribution purposes? MClay1 (talk) 13:38, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
- It shouldn't be deleted, see WP:ROUNDROBIN. Primefac (talk) 13:39, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
