Medicaid Expansion
In 2017, Maine was the first state to approve a ballot measure to expand Medicaid. In 2018, there were four ballot measures proposing to expand Medicaid or renew expansion. Three were approved, and one was defeated.
In 2020, Oklahoma voters approved a Medicaid expansion initiative. Missouri voters approved a Medicaid expansion initiative on August 4.

As of January 2022, a total of 38 states and Washington, D.C., had expanded or voted to expand Medicaid, while 12 states had not. The map below provides information on Medicaid expansions by state; for states that expanded, hover over the state to view the political affiliation of the governor at the time of expansion.[1]
Drug price standards
In 2016, California voters rejected California Proposition 61, Drug Price Standards with 53.2% of voters opposing the initiative. Proposition 61 would have regulated drug prices by requiring state agencies to pay no more than the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) pays for prescription drugs. Proposition 61 was the most expensive ballot measure battle in 2016, with the combined amount of money raised by the support and opposition campaigns totaling over $128.28 million. In 2017, Ohio voters rejected a similar drug price standards initiative, Ohio Issue 2, with 79.15% of voters opposing it. The combined total raised for and against Issue 2 was $77.41 million.
