Candidate Connection

Michele Knoll participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on June 19, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Michele Knoll's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Improve funding for education as well as improving education in general.

Provide training and retraining for current jobs and future jobs in PA. Protect the environment in PA.[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Making sure that funding for education in PA is equitable and not a burden on property owners. Making sure that education is relevant and provides the opportunity to acquire a meaningful, good paying job after graduation, college, or apprenticeship. This will attract people and jobs to PA.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Michele Knoll answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?

I looked up to my mother. She grew up in poverty and was able after having a family to return to her education and earn her B.S/.. M.Ed., and Ph.D. and become a professor. She believed education was the key to success.[3]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else that best describes your political philosophy?
Probably "Team of Rivals" by Doris Kearns Goodwin.[3]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Honesty, integrity, and accessibility.[3]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
I am a person who has the privilege of working with young children delays and disabilities in the family's home. I don't have to guess at the struggles working families have. I can see myself when a family has food insecurity, a threat of homelessness, or struggles with an addiction.[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To show up to meetings, read bills and strive to understand the nuances, vote, listen to constituents, read the newspaper, speak with experts, research and conduct oneself with dignity.[3]
What legacy would you like to leave?
I would like to be able to say that I worked to improve the quality of education in the state of Pennsylvania.[3]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at that time?
I remember when John F. Kennedy was assassinated. The principal came into class and told the teacher. We all prayed for him. I was 7 years old.[3]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
I took inventory in the Physic's Dept. at the University of Pittsburgh. I think it was a two week temporary job. Then I was a lifeguard at hotel in downtown Pittsburgh the next year and worked during the summer.[3]
What happened on your most awkward date?
I think it was someone my sister fixed me up with from New York when I was already serious about my future husband. It ended with me getting on a bus to go home.[3]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
I love Christmas because of all the decorations and the live tree we decorate. It's a time when the whole family is together and happy. The traditions of baking cookies, cutting the tree down and decorating the tree with ornaments we've collected all fill me with hope and anticipation.[3]
What is your favorite book? Why?
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. I read it when I was quite young, and it made me realize how very fortunate I am. My parents lived through the Depression, and this book gave me a window into how desperately poor people were, my parents were.[3]
If you could be any fictional character, who would you be?
Liesel, the main character in The Book Thief.[3]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
The branch that hangs over the window in one room. I picked it up in the woods on a walk with my sister, Cheri, who has passed away and my husband. We went for a walk with the dogs and found the branch and carried it home with us.[3]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Hotel California.[3]
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Not needing to feel that I need fix all the world's problems.[3]
