[edit]Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from Middle Low German slicht (“plain, simple, common, without value, inferior, inappropriate”), or from Middle Dutch slicht (“simple, common”); compare German schlecht (“bad, evil”). First found in 17th- and 18th-century dictionaries, still marked as a Germanism; at that time, the word mentioned as a translation for German schlecht was nelietis (now a noun meaning “villain,” “scoundrel”).[1]
