The potential of fiber-based sensors to monitor the fluence of atmospheric neutrons is evaluated through accelerated tests at the TRIUMF Neutron Facility (TNF) (BC, Canada), offering a flux approximatively 10$^9$ higher than the reference spectrum observed under standard conditions in New York City, USA. The radiation-induced attenuation (RIA) at 1625 nm of a phosphorus-doped radiation sensitive optical fiber is shown to linearly increase with neutron fluence, allowing an in situ and easy monitoring of the neutron flux and fluence at this facility. Point or distributed optical fiber (OF)-based dosimeters can exploit the observed linear dependence of the radiation-induced attenuation (RIA) at 1550 nm in phosphosilicate OFs to monitor the total ionizing dose (TID). The temperature dependence of the radiation sensitivity coefficients at 1550 nm (expressed in dB km$^{-1}$ Gy$^{-1}$) of three phosphorus-doped single-mode OFs has been investigated between -80 °C and 300 °C for TID ranging from 1 Gy to 1 kGy(SiO$_2$). LUMINA, a fiber-based dosimeter, exploiting the radiation induced attenuation (RIA) phenomenon, has been operational inside the International Space Station (ISS) since August 2021. We discuss in this article its capability to detect the possible signatures of recent solar particle events (SPEs) through the related increase of the dose rate (DR) radiation level within the ISS. We investigated the combined effects of temperature and X-rays exposures on the nature of point defects generated in Ge-doped multimode optical fibers. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results on samples X-ray irradiated at 5 kGy(SiO2), employing different temperatures and dose rates, are reported and discussed. [...]

We evaluate the temperature effect on the X-ray radiation-induced luminescence (RIL) of differently doped silica fibers obtained via the sol-gel route. Previous investigations showed that these optical materials exhibit interesting dosimetry properties, such as very good detection capabilities and linear response over a large range of dose rate. The transient radiation-induced attenuation (RIA) of two different versionsof pure-silica-core (PSC) multimode optical fibers (so-called“solarization-resistant”fibers) exposed to nanosecond 1 MeV X-ray pulses are investigated.On-line RIA spectra measurements at both room temperature (RT) and liquidnitrogen temperatures (LNT) in the range 1–3.5 eV are performed. Followingthe RIA kinetics, the properties of the metastable defects that are bleachedjust after the pulse are discussed. [...]

This article presents a new prospect for radiation detection exploiting the high radiation sensitivity of an ultralow-loss pure-silica core optical fiber (ULL-PSCF). This fiber exhibits very high transient X-ray radiation-induced attenuation (RIA) levels from UV to IR during irradiation, while its RIA quickly returns to a low permanent level after irradiation.
