Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Middle Low German slicht (plain, simple, common, without value, inferior, inappropriate), or from Middle Dutch slicht (simple, common); compare German schlecht (bad, evil). First found in 17th- and 18th-century dictionaries, still marked as a Germanism; at that time, the word mentioned as a translation for German schlecht was nelietis (now a noun meaning “villain,” “scoundrel”).[1]
