Personalized avatar capture using two Kinects in a moment

Published: 28 November 2012 Publication History

Abstract

In computer graphics field, a personalized avatar is the graphical representation of the user or the user's alter ego or character. Unfortunately, traditional approaches do not offer out-of-laboratory techniques for general users, making it almost impossible for a consumer to create his/her virtual clone in the computer world. 3D scanning [Cyberware 2012] could capture the personalized avatar in 17 seconds, but its price is very expensive (about $240,000). Microsoft Kinect is an alternate low-price device for everyday user, which has been used to capture 3D body [Tong et al. 2012]. The system [Tong et al. 2012], which includes three Kinects, two pillars, and one turntable, is still complex for a general user. Moreover, the requirement of a stationary standing on the turntable about 30 seconds is some unreasonable and insufferable for a user.
