Bivens ran for re-election to the Fort Worth City Council to represent District 5 in Texas. She won in the general election on May 6, 2023.

Bivens earned a B.A. in radio/television/film from North Texas State University. Her professional experience includes work as the head of the City of San Antonio's Public Information Office, a bureau chief for Fox 4, a corporate spokesperson for Oncor Electric Delivery, and a television reporter. She has also served as the president and executive director of North Texas Leaders and Executives Advocating Diversity, the chair of the board of directors of the Fort Worth Transportation Authority, and a member of the boards of the Women's Policy Forum, the Regional Transportation Council, and the Fort Worth Commercial Board of Adjustment.[1][2]

The city of Fort Worth, Texas, held an election for mayor and city council on May 6, 2017. The filing deadline for candidates who wished to run in this election was February 17, 2017.

The mayor's seat and all eight city council seats were up for election. District 2 Councilman Sal Espino opted not to run for re-election in 2017. Incumbent Gyna Bivens defeated Bob Willoughby in the general election for the District 5 seat on the Fort Worth City Council.[3]

Bivens' campaign website listed the following priority:

A priority goal of Re-elect Gyna M. Bivens is the revitalization of the CAVILE community. Built in 1954 for public housing, the site is slated for demotion, however Gyna is dedicated about this passion project and collaborating with the Fort Worth Housing Authority is working to develop this property creating single-family homes, townhouses and apartment complexes. Through renovations in the existing property coupled with new property development, a gracious living facility will be created.[6]
