This 1981 Audi 4000 was purchased by the seller after it was featured on BaT in December 2015. It is a modified “5+5” example equipped with a 2.2L inline-five and a 5-speed manual transmission. Service records dating back to 2004 are available, with work including the fitment of a new clutch, water pump, thermostat, belts, and exhaust system noted. Numerous refurbishments have been done to aging parts over the years, and the car is said to present well with recently refinished trim. The car is offered with an Oregon Special Interest title in the seller’s name.
The Alpine White paint presents well with no major flaws noted by the seller. The passenger front fender was replaced at some point in the past but the finish is said to have aged similarly to the rest of the car according to the seller.
Aluminum window trim has been fitted front and rear and was electro-plated black along with the rest of the exterior metal trim. New seals have been fitted and the seller notes that some surface corrosion is present at various points around the body. The wheels were recently refinished by the seller and are mounted with nearly new tires.
The interior is finished in tan cloth with black trim and new carpet has been installed. The seats show discoloration, particularly on the driver-side bottom and bolster. The odometer was repaired by the seller and currently shows 138,100 miles, but the true mileage is unknown. The factory radio has been replaced with a Kenwood unit and VDO gauges are mounted to the center console below the head unit.
Audi “5+5” models were differentiated by a 5-speed manual paired to an inline-five engine instead of the inline-four that was more common to the B2 platform. This 2.2L inline-five has been modified with a 272 cam, a 9.1:1 compression big valve head, and a 2 1/4″ exhaust with a Magnaflow muffler and a cat delete. Available service records date back to 2004 and indicate that a new water pump, thermostat, timing and accessory drive belts were fitted prior to the seller’s ownership. Power runs through a 5-speed manual gearbox with a new clutch and throwout bearing.
The brakes were refreshed prior to the seller’s ownership and feature slotted discs in the front and drums in the rear. The car carries aftermarket springs and shocks. Some spots of surface corrosion are noted by the seller.
