Smart Play Games Report for 2015

Image
Happy new year, everyone! It's been a long time since I've done a proper sales report, which probably foreshadows the transitions from 2015. I kicked off the year knowing that I couldn't repeat the same pace I held in 2014, releasing one new game or product each month via DriveThruCards' POD service. That wasn't sustainable for the long-term, but it really yielded great rewards and I'm glad I did it. Without further ado, let's look at the numbers and break down some context. The Numbers Here are the sales numbers for each product in 2015 (in red) compared to 2014 (in blue). The good news is that every product that existed in 2014 sold more units than it did in 2015! Across the board growth is very positive. These are the gross sales numbers for each product in 2015 compared to 2014. As you can see with some small low-priced products like the Koi Pond promo cards, the sales numbers far exceed their actual dollar gross. These numbers fluctuat...

New Patreon Tier: Twitch Streaming Graphic Design and Layout

Image
For the past few weeks, I've been practicing streaming my work on Twitch. You can see some of the archived broadcasts on my profile page here: http://www.twitch.tv/danielsolis81 I'm still learning the ropes and trying to figure out the technical issues. For now, I'm saving some archived highlights publicly on youtube, as you can see above and on my youtube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVMiK5E4VEq7FPCNBsw1hJQ My main issue at the moment is that my archived streams are cutting off upwards of 20 minutes early for some reason. If anyone knows how to fix that, I'd be very grateful. For now I'm recording a local copy of stream. I will save those archived videos to youtube as Unlisted videos. That means only people who have the URL will be able to watch the video. So that brings me to my well-buried lead: I have a new $10 tier on my Patreon page! I'll post archived twitch streams for $10+ patrons, along with as many files from that strea...

Card At Work: A New Series on Card Design

Image
Hi folks! A while back I announced that I would expand my Patreon to broader game production assets, including releasing my paywalled videos to the public. Well here we go! The first episodes of Card at Work are now on youtube. First start with Episode 0, which explains the overall premise and goal of the series. And Episode 1 which combines the first couple of video lessons that had been behind a paywall previously. Thanks so much for your support! Please subscribe to my Patreon to get episodes more frequently!

An Update for Patreon Subscribers

Image
Hi patrons! Sorry about the long wait between updates. It's been a busy few months, but honestly I've hit a sort of writer's block when it comes to making new icons for different game actions. We're sitting on about 400 icons now, I kinda felt like there wasn't enough material left for me to make a valuable bundle for you. For icons of abstract concepts and simple nouns, you've got a lot of options already between game-icons.net and thenounproject.com . So I am broadening the scope of this Patreon to cover a wide range of tabletop game production assets. Videos : It's been a few years since I released my first instructional videos on card game design on an online course site. Since that time, they've shifted to a subscription-only model that has really reduced new enrollments. It's probably time to release the videos from behind their paywall. Card templates : Frames and backgrounds for cards in CCGs and euro games. Plus any more based o...

177 Free Card Game Icons

Image
Time for another Patreon update! Designing Trickster has been a nice opportunity to re-visit some of the older icons I designed when my Patreon campaign first began. I've learned a lot more about how these icons are being used in real projects and how they can be improved. So I redesigned some new icons for basic spaces in card games like the Deck, Discard Pile, Hand, Tableau, Trick, and Exile. From there, I made icons for every combination of "Move from A to B" and "Swap between A and B." For example, if you needed to show that a card effect makes you discard twice, then you could do something like the following example: Or if you wanted to say "Remove two cards from any player's hand from the game," you could do the following example: Pretty simple and elegant syntax you can use here, I think. Grab the zip file and a link to the whole icon archive at my Patreon .

New Game Icons and CCG Templates, thanks to Patreon Backers

Image
This weekend Patreon backers got a double - whammy of goodies. First up, a new set of icons inspired by Love Letter and the Dominion core set. This includes some more specialist actions like "trash a card" or "buy a card" which is distinct from "gain a card." Tricky stuff. I included the Dominion example above for some context of where I drew inspiration for each icon. That was also an opportunity to suggest how you might use language-neutral typography to represent things like "You may trash up to four icons" or "If opponent plays an attack card, you may cancel it." The second update went out exclusively to $20 backers. It's a vector CCG frame in InDesign readymade for DataMerge. Because it's vector, it should be pretty easy for you to customize to your liking without losing any resolution. Get both goodies on my Patreon here: Tabletop Game Icons inspired by Dominion and Love Letter Vector CCG Card Frame Hope y...

Language-Neutralizing Tabletop Games on Patreon

Image
My next batch of icons on Patreon will be something a little different. I'm trying to make language-neutral icons for existing games, the first set being Love Letter and Dominion. Fortunately, some of the basic concepts in these games have already been covered in past icons. Basic actions like "discard from hand" are well handled. I won't just copy-paste those files with new names. For the rest of the icons, things are a bit tricky. In some cases, cards' effects are simple enough that I can make one icon for them, just as I have for the past several batches. That is, each file is a generic standalone icon. If your game has some complex effects, you can put those simple icons together, like letters from an alphabet. In other cases, like Dominion, the effects have multiple steps and so are somewhat outside the scope of the existing icons. I can make files for each card, which would necessarily mean some repeating iconography (+1 action, for example). Or I...

More Game Icons on Patreon!

Image
I'm still making new game icons on Patreon ! I uploaded a new batch a couple weeks ago based on patrons' suggestions. If you have any recommendations, feel free to join the project ! Oh! I also added a premium tier that gives you access to my grab bag of Photoshop Actions, textures, layered files, and more stuff I use on a daily basis. There's some really good stuff here! To clarify the intent of this project, I'm really focusing on icons for in-game actions, reflecting actual real-world verbs. If your game has swords, space cannons, hit points, and that sort of thing, I'd recommend hitting up the Noun Project or Game-Icons . They both have plenty of thematic icons that cover those bases. But if you need icons stuff that happens at the table – flipping a coin, stepping a die up or down, or drawing a card from an opponent's hand – then this project is for you! 100% vector icons for real world game actions.

Tabletop Game Icons on Patreon!

Image
Ever wish you had an icon for an oft-repeated line of game text like "Rotate a card" or "Place a card face-down onto another card in a tableau." Me too! That's why I'm running a Patreon for tabletop game icons ! Now I want to make game icons available for you – the people! This project is simple: I design icons for you – the people – and I get to keep eating ramen. Deal? Awesome. Specs Here are the deets for the icons: All black and white, so you can add textures, colors, themes, whatever you like. Or just keep them plain as-is. All vector EPS, so you can scale them to any size and they'll retain their gorgeous, mysterious allure. All released on a Creative Commons Attribution license. Be free, icons! Free? Why pledge? "But hey," you might ask, "if these icons are going to be available on Creative Commons Attribution license, why should I pledge now instead of six months from now when the archive is six times as big?...
