I took your Timezone code from Atlas and put it into my location code so it can turn coordinates into a timezone.
#
aaronpk
ah very nice
#
aaronpk
did you see how it works? it's a total hack. but it's been working pretty well :)

#
GWG
aaronpk: I did see how it works. But if you couldn't think of a better way, I doubt I could.
#

well there are plenty of "better" ways, but not many that can be coded into a single file with no external dependencies :)

aaronpk: Would you mind if I used Atlas as a provider of data for Simple Location? Or would that be abusing it?
#
aaronpk
what's Simple Location?
#
GWG
My WordPress Location plugin
#
GWG
It's not so simple
#
aaronpk
do you mean using my instance at atlas.p3k.io?
#
GWG
Yes. As an optional provider
#
aaronpk
hm, that wasn't really the intent of it
#
aaronpk
could you use the code from Atlas in the plugin directly?
#
GWG
What was the intent?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "intent" yet. Would you like to create it?
#
GWG
I am in some cases.
#
aaronpk
i don't mind random individuals using atlas.p3k.io, but using it as the default for a plugin that is distributed is probably not a good idea
#
GWG
I used the timezone determining class.
#
GWG
aaronpk: I wasn't going to make it the default.
#
GWG
I abstracted the map return class so I could pass in multiple providers.
#
GWG
The Map Return class does all location functions
#
aaronpk
is it just one atlas service you want to include? which one?
#
GWG
Return named location and static map, most likely. That is what I have Nominatim and Google already set up for.
#
GWG
But for now, I'm not worrying about that
#
aaronpk
ah, well those are luckily low resource usage for me, because i proxy to other backend services. it's possible i may change the backend service to use nominatim itself for example, so i'm not sure you'd actually gain anything by using atlas as another data source
LCubed joined the channel
#
aaronpk
atlas is really just my own abstraction over other backend providers so that I have a consistent API to work with across all my projects
#
Salt
aaronpk, actually, I want to PESOS something for the first time because I've neglected content for some time
#
GWG
I tend to use other abstractions till I have time to do my own.

I posse my git repos
#
cweiske
original is at git.cweiske.de
#
cweiske
I mirror them to github.com/cweiske/ as follows:
#
cweiske
on my server, I go to the bare git dir
#
cweiske
then I add the github repo as new remot
#
cweiske
git remote add github ....
#
cweiske
git config remote.github.mirror true
#
cweiske
(so that always everything is copied)
#
cweiske
then I create a post-receive hook file
#
cweiske
cat hooks/post-receive
#
cweiske
#!/bin/sh
#
cweiske
git push --quiet github
#
cweiske
and make it executable
#
cweiske
on the server that hosts the git repos, I've got a ssh key in ~/.ssh/
#
cweiske
(generated with ssh-keygen as usual)
#
cweiske
this one is used when the post-receive hook is executed
#
cweiske
and on github.com, I've got a second user (cweiske-mirror) that has this key associated
#
cweiske
this user has access to my repositories
#
cweiske
so it may push to them
#
cweiske
that's basically all
loicm_ joined the channel
#
petermolnar
the main reason why I'm asking is that yesterday I read the $66M loss of github and started to think I don't have properly synced copies at the other silos
#
petermolnar
not that my projects are so important
#
petermolnar
the setup you've described is more or less what I've started to work on
#
petermolnar
I've also learned you can add multiple urls to the same remote, so that's a single push to X locations
#
cweiske
issues that I have with my setup:
#
cweiske
1. setup is tedious. creating a repository with sync setup takes ~10 minutes
#
cweiske
2. you can't use the merge button on github, since the next sync from your own repository overwrites everything at github
#
cweiske
3. git push takes longer because it waits for the hook to be executed
#
cweiske
4. issues/bug reports are still on github
#
petermolnar
1, script it; 2. real problem, but you can get the patch easily; 3. not a real problem imho :) 4. that is why I'm looking at fossil
#
cweiske
I thought about using a full-featured git web interface
#
cweiske
but gitlab is just toooooo heavy with all the services it needs
#
cweiske
gogit is ... dead from the number of recent commits and open issues
#
petermolnar
and again, that is why I'm considering fossil :)
#
cweiske
I would want openid or indieauth for login
#
cweiske
for which there is a patch for gogit, but no activity
#
j4y_funabashi
what is tumblr
#
Loqi
Tumblr is a popular content hosting silo, especially for found images & video, that explicitly supports multiple types of posts, and through free domain mapping, a content hosting service as well https://indieweb.org/Tumblr
#
cweiske
I'd like to continue using git and not switch to a different scm again
#
cweiske
I went from CVS to SVN to Git, and I've seen enough
#
cweiske
and use fossil only as web interface?
#
petermolnar
and for wiki and bug tracking
#
petermolnar
I'm not sure I have the patience to set this up though
#
cweiske
there would also be the issue of telling people that they can use git to clone, that they do not require fossil
#
petermolnar
the workflow would be git; fossil would just be an "addon" on top of that, so POSSE to github and gitlab would stay
#
petermolnar
the problem is that I'm finally getting used to git, after years of use
#
petermolnar
so moving to another system sounds a little painful
#
petermolnar
even if it's a secondary sestem

#

"Gogs - Go Git Service"
#
aaronpk
yeah i'm super not clear on whether that's the same thing ?
#
aaronpk
so from what I heard, there was basically one primary developer of Gogs, and he got hired by Gitlab. but Gitlab is continuing to pay him to develop Gogs since they actually do believe that multiple options are good.
#
martymcguire[m]
looks to be the same thing.
#
martymcguire[m]
there's a fork of gogs called gitea that looks interesting: https://github.com/go-gitea/gitea
#
aaronpk
oh boy
#
martymcguire[m]
according to the gitea maintainers they didn't like that gogs only has one maintainer
#
martymcguire[m]
i've been running gitlab and it is kind of miserable to maintain, so i am watching that closely.
#
martymcguire[m]
i need git lfs support for the way i manage my site, which looks to be coming soon for gitea, but... who knows?
#
aaronpk
huh I heard gitlab got way easier to maintain ever since they made system packages for it. `apt-get install gitlab`
#
martymcguire[m]
it is definitely much better with the system packages (i now actually upgrade it!)
#
aaronpk
yuuup haha. my last install of gitlab was almost impossible to upgrade so i just installed another one on top of it. finally replaced both of those with gogs back in feburary
#
Loqi
awesome
#
martymcguire[m]
however those packages still maintain vendored versions of things like postgresql binaries
#
martymcguire[m]
at some point i upgraded my system postgresql, so now all my gitlab upgrades fail at the backup step until i replace gitlab's pg_dump binary with the system one
#
martymcguire[m]
so, it works better than before the system packages, but still a squeaky wheel. :}
#
petermolnar
to need pgsql for maintaining git repositories sound utterly terrifying to me
#
aaronpk
eh it's mostly for all the issues and stuff
#
aaronpk
if you just want pure git you don't need any of these things
#
aaronpk
even git with a simple web interface can be done without an extra database
#
petermolnar
I'm guessing this is the reason why fossil exists

that is a great use case for Git LFS
#
petermolnar
what is git lfs?
#
Loqi
It looks like we don't have a page for "git lfs" yet. Would you like to create it?
#
petermolnar
is this something like git annex?
#
martymcguire[m]
git lfs is Git Large File Storage (LFS). It replaces large files such as audio samples, videos, datasets, and graphics with text pointers inside Git, while storing the file contents on a remote server.
#
martymcguire[m]
git lfs << https://git-lfs.github.com/
#
Loqi
ok, I added "https://git-lfs.github.com/" to the "See Also" section of /git lfs
#
martymcguire[m]
it is similar to git annex, but uses a secondary server for managing the LFS files
#
martymcguire[m]
there is support for it on github, of course, but also gitlab.
#
martymcguire[m]
gitea (fork of gogs) has most of the support in place but is waiting to add the feature until after their "upcoming" 1.0 release
