Mobile apps repository for older people

Published: 01 October 2014 Publication History

Abstract

Information and Communication Technology have had a special impact in our society and even in our daily life. Technologies such as mobile devices, or Internet provide us with services everywhere and every time, they help us to contact with other people, to access information, etc. However not all the people use these technologies in the same way. Older people are not born in the technological age and use technology partially. For them technology can be something exclusive. In order to avoid this it is necessary to develop initiatives that bring the older people closer to the technologies. This can be achieved taken into account their special features, needs and interests. The present project is one of those initiatives. It aims to provide older people with a repository of mobile apps classified attending to their personal special features and to their needs. Moreover the repository takes into account older people opinion to classify the tools. In order to implement it Drupal was used and several apps have been classified and added into it. From this experience and the interaction with older people it was possible to see that they can and want to use new technologies to make easier their daily life, but technology should be adapted to them.
