Chapter Text

Amethio stared at the ceiling of his quarters, restless and yet he felt like he was on the verge of sleep. It had been days since his encounter with Rayquaza, Ceruledge having been tended to by Conia while Amethio stewed over the defeat. Night had come quickly, and they were on their way back to headquarters, making Amethio nearly sick to his stomach.

There was no doubt that Gibeon would instil the other admins to assist in getting Rayquaza, Amethio knew that they’d be far more successful in their endeavours than he ever could be. The thought alone made Amethio sit up and rest his head in on his knees, trying to keep his composure.

“Go do sleep, my baby sleep,”

He remembered the song too well, springing in his mind at times of distress. Amethio shook his head, he couldn’t focus on that right now. Running a hand through his hair, Amethio couldn’t stop the vague memories.

“Where has she gone off to? I can hear her crying out.”

It was cold from what Amethio could remember, snow falling as the sun lowered into the sky. Buizel was curled up at her feet while Amethio laid in her lap.

“Those little birds so sweet, oh, how innocent,” her fingers had carefully and gently detangle the knots in Amethio’s hair. “Off they fly to somewhere, so far away.”

He recalled shouting to her, never quite remembering how her hands felt like or what she looked like. Her voice was soft, near calculating, never going too high. She never yelled like his father, speaking evenly and never responding with unfiltered emotion. Maybe he took after her more than he thought, maybe Amethio had picked out her worst traits to keep for himself.

Amethio buried his head into the space between his knees and his body, letting out a shuddering breath. “Go to sleep, my baby, sleep. I'll see you tomorrow, when you open your eyes.”

He repeated the last stanza of the song, repeating it over and over, carelly rocking rocking back and forth. A pathetic moment of weakness that no one was allowed, Amethio hadn't thought of the song in years. Yet, here he was, repeating the words under unstable breathing and off-key tones.

Sometimes, Amethio could recall vague dreams of staying with her.
