Chapter 1: Mama's Don't let your Babies Grow up to be Cowboys
Chapter Text
The world was expanding, those on the East coast of these United States were watching their nation gain lands to the west. The Wild West, to many, was a place of lawlessness and hard work. It was not a place for the faint of heart, but it did give hope to the weary traveler. Perhaps their destination could be found among the mountains and plains that are yet to be explored.
From a young age the Novak house knew that their youngest was… different. All of their children were growing to be strong and confident Alphas, but Castiel. There was something much more wild about him. The boy did not take too kindly to the harsh realities of life, nor did he enjoy some of the opinions of those around him. Once, his mother called him a sensitive soul, which was true just not in the way she expected. By the time he came of age, Castiel Novak was on his way west. Where better to work on his inner demons and strengthen his ties to hard work?
On the opposite side of this was the Winchester house. John Winchester, like his father Henry before him, wanted nothing but the best for his children. Unlike his father, however, John was in a much better position to get the best deal for his children, as they were all omegas. Three rare male omegas were born into Winchester house. Dean the eldest, Samuel the middle child, and Adam the youngest, were all brought up to be shining examples of the elite in New York. Never would he have thought any of his children would set their eyes westward to the desolate and barbaric lands. He taught them better than that, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and that is where this story starts.
Castiel,
It has come to my attention that you have yet to take yourself another Omega. Claire is a growing young girl who will need a strict hand and a soft Omega to become the Novak she was born to be. With this in mind, I have made a bride purchase for you, and will be sending your new Omega to you shortly after this letter is sent. By my estimations they should arrive approximately a month after you receive this letter. There has been much trouble back here in New York thanks to Luc and his ways and the name Novak needs fresh life and standing. This is where you and your new Omega will come into play. The Omega will come with the money needed to hire an artisan of New York quality to capture the momentous occasion. Proof is required Castiel, per father and not myself, and he is looking forward to seeing the nuptials no matter how far he is. You are not to shirk this responsibility.
As far as things back home, Luc has been having a field day in town and will now have to deal with the consequences of his actions. I believe that I have found myself a mate which is rare, and even rarer still that I have already taken an Omega. Father is looking into what is needed to rectify this situation to keep our good name. Your brother Gabriel is still also looking for a mate, though he is being very selective. He has until the year is out, per father, to find himself a mate or Father will purchase one for him. Ruth is a wildling much like you were, and is in need of a much firmer hand than our soft willed brother. Perhaps you could write to him and let him know that you stand with father and I on the matter.
Mother has not been doing as well as she likes people to believe, the recovery from the pox has not been an easy task. The doctors are hopeful, but with the way Gabriel’s Omega passed almost a year ago now to the sickness… It is difficult to maintain high spirits. She asks of you often and I try to keep her abreast of the situation out West with less gruesome details than you send. She does love to hear about your horses though. We will need an updated likeness of Claire for mother’s mantel as well, if possible send it with your nuptials. Mother would be most pleased.
As far as the business side of things here are concerned, you receive your monthly stipend and know that things are going rather well. It was quite smart of you to invest the way that you have, and I am quite happy to report that things are looking even better for the next year. Enclosed is an article from the post here that I thought you may wish to read. It struck me as something you would talk with me about if I had not the pleasure of reading it myself. Your cool head for business is sorely missed even if it was better for you to live on your own in the wilds of Wyoming. Let me know how you find the article, the author is supposedly coming out with a pamphlet of some kind that I may send your way.
When it comes to the more pressing news of my mate… I may have some questions for you. I know that seems ominous, but there is not much more I can say on the matter until things are settled. That is until father gives his final word. I now understand you a little better brother and I pray one day you may be able to forgive my ignorance. I of course hope that you are hale and whole brother, and that the weather out on the savage lands treats you well. Give Claire a kiss from mother and perhaps someday soon I will meet the little angel in person.
C. Michael Novak III
Chapter 2: I Walk the Line
Chapter Text
An empty glass bottle shattered against the wooden wall of the little room Castiel called his office after reading his brother’s letter. His family, in all their meddling glory, had sent a letter telling him that they had found him an Omega. Again. This would be the third one that they have “gifted” him. The growl that left him had poor Bill Withers shaking in his boots over in the drunk cell. How he wished that his family would stop this nonsense.
"My, my Clarence, the temper on you. What's got your britches in a twist?" The voice of one of his dearest friends, Lady Masters, came from the open doorway where she stood. His eyes narrowed at her heeled boots and wondered just how she had snuck up on him. His anger, he supposed, had made him a bit blind.
She was waiting for an answer so he rumbled out his reply. "My family is meddling.... again." Castiel glared at the paper in front of him and tossed it across his desk so she could read it. The woman was noisier than anyone in town would give her credit for, but she knew how and when to keep secrets. As her eyes roamed the page Castiel leaned back in his sturdy wooden chair and tried to count backwards from fifty.
Meg chuffed and waved the letter, "Because that worked out so well last time. Amelia wilted in the sun out here, and April? She wanted to kill you. What kind of Omega are they sending this time?” Eyes darting back to the paper she suddenly had an afterthought, “Does she know about your... preferences?"
Of course there was that question, the one that made him wince."Probably not, my family likes to shame me for those, remember?" Castiel looked longingly at the bottle of whiskey but decided against it, he was on the job.
"Sheriff! There was another- ooof," the young boy Alfie, who helped out around town doing odd jobs, tripped into the office, "Sorry sir, there was another letter. Was a bit sticky, so it got stuck to Lady Bradburry's package."
Castiel grumbled but took the letter as Alfie straightened himself out. It was from his brother Gabriel, he skimmed through it and his ire settled a hair.
Dearest Brother,
Do not be alarmed at Michael's letter. Many things have happened back home since you've gone, and you will be happy to note that our Dear brother is no longer squatting on a stick. Though that is not a story for a letter, it is best told in person. I will be accompanying your new Omega, worry not. With Ruthie at my side we will wrangle the stage coaches all the way to the middle of nowhere, where you reside. It is about time I have visited the plains that you call home.
We will be following the postal route and should reach our mid way point a few weeks after this letter finds you. There is a man there named Balthazar, a friend, we will be visiting with for a day or two. I would request you at least send some sort of letter there so that your new Omega can learn something of you? As I said I will have more news to share once we reach your neck of the woods, so this letter will be a touch short. Stop frowning Cassie, it is not as bad as all that. I actually approve of this one. See you soon… well you know.
Your favorite brother, Gabriel
There were a few rather crude drawings on the back of the paper, most likely from Ruthie, that made Castiel smile. A pang of melancholy gripped him a bit as he thought of the little girl that he had never met. Ruthie was younger than Claire, only about five if his memory served correctly, as opposed to Claire’s seven. Castiel can remember the letter that Gabriel had sent when he found out he was going to be a father. Asking a thousand questions, and then the one after her birth where he tried to describe in his own poetic way about the birth. Luckily for him it went much smoother than Amelia’s did.
Out of his family members, Gabriel was the third oldest son, but got away with so much. In order, there was Michael, Luc, Gabriel, Anna, and then Castiel. Though Anna was between the two brothers in age, the boys were the closest of friends. He was also one of the few that knew of Castiel’s "secret" and did not judge him for it. Gabriel vouching for this new omega settled something in his chest, his brother would look out for him. He is very vocal about things that would harm Castiel, as in the case of April. The strongly worded letter that Gabe had sent after finding out what their father had done warned Castiel to stay away from the woman. It was a little too late at the time as he had followed father’s wishes, but Gabriel had known the right of it then.
"Alfie, take this to the inn." Castiel scribbled a quick note to master Cain, who ran the inn, about his brother's imminent arrival and the need for a suite when it occurs. Couldn’t have the man staying in a single room with Ruthie. At least Michael had the forethought to leave a timeline. He had just over a month to prepare himself for a new bride. "Let Master Cain know I need no reply." The boy nodded and took off without the note, sheepishly coming back a moment later to retrieve it then running off again. "My brother will be visiting with the new Omega, so we shall see how that goes. He claims that he is bringing his little one, Claire could use some company."
"That little angel is a sweet pea, you can always bring her over to visit with Lillith." It was a nice sentiment however Claire and Lillith Masters were not good friends. In fact they were only cordial to each other because Meg and Castiel were so close. As he thought about the offer, Meg moved into the building and sat opposite Castiel at his desk. "You look a little stiff there sheriff, care to stop by and let off a little steam later? It has been a while since you visited my den and put your preferred friend to good use."
Gods, he could use a little stress relief that was for sure. The mess with the daemons was getting to him, and he always was able to come home with his wolf a little less close to the surface after he visited there. Though he was loath to admit that to just about anyone else. The rest of the town believed that he was a mild mannered Alpha until someone pricked his ire. No one knew the extent of the suppressed emotion hiding under his skin. However, he did have responsibilities that kept him from seeking out this normal outlet. "I would have to ask Hannah to watch Claire longer if I were to do that. I do not want to saddle the girl with too much, she is still a girl and deserves to have a life away from the ranch. As it is, she has been attempting, in her own childish way, to woo me. "
It was a thought that made him grimace, the girl was barely a teen and yet she was trying to seduce him. The efforts were subtle at first, but the last attempt made him think he needed to seek out her father and put this issue to bed. The girl was kind, and good with children as far as Claire let him know, but he was uninterested especially now that his family is sending him another Omega to uphold the family name. Still, Gabriel saying that he liked this one made him feel a bit better. “Perhaps I could infringe upon Cain and Collette for a few hours and see if Claire would like to learn something from Collette in the kitchen?”
Meg huffs out a laugh and nods, “That girl was always going to be a problem, I told you that from the beginning. All calf eyed any time you walked into a room.” With a delicate shrug Meg unfolds her fan and begins to move the air around. “Why haven’t you told your brothers to shove off yet? You are a grown man Clarence. You came out here with nothing but the clothes on your back and a chip on your shoulder and you have turned this town into a safe haven. It is about damn time you made your own decisions.”
While Meg was not wrong in her words, it was a question he had often asked himself. Why did he continue to let his family make the big decisions in his life? So far they had always had his best interests at heart. The need of the wild, the need of a mate, the need to start his own pack…. All of these things that they had “pushed” upon him had turned him into the Alpha he was today. Their ideas, while only partially thought out when it came to his wants, had always been with his best interest at heart. Though father and Michael were a bit more tightly wound when it came to propriety, his brother Gabriel had mated for love and not social standing. He had always wanted the same for Castiel. Though they both knew the chances of that were slim to none. Male Omega’s existed to be sure, but the bride price for them was more than even a Novak could muster, and they were always secluded from society. That was Castiel’s fatal flaw, if you asked his family, his preference for the male persuasion.
"If you choose to come, they will be ready for you." Meg nodded and placed a hand on Castiel's shoulder. "This town needs its Sheriff relaxed and hale. You've kept those Daemons out of here, and we can never be thankful enough." This was the side of Meg that most of the town didn’t get to see. She ran the brothel, which in and of itself was not a bad thing, this town was lacking in many attractions, but it was still considered a seedy venture. The woman was as caring as the day is long, however most people just saw what she let them see.
No matter how long they had been friends, it still struck him that another person cared so much about him. "It's my job to protect this town Meg, you know I take it very seriously." It was much easier to brush off the sentiment behind his duty. Finding said duty came easy to him when he first got here to this relatively lawless town. They needed a hard headed alpha who had a strong desire to protect the large pack that was the town. The ailing man that had been in charge had no more steel in his spine than life in him, and took Castiel under his kind wing. May Joshua rest in peace.
"Too seriously sometimes. That little girl o'yours is growing like a weed and you are gonna miss it." This time Meg had a pinched look to her features as she looked him over.
Castiel stiffened, it wasn't that this was new information he just didn't like to think about it. His little Claire was growing up, and she was just as wild as he often felt. It was a terrifying prospect to say the least. She hadn't fully shifted yet, but he could feel the beast close to her heart just like him. He was a full shift Alpha, very rare. And very volatile. Which is why his family sent him out west. Keeping that volatile nature out in the wilds where it belonged. They were right to do so, and Castiel flourished out here as a man, and as a shifter.
Meg took in Castiel’s silence with a frown. "I'm just looking out for you Clarence. You know where to find me." She stood with a swirl of skirts and left. The clip of her heeled boots echoed on the old wood and Castiel sighed.
It wasn't that he was opposed to finding a companion, a mate.... he craved one. His wolf craved one, but thus far none of the Omegas he had met soothed his wolf. Amelia had made his wolf protective, though from her weak disposition. She was a prim and proper lady of the east and had not flourished out here. The weather had killed her as surely as the birth of their daughter. April had never evoked much of any feeling from him, but he had tried. Only to then be stabbed in the back, literally. His wolf had taken great pleasure in showing her what he was keeping contained before ripping her apart. The wretch had even tried to sell Claire to the Daemons to get back at Castiel for “sneaking off", which she had wrongly assumed was to cheat on her with Meg.
Shrugging off the memories he stood and collected his hat. It was time to do rounds and wake his deputy. Bobby would take the night shift tonight with Rufus. Not that he expected trouble.... but something in his gut told him they were gonna need all the help they could get.
Chapter 3: Take This Job and Shove it
Chapter Text
The only thing Castiel had to say about the time between when he received his letter and the time his soon to be bride was to arrive was that he was not wrong. They did indeed need all the help they could get. Though he had drawn the Daemons out of the city, they began to exact some sort of revenge plot, the local ranchers taking the hit. Cattle and other animals were disappearing, not too many to show that it was a problem, but Castiel had kept meticulous records. At his brother’s behest, he had sent off a letter to meet them at the town, well two. One for Gabriel and one for his intended.
Gabriel,
While I look forward to your imminent arrival, my home is not, at present, suitable for you and your young to stay. With the arrival of my new mate I have made some adjustments to my home and there would be no space for you to stay comfortably. As I am sure tMichael has informed you he wishes me to do my duty at first opportunity. I am sure you would not wish for your daughter to be present for such… sounds.I have made a request with Master Cain, at the inn, to house you and Ruthie and you in a suite, as well as keep Claire for the first full week after the ceremony. I too do not wish for one so young to hear… such things. I am sure the mating will strike the normal biological urges and wish for her to remain as innocent as possible. Collette is a fantastic teacher and loves to have Claire in the kitchen, I am sure Ruthie’s addition would be a treat.
As you have only stated that you wish to come to the west to better find yourself and possibly a potential mate, I am not sure of the specifics you are looking for other than a reprieve from Michael and father. If you are looking to obtain a job whilst here, there are several men who are looking to hire, or I could hire you on at the homestead as well. I have room within the budget for a second man and a small cabin can be easily built upon the lands there should you wish to stay for longer than a visit. I have missed you dearly brother and it would be nice to be closer to both you and Ruthie.
That being said, I have also included a missive for my intended, please see that they receive it. I know that you will get your mail as you are an Alpha. Their letter is in the smaller envelope. There is so much that I want to say to you, but I shall leave it for a time when we are in person. You know that words are not always my forte and it has taken me the better part of a week to get this letter into something more legible than just squiggles upon paper. I look forward to seeing you as always Gabriel.
Safe travels,
Castiel
The letter to Gabriel was personal, the way he would speak to his brother. Where the letter to his Omega was… perfunctory. A glossing over of his many attributes, a resume. He hated the damned thing, but sent it anyway in the hopes that there was something mixed in the muddled words that the new person in his life would like.
For my Future Omega,
I am not sure what my brother Michael has said about me. As I am not going to be learning about you until meeting in person I felt as though I could help not leave you at such a disadvantage. Many in your position already are, and I wish to not have that be the case with us.
My Name is Castiel James Novak, the fourth son of Charles and Naomi Novak of New York. I am the Sheriff in the small town of Angel, Wyoming. Before coming to this place to start the town, I worked in a small traveling show doing horse and gun tricks. It was not the best occupation, but it was enough to earn a good reputation and a substantial holding in the ranch I now operate. At present we are the leading supplier of cattle and horses in the valley. I am not sure if you have had the pleasure of being on a horse, but I find it quite freeing. Often when at the homestead I will take rides in the evenings.
If my family did not see fit to inform you, I do have a little girl, Claire, from my first bride. Even though we had a daughter, Amelia and I were not a good match. Unfortunately she was also not a good match for the west. She took ill before the birth and did not survive in the end. After Amelia my family saw fit to gift me with yet another bride. I am sad to say she was not a good fit for me either. I believe she was after a higher standing than anything else. I know nothing about you, and I find myself curious. Will you like the warm summers here? The smell of the air coming off the water and through the valley? Will you find it as freeing as I do? I suppose there is time to find out.
You have given up much to come out here to the dust capital of the world.I wish to make your journey, and transition to western life, as easy on you as possible. There is nothing so fancy as the cobbled streets of New York here. It is dust and dirt or waving prairie grass for endless miles. There is no need for grandures out this way and the less frills the better. That is not to discourage you, it is just a fact. When you come to the homestead, you will see that there is… very little in the way of the feminine touch. You may decorate it to your heart's desire, as long as its function remains true. It may take some time for me to get used to it, but I have been told that I need to relax. I would gladly leave the small comforts to you, and your much more capable hands.
I do apologize that we were unable to meet in person before my family signed your contract and agreed to our wedding. I do hope that I meet your expectations, or at the very least do not disappoint. Though I am taller than your current traveling companion, I have never been lauded as a beautiful man like Michael or Luc, so I hope that my person does not disappoint. Worry not, if you fear the same. I am sure you are lovely, and that any union so blessed by my family will yield the results they so seek. I am not sure if you want children. I fear the ceremony and subsequent mating will kick start our cycles. Perhaps before then if you do not wish to have children at this time, we can seek the counsel of the local healer, Madame Mosley, to take precaution. Though I apologize in advance if this is the route you wish to take, as it seems the Novak gene is rather virile. If after… you do not wish a repeat process, I will heed your wishes. Though worry not, I will remain faithful to you.
We shall see each other soon, within a month's time if my brother's estimations are correct. Please note that I may be a bit moody when you first arrive. I am afraid I have never done well with strangers but will be on my best behavior. I look forward to seeing, and learning more about, you so as to know how best to care for you in the future.
May you be safe upon your travels,
Your Alpha.
With the letters out of the way, the biggest of his worries seemed to be taken care of at that moment. He had spoken to Daniel, his head ranch hand, and let him know that there would be visitors, as well as asking him to have a word with his daughter Hannah. The girl's crush was becoming a bit much, and Daniel had agreed to bring her to heel. It was a process, and Hannah was stubborn, but Castiel had made it clear that he had an Omega coming, that he was to wed and that he was not interested in the girl. Or at least he had hoped.
There was plenty more to do on top of his duties as sheriff and overseeing the ranch. First thing was airing out his home. Luckily the weather had been cooperative in keeping the rains at bay as he opened the windows to bring in the breeze. Linens were all washed and dried, the spare bedroom had been emptied to make room for whatever the new Omega decided to do with it. Amelia had attempted to make it a craft room, and April had used it as a catch all for anything and everything she hadn't wanted to look at. There was quite the build up of things in the room.
Anything that was Claire's was returned to her, like her hope chest. There were some sketches that Amelia had framed that Castiel had made while traveling. Those had been hanging on the wall in the great room but April had found them plebeian. For now those would be slid under the bed in his room for safe keeping. Unsure as to the thoughts of his new omega and if she would enjoy such simple art. The room was swept free of debris and cobwebs, a woven rug was placed on the floor and a small writing desk sat in the corner. The Omega could do what she wanted with it…. Until a child came along.
Anticipating that the omega may be young and in want of another child, Castiel had already asked Daniel, and the few hands under his employ, to begin preparing timber from his land to construct a few new rooms off the back of the house. Potentially for another cabin if Gabriel and Ruthie choose to stay. Even if his brother did not take him up on the offer, the wood could be used to build a shed for supplies, or the sauna that Castiel had been thinking about. It would not go to waste. Additionally, some of that lumber was already being used to build an additional cold storage space for preservation. The garden he began on one side of his acreage had been thriving. So much so that he was able to sell quite a bit of produce to Garth at the general store. The additional storage space was in process before the letter from Michael arrived and would be done any day now.
As it stood, Gabriel and the Omega should have arrived last week. However, news came down the valley that there had been a small fire in one of the major towns along the trail, setting back stagecoaches… and everything else. For now he has a mystery to solve on Townsen homestead. Bobby is holding down the fort as it were, and Cain was keeping his eye out for arrivals. Hopefully he will be home before sundown.
Chapter 4: I Wouldn't Have Missed it For the World
Chapter Text
Dean practically vibrated in his seat on the stage coach. Each step closer to his new home was the furthest away he had ever been from his manor in New York. Before he was officially an omega he had dreamed of adventure and visiting the wild west. Now he was going to live it. Less than two months before this journey, Dean was helping his father prepare for a business meeting with the Novaks when the eldest son, Michael, arrived early. The man had frozen in his tracks and stared at Dean wide eyed and slack jawed before father had stepped in front of the Alpha and told Dean to head back upstairs. After that Dean was pursued by Michael for weeks, with his father’s approval. Mr. Novak had brought his father with him to discuss contract prices as he and his brothers listened in. That is when Michael saw his younger brother for the first time. Adam was still unpresented but he would be an Omega just like his brothers.
Michael Novak’s eyes turned bright red and he called for his father to hold him back. Adam was his true mate. Mr. Novak of course amended the contract to include Adam instead, which at first was disheartening for Dean. He was the eldest, and Michael Novak was the only Alpha that had taken any interest. Was he to be put back on a shelf to die alone? But like an angel Adam had yelled “What about Dean?”. Each Alpha in the room had turned to the boy shocked, as if they had forgotten anyone else was with them.
It was Michael that spoke, and only one word, “Castiel”. His father nodded, pulled out yet another piece of fine paper and began to construct a second contract. This one for Dean and his youngest son. Dean vaguely remembered the name Castiel, but the man had gone west with others when he was barely a pup. Michael had promised that Castiel would take good care of Dean, as he was the Sheriff of the town in which he resided. Just like that it was settled for Dean to be married, though of course he would have to travel quite a way.
The man Dean was to marry was a cowboy. It was like Dean’s every fantasy had come to life, well most every fantasy. When he came of age and presented as a rare male omega he dreamed he would find his true mate. That he would be loved and taken care of like in all the fairy tales. It was a dream he gave up on long ago. Mostly thanks to his father’s harsh words and the way he was treated as less of a person and more a possession. Wedding two of his sons off to the Novaks would put John Winchester in the highest league of standing in New York. One coveted Omega son left to sell. Dean hoped that Sammy held onto the letter that was left to him and would write when he had time. He was going to miss his brothers while out in the West.
Westward travel was slow. It seemed to take ages to get from place to place with the frequent stops, and the travelers that seemed to want the ride as silent as the grave. If not for his traveling companions Dean might have gone mad. Gabriel Novak and his young daughter Ruth kept things interesting. The man across from him was a conundrum to him, the shorter Novak brother, Gabriel. Whilst he brought along his daughter and new babe the man was not what Dean expected in an Alpha. Dean's father had been the only Alpha Dean was exposed to since his coming of age, and he was the complete opposite of the man in front of him. Gabriel was softer spoken, jovial even, and always had a smile for the children he doted upon. The little babe, Jack, had found his home in Dean's arms for a majority of the trip, needing the presence of omega scent. Even with the Alpha projecting peace and tranquility. Dean had come to love holding the little boy, missing when he did this for his brothers.
"Jack is going to be living with you and Castiel." Gabe spoke as they were approaching Dean's new home and popping some sort of sweet treat into his mouth.
“What?” Not sure if the words came out as more of a wheeze or a cough. Dean had to clear his throat and peer at the man.
Gabriel smiled at Dean’s tone, “The boy is my Brother Luc’s offspring. Unfortunately, the way he came to be is… unpleasant. Luc is going to prison, and the babe needed a safe haven out of the city. Our family isn’t as… put together as some, but the boy is ours and we protect what is ours. The Omega did not make it past the birth, but was friends with Castiel before he left. Kelly asked that the boy go to Castiel in the event she didn’t make it. So we will honor her wishes. My Omega passed a year ago with the pox, and I have not found a suitable match, hence why I am traveling with you. I believe a change of scenery will be good for all of us.“
“You speak so freely with me, even though I am an Omega.” Dean marveled at the man across from him who just grinned boyishly.
“My Dear Dean, the only difference between you and myself is that you can bear pups and I can only create them. You deserve more respect than the rest of the world has seen fit to give you. I will always speak plainly with you.” The babe in Dean’s arms squirmed to look up at the Omega from under his blankets. “The boy has taken a shine to you, this is very good.”
“Most pups enjoy being near an Omega.” Dean murmured, but his gaze was lovingly on the boy in his arms.
“That is not always the case. There is an Omega in my employ who makes pups cry.” Gabriel slid across the coach to sit beside Dean, “You are doing wonders for him. I’ve not seen him this content. Since the moment he came home he was either screaming or sleeping, no in between. I was convinced I would be thrown off the first stage coach because of his cries.”
Dean swallowed what he wanted to say and decided to take the compliment. A difficult task for him, to be sure. John Winchester was more likely to hurl drunken insults than ever compliment an omega. Even though all of his sons were Omegas. When his mother Mary had been alive, things were different. But his mother had been taken in a fire that took the whole block, she wasn’t the only dead but her passing had been so very hard on the Winchester boys.
The stage coach continued on its path. Following a beautiful winding river until laid out before towering cliffs beside it opened and made way for a beautiful town set against a rich blue sky. There was nothing like this back home, nothing at all. The town looked quaint from a distance, nothing over perhaps two stories tall, and the only other thing one could see was fields of grass and the occasional barn.
"Wow, Castiel said it was beautiful... but I never imagined it looked like this." Gabriel stared out the window of the coach in awe, the same expression on Dean's face. "Are you ready then Dean? To meet your intended Alpha?"
To say the words made him anxious would have been simplifying it. Dean was sure his heart would have beat out of his chest if not for the soft little coo of the baby in his arms drawing his attention from his fear. "Are-are you sure that I am welcome? Castiel was given little choice, and I know that he has been married before. I am nothing like his previous.... brides." Dean winced at the word. Sure he was currently wearing skirts per his station, and dressed in a more effeminate style.... It was how Omegas dressed back home. He was however decidedly not female.
"Trust me Dean, your differences from them are a boon in this case. My brother has already played the good son and did our Father’s bidding when he was sent his previous omegas, but they were not what he wanted." Well, that eased Dean’s worries not at all.
"And I-"
"Relax Dean, it’s going to be fine." Gabriel patted Dean’s shoulder and gave him a bright smile.
Dean thought back to the one correspondence that he received from his intended. It was stilted, and a touch awkward, however the alpha had promised to be faithful in their union and to care for his new bride. That was what had him worried. Castiel expected a woman, if his comparison to his previous omegas were to be believed.
As Dean worked to steady himself he felt like things were coming to a stand still. The stage coach had slowed down and Dean rushed to take a steady breath. This was it! He was finally here where he would make his new home!
Gabriel dropped out first when the door opened then helped his little girl. He then held out a hand for Dean who was still clutching Jack. Whatever Dean had been expecting... this empty street wasn't it. The tentative smile on his face slipped off as he swallowed down the bubble of harsh disappointment. "Ruthie, please settle for a moment so we can get the things off the coach. You want your bag back, correct?" Gabriel chided softly as his little one bounced around and kicked up dust.
The coachman unloaded the trunks as a tall man with long salt and pepper hair came out of the large building they were parked in front of. "Master Novak I presume?" Gabriel stiffened and whipped around only to nod. "I am Cain Wickham and I run the inn here in town. The Sheriff asked me to keep an eye out for you, he is rather busy as of late." At that Gabriel raised his eyebrow in question, "A few of the ranches have been having issues with missing cattle, nothing outrageous or too dangerous for our Sheriff to handle, quite the capable man."
Gabriel nodded and looked to Dean who had been watching the exchange quietly. "This is Dean, my brother's new omega. I must say I am at a loss as to where Castiel lives, he has me send all correspondence to the town." The coachman was unloading a few more things when Cain sent out a whistle.
“That does not surprise me, Castiel spends a great deal of time here in town. It's the easiest place to reach him, correspondence wise. At home all his focus goes to the ranch or Miss Claire.” Cain spoke as the gentle breeze caught the wisps of his salt and pepper hair.
A moment later a skinny boy darts around the edge of the inn. "Master Cain?"
"Ah. Alfie, can you hook up Maybell and a small wagon to take the Sheriff's new Omega, Dean, and his things to the sheriffs home?" The boy nodded, quite delighted and took off back around the building in an almost skid. "Sheriff Novak does not live far from town, just outside on a ranch of his own. Though with luggage it could be a hassle. We did not have a specific date for your arrival or I am sure the Sheriff would have been here with his own mode of transport. He does love his horses. Maybell is one I purchased from him, a very steady animal."
Dean swallowed and attempted a smile. He was just supposed to go there and wait? "I am sure Hannah will help you get settled, " Gabriel nodded. Who the hell was Hannah? The look on Dean's face must have asked the same question, because Cain answered.
"Hannah Banks is the omega currently watching the sheriff's daughter Claire while he works. She is the daughter of one of his ranch hands, Daniel Banks." Oh that sounds like a treat. Another Omega in his home already? Had his Alpha not promised him that he would be faithful? Quickly Dean tried to dispel such negative thoughts or he knew his scent would shift and that would not do. Already feeling out of place in this half of the country he didn’t need to add to it with anger.
“Do you know everything around here Master Wickham?" Gabriel laughed as Ruthie twirled about his legs.
"Quite, it is my business to know things, and Master Cain if you will. Master Wickham was my father." The man stood up a bit taller as the boy Alfie rounded the bend with the small cart. Another Cain whistle brought two boys who were naught but perhaps 10. "Gad, Zeke, take Mister Novak's things to the rose suite.... Gently." The boys dip in a small bow and begin picking up the pile of things. Gabriel sorts them as Alfie comes over to collect Dean's.
It was a slow process with just the one boy hauling the trunks, but he was happy to do it as he prattled on about the quirky little town. The boy assisted Dean up into the seat and Dean had to marvel at the fact that the boy was close to Adam’s age. However, he bore none of the softness of someone hidden from society. Aflie was a treat to behold as he lit up speaking about the little town as they meandered their way through.
“That there is the general store! Mr. Garth and his wife Bess run it! They are the nicest beta couple you will ever meet!” Pointing haphazardly to one store than jerking in his seat to look at another. “Oh! That is the Saloon! Mr. Benny runs it, though I am not sure what its actual name is any more. It was South Bend Saloon, but that was before the Sheriff came through and helped us rebuild the town. We were just a stop gap on the way through, ya know? I was just a babe, but the Sheriff saved this town so we named it after him.”
Now that was news to Dean. “You named the town after him?” He was sure that his tone had given away his nervousness, but it did not deter Alfie in the slightest.
“Well, yes? Castiel was a bit of a mouthful, but it’s the name of an Angel! So that’s why we call this place Angel! In his honor. He bought up a bunch of land outside town to put his homestead on and it keeps those lousy Daemons out of here, so it was fitting.” The pride in the lad’s voice seemed to make Dean feel like he wasn’t lying to him. “Oh, there is the Blushing Rose, Madame Masters runs it, she is friends with the Sheriff, so I am sure you will meet her.” Oh… again ‘this did not make him feel better.
Dean worried his lip in his seat. Castiel Novak had his pick of any female in this town and his family had to send him one? That made no sense at all, this town seemed to love him and Gabriel said he was kind, so why Dean? Was there something wrong with the man? Is that why he never took someone as his own?
The trip through town passed in a blur as Dean mulled over the questions in his head. Then they moved into a bit of open country. Ahead of them was a large metal gate that was thrown open with “Eden Ranch” on an archway across the top. “This is it! Eden is where the Sheriff lives. Back there is the Banks cottage, and I think off to the other side was a site they were clearing for a new barn or something.” Alfie shrugged as he snapped the reins and made Maybell move a little faster.
Dean looked up at the home that was to be his own from the bench seat. It was sturdy and plain, but functional. A wooden wrap around porch held a pair of large boots beside the door, and a small crude pot with a slightly wilting plant. "When the sheriff came here he wanted to run the ranch and that’s it, but he saw how things were and helped fix them. The town is much better now that he is sheriff. He chased out the former corrupt one and has protected the people here since." Alfie, the boy, rambled on as he brought the cart to a stop.
The noise of the cart brought a young woman to the front door, a little girl peeking out the screen door behind her skirts. "Alfie? What is this, you know that the Sheriff is out....?"
"Oh! Hannah! This is Dean, the Sheriff's new Omega!" Alfie beamed happily as he jumped down and held up a hand for Dean to climb down with Jack tucked into his chest. When Dean looked up there was shock and anger on Hannah's face. "Master Cain asked me to bring him here and get him settled in!"
"I see.... you are late."
"Our coach was delayed a week outside of Fort Hall. I know that Mister Novak sent a letter here describing our delay." Dean did not like the look in the girls eye, and that is what she was a girl. Not even sixteen summers, a child herself. Though Dean knew out here things were different. "You must be Hannah Banks, Master Cain spoke highly of you. You have been taking care of my husband's daughter."
Something angry and cold slid behind Hannah's eyes for a moment. "Yes, I suppose that will be your job now."
Dean inclined his head as he grabbed a small travel case and walked closer to the front door. He had to stop short at the smell coming from within. Hannah currently smelled of moldy bread, but there was a soft scent of curiosity, almost like sweetened cream, coming from the little girl. The house itself smelled of rich comfortable leather, wild herbs, and something... warm and heady.
The smell stopped him in his tracks as he stared behind Hannah at the inside of the house he could see over her shoulder. The scent was so powerful, so embedded in the home Dean wasn't sure he was going to survive. Alfie dragged one of Dean's trunks up to the door and frowned at Hannah, "Could’ja step back Hannah? Need to get the things inside."
"I don't know this Omega and he is not welcome while the Sheriff is out." The words were said low and cold.
"Hannah Banks, you betta not be stoppin’ this omega from enterin’ his home." A deep skinned woman came walking up the drive with a white apron on and a bonnet on her head. "Castiel has been talkin’ 'bout his Omega coming for weeks, an’ having me come and make sure the home is ready for his new bride. Don't you be stubborn, I know ya daddy told you not to reach above ya station. He has a good match for ya." The woman stopped beside Dean and peaked at the baby in his arms. "What a sweetheart you are, Miss Claire is gonna love you."
"Miss Missouri! This is Dean!" Alfie made an introduction, still awkwardly holding the trunk.
"Dean, wonderful to meet you. I am Missouri Mosley. I handle all ailments in these parts. Master Novak has a garden here he lets me pull a small selection of healing herbs from for the town’s needs. Let's get you inside and settled. Sheriff Novak has been waiting for you for a long time."
Dean clears his throat as Missouri walks him into the house, past Hannah and Claire, the latter of which follows them into the main room of the house.
The layout is simple but efficient. The main room of the house holds a great stone fireplace, a few high back chairs, and a long rather comfortable looking couch. A few rough made tables and hand knit blankets seem to be the only real adornments in the room, save the candles of course. There are also entryways into other rooms. One holds a tiny cramped writing desk and a chair with various scraps of paper clinging to the walls with little tacks. Another holds a small bedroom with a hope chest at the foot of the bed and several small dolls, Claire's room he presumes. There is an empty bedroom about the size of Claire's that has no furniture but there is a woven rug and slightly worn lace curtains on the windows.
"Papa cleaned this room, said you may want your own space." Claire spoke, nearly startling Dean. "Papa didn't say anything about a baby..."
Dean looked at the girl, he didn't know about the baby either until just a few moments ago, so he understood. "This is Jack, and your uncle Gabriel says he's going to be staying with us." He was slightly out of his element as he had helped raise two boys and never had a hand in raising a little girl, but he would try his best.
"Oh? I suppose that is okay then. Are you.... nice?" The girl tilted her head to the side to watch Dean.
"I like to think that I am, but if I'm not you can tell me so and I will try and fix it?" That seemed to be okay with the girl as she smiled and nodded. Behind Dean the smell of moldy bread increased.
"Hannah, I think it’s time you went home." Missouri turned to the girl who made a sound in the back of her throat.
"Mister Novak wanted Me to watch Claire-"
"Because his omega died during birth Hannah. He now has a new Omega, and it is time you went home. Dean here can handle it." A warm hand landed on Dean's shoulder as he turned to watch Hannah.
The girl’s face was puffy and red like she was holding back tears or perhaps a scream. A high pitched sound left her throat. "I can assure you that Claire is in good hands. I assisted in raising two children, my siblings." Dean felt himself standing taller, emboldened by the smell of the home around him. "If my husband has an issue with that I take responsibility, but you are dismissed Hannah."
If looks could kill, Dean supposed he would be dead twice. Instead the girl glared and with a huff slammed out the front door so hard it rattled on its hinges. “That girl, I swear. If I didn’t know her papa raised her right I would have thought she was born in a barn, where are her manners?” Missouri patted Dean on the arm, “Don’t you worry ‘bout nothin’. Everything is gonna work out just fine, you’ll see. I’ll come by to visit while Castiel is away, but your place is here.” With that and a look that made Dean feel as if she could see right through him, she nodded and made her exit. Though Dean could hear her whistling as she went through the herb garden out back.
“Are you going to be my momma now?” Claire asked when they were alone and Dean swallowed harshly. This was not how he thought his first day at his new home was going to go, and it was still very early.
Chapter 5: I'm in a Hurry (And Don't Know Why)
Chapter Text
Dean managed the first night alone in the house, Claire letting him know her routine as he had dismissed Hannah after only a handful of minutes in her presence. Missouri had come by with some goat’s milk and bottles for Jack that he was ever so grateful for, even if his chest was already starting to feel heavy and full. It was known that omegas could produce milk for offspring that was not theirs in times of need, or if they saw a child as theirs. Which is what Dean assumed was happening. He had bonded with Jack during the trip, and his inner omega was feeling the pull.
Daniel, Hannah's father, had come by and brought with him Claire's old bassinet. It had been in storage in the back of one of the old barns. The man had also apologized for Hannah's behavior, letting Dean know that she would not be back unless asked. Which was a relief. Dean was unsure he could handle the girl in his space after such open animosity.
Jack had spent the night quietly in the bassinet, peaceful in slumber in the great room. Mostly because Dean felt that there was little to no room in the master bedroom. Dean was also unsure if he was welcome in that room. It would have been easier if his husband had come home, but something had kept him away. The man was the sheriff after all, he was bound to be busy every now and again. Dean supposed it was something he would have to get used to.
The only thing Dean managed to do that night before curling up on the couch in front of the bassinet, was to move his trunks into the spare room. The letter Castiel had sent him had mentioned that he could decorate. When they had stopped for a while on the journey he was able to take the time and do a little shopping. A frame for his picture of his family, some crafting supplies, some cloth to make a few dresses or to use as curtains perhaps, and a small child’s tea set. It was something that his mother had once set aside for her children, currently in Adam’s possession, but Dean wanted to pass along the tradition as silly as it was. Dean may not be the little girl’s Omega but he was the new family Omega and he wanted to make a good impression. He wanted to make his own memories with this new family he was to call his own.
Dean was up before the sun, not an uncommon practice back home, but here in the west it was different. New York was never peaceful and quiet like this, the stillness was strange. Claire slept peacefully, as did Jack, so Dean puttered into his new kitchen. It wasn’t quite as spartan and primitive as he had assumed it would be. Dean was able to locate what he needed to make breakfast when the children woke. It also seemed as if his husband stocked both tea and coffee. To which Dean was eternally grateful.
Keeping himself busy, Dean did a quick cleaning of the kitchen. Using the time to note where everything was, anything he would need, and of course what he could do with what was in front of him. This led him to meandering through the house to make sure he hadn’t missed anything, which he had. There was a small room with a large wooden tub, a washroom. It seemed this is where his husband both washed himself and his clothes. There was a door in this room that led outside to cart the water in and out along with a few large sturdy buckets.
This meant that Dean could prop open the door and start to gather some water to wash the clothing that had been dirtied on the trip here. First, he located the soap and washboard which was easy to find. It seemed Castiel had cleared an easy path to a well where the water could be easily gathered. It took three trips with both buckets to gather the amount of water that Dean deemed appropriate to do the laundry. On the road he had tried to alternate two outfits so that there wouldn’t be too much to wash, but with the delay a third was added to the mix. All of them went in to soak as Dean puttered about the house to make sure there was no other washing. Gabriel had taken most of Jack’s dirty things so that was something he did not have to worry about. There were a few of his husband's shirts, covered in dust, lying on the back of a chair in the writing room that he gathered along with a few simple dresses from Claire's room.
The last room he checked was Castiel’s room. Mostly because the smell of it was so overwhelming. The wildness of the herbs here was so much more potent than in the other rooms, as if this was the place he spent the most time. When Dean opened the door he had to grab onto the frame to keep himself upright. That, and to keep his inner Omega from launching itself into the bed and burrowing into the covers. It was the strangest sensation to experience. The scent soothed him but also made him feel warm all over. Even if he was not supposed to be in here without his husband's permission. It was true, based on the man’s words, that Castiel seemed to be a forward thinking Alpha. Less likely to treat Dean as a piece of furniture, but until he met the man there was very little Dean could be positive about. It did seem there was a small pile of undergarments and things on the side of the bed. Dean took measured steps into the room to collect them and add to the pile. Leaving the room he quickly closed the door behind himself and let out a deep breath he hadn’t realized he was holding.
This would not normally be a bad thing, but he was holding his Alpha’s dirty underclothes to his chest, so the subsequent breath made him whimper. That slightly spicy and heady scent was so much richer coming from the cloth in his hands. It would be, seeing as the cloth would be pressed to the man's most intimate places in the high heat of the sun. If Dean sprinted into the washroom none were awake to see it. Jack still layed peacefully in sleep and there was nary a sound from Claire’s open door. All the clothes went into the tub, save the one pair of drawers clutched in Dean’s hand. The smell of Alpha was clouding his senses and he could feel slick begin to leak from himself. A phenomena that had never happened outside of a heat. Dean had never in his life believed that it could happen. There were no other Omegas that he could ask, and of course his father would never talk about such things. Could an Alpha’s scent alone trigger this?
The thought itself scared Dean more than he wanted and he shakily let the garment drop to the water with a pitiful sound. He had only been here a day, and already he was embarrassing himself! It would be disrespectful of him to want to keep the things, they were dirty and needed to be washed. Doing so was being a good omega. Keeping his Alpha’s home clean and tidy, just as he was instructed. That bit of information floating around in his brain was what helped him settle into the task of actually doing the laundry. Once all the laundry had been scrubbed, he took the wooden pins and attached the laundry to the line outside the back of the house just as the sun was coming up over the horizon. Claire would be up soon, so Dean emptied the tub as best as he could. Then dragged it outside to dry before heading back into the kitchen to start the fire in the stove and make breakfast.
As it turned out, Claire was an easy child. The darling girl helped Dean learn her routine, and was so excited to learn that Dean could teach her how to read and write. Apparently her previous Omega had not been thrilled at the prospect of teaching the pup anything, and Hannah had never been instructed to. Jack too was as easy as the day was long. Not quite old enough to crawl, but old enough to be laid out on a big blanket in the main room as Dean worked with Claire on her letters.
It had been almost a week on the homestead without meeting his husband. At first it was fine, he was able to learn to fit into the home, but the longer he was here the harder it was to resist the temptation of his inner omega. By day three he had broken down and thrown himself onto his husband's bed and made a nest of the blankets there. His inner omega finally content basking in the scent as the children slept. Claire didn’t like that Jack was alone in the big room, so she insisted Jack’s bassinet stay in her room. This left Dean alone in the main room, making it easy to give into the omega instincts pulling at him. The smell surrounding him settled something deep within and he felt like he was finally home. That was when it clicked. This man, this alpha, all the way out here was his Mate . Dean had found him.
Since then Dean had spent almost every moment he could inside that room, wishing his alpha was with him. Never before, outside his heats, had Dean felt this continual arousal. Dean had given up, long ago, on the dream of finding his mate. Once he realized his father would only use him as a bargaining chip. The most people could hope for was compatibility on a base level but mates? That was rare. Like stuff of legends rare. Dean’s mother and father had a high compatibility and when John lost Mary it broke him, and they weren’t even mates. Somehow Dean found his mate in Wyoming, so far from home. If just the smell of his mate could both soothe and inflame him like this, what would meeting the man do?
When the kids were sleeping Dean would find himself daydreaming about the Alpha. Unfortunately, all he had were some old images that Gabriel had provided. A wide eyed boy with a shock of dark hair and a somber expression. How did those features morph in adulthood? How did becoming an Alpha look on this man? Dean could only imagine that to be a sheriff, and someone who ran an operation as large as the ranch, the man must have some stature. It was not easy to do what he had seen Daniel doing out the windows, nor tame horses as some of the other ranch hands had. Castiel must have done that before the property was profitable enough to hire on.Meaning there must be at least some bulk to the man. The omega in his head swooned at the thought of large calloused palms sliding across his skin and thick arms cradling his body. Being one's Mate must mean that Castiel would not turn him away because he was male… right? That is how it worked in the stories. Mates superseded all things because they were precious. Dean just needed to actually meet his husband and find out.
Chapter 6: When You Say Nothing at All
Chapter Text
Castiel was bone tired. It had been just over a week since he had seen his daughter but he knew she was in good hands. The town of Angel loomed in front of him in the warm sunrise. It was good to be home. Normally he wouldn’t have wanted to be gone so long. However, he caught a lead on a small group of Daemons that were stealing the cattle. First he had to track them, then apprehend them. Of course nothing went to plan and he was almost shot in the process. As it was he killed two of the men in the shootout, returned 30 cattle, and hauled back more stolen goods on two of the gang’s horses. There was one captive that he managed to capture and was bringing him back to town for questioning. Bobby and Rufus could watch over him tonight. All Castiel wanted was to see his daughter… and have a bath. He would probably shoot someone for a bath right about now.
As the horses breached the town entry there were shouts to him in greeting, but he just waved tiredly and headed directly to the sheriff’s station. After tying the horses up he hauled the prisoner into the building and tossed him, none too gently, into a cell before locking the door with finality and looking around the building. No one was in the office at the moment, but as soon as the horses were seen someone would come out from wherever they were hiding. Next off the horses were the stolen goods. He would compare them to the reports later and return the items. Their masters had been missing them for some time, they could wait one more night.
“Well, look what the cat dragged in. You look like hell.” Bobby was the first to return to the station carrying a steaming mug of coffee and some post.
“I feel like it too.” Castiel rolled his shoulders and felt the pops trail down his spine. “Anything new to report?”
“Naw, nothin we couldn’t handle. Couple a kids made a mess, we straightened them out. Got a few new travelers in, but nothing out of the ordinary. Missouri says you need to stop by for some things on your way home.” Bobby shrugged and took a sip from his mug. “Bumped into her at the post office, damn woman always seems to know things she shouldn’t.”
“Oh? Well, it sounds like you had a rather easy go of your week.” He leaned down and thumbed through the post on his desk, “I am going to need to restock ammunition. Have we put in this month’s order yet?”
“Nope. Rufus has it there, on his desk, he was waiting for your approval before sending it off. Garth was fine with that.” Bobby motioned to Rufus’ desk where the paper lay ready to be signed off on. “What’s got you needing to restock boss? Aren’t you one of those, ask first, shoot second kind?”
“Tell that to the Daemons.” Castiel tossed down a few pistols he managed to confiscate. “Lock those up, and keep an eye on things.” As he watched the other man scoop up the pistols he noticed the letter on his desk. The writing on the front was Gabriel’s so he grabbed it. “I will stop to see Missouri then take those horses home. I will be back tomorrow morning.”
“You got it, Sheriff.” Bobby tipped his hat and stowed the weapons away as Castiel headed back outside and walked across the road to visit Missouri’s little shop.
“There you are boy, I was wonderin’ when you would get your behind back here. Gone a week, that poor thing is suffering all alone out there in that house without you. Should be ashamed of yourself.” The woman was busy packing some items in a bag, but still had the ability to scold Castiel as she went. “I had Garth send Samandriel with some supplies so that they didn’t starve. What were you thinking? You are not a young buck any more boy, can’t go runnin’ off like that and leave your family behind.”
“I know that Claire is here, which is why I did everything in my power to come home safe, Missouri. I take care of this town, same as you, but I have a gun and a badge. I have to do the job.” Of course Castiel knew that he had responsibilities here, and true he had never been gone for quite this long, but he knew things here were in good hands. “What do you mean by suffering?”
“Castiel, it is not just Claire! Did you already forget you had someone coming for you? Your brother and your omega have been in town for almost as long as you’ve been gone.” Missouri sounded angry now, not just scolding.
That made a bit more sense as to why he was in trouble with the usually good natured woman. Of course his new omega would show up when he was gone. Naturally. “They are here? Gabriel said they had been delayed… shit. Are they at the inn?” He made an aborted move to go in that direction but the woman stopped him as she kept talking and packing.
“Your brother is there with his little one, but your omega is where they belong. Not some inn.” The woman tuts and hands Castiel the two large bags she packed. “They have been taking care of Claire while you were away, it seems that they have bonded. It's a good thing too, Claire needed a bit of guidance on that front.”
“Bonded? Claire- what? Some random omega has been in my home alone, with my daughter, the whole time I have been gone?” He clutches the bags to his chest and goes to run out of the place.
“Don’t you dare Castiel. That omega is not a random omega, that is your omega or have you forgotten?” With a glare that could probably curdle milk Missouri makes him stop in his tracks. “Now you know that I would never let anything happen to that little girl. Claire is in safe hands, in fact look at this.” Missouri pulled a piece of rough paper up from under her little counter and showed it to the Alpha. “Claire made this for the clinic, wrote out her name n’ everythin.”
“Claire can write?” Castiel took a step closer and glanced down at the drawing that he recognised as done by Claire with some crude little writing.
“That Omega o’ yours has been teaching her. Claire seems mighty keen on this one sticking around. No need for you to go stick your foot in it before you even get back there.” The woman shook her head and sighed, though it seemed to be a happy sound. “I am disappointed that you have been gone so long, but this is gonna be interestin’. You best call for Alfie to come with the wagon, you are gonna need a few things from Bess before we head on out. I will bring Claire back here for Collette, don’ you worry.”
“Missouri, I- I don’t understand… why would you bring Claire back here?” Almost in a daze he let the woman drag him a little way down the street to where the general store was. Alfie was standing out front with a stick of jerky.
“There you are child, go gather Master Cain’s cart if you please. I need to be takin’ the sheriff back to his home with some supplies. I will bring it back along with Missus Claire.” Alfie blinked and looked between the two adults twice before nodding and running along to the inn. “Come on now, we have supplies to gather. Lucky you, I ordered ‘em special. Or you wouldn’t have half a what you need.”
The small bell above the door tinkled and Bess beamed at them both from the counter. “Miss Missouri, how wonderful to see you. I have your order all ready and the one you asked for to be ready for the sheriff as well.”
“You are a blessing Bess, how’s that little one of yours treating you? Feel it movin’ yet?” Missouri collected the sack for herself and nudged the Alpha to grab the two others.
“Mmmhmm, and Garth felt this morning too… Truth be told Missouri, I think there may be more than the one in there. Garth felt a kick and I did too in another spot quite a ways away, at the same time.” Bess let her hand drift down to her stomach. Bess was talking about a baby?
“Congratulations,” Castiel made the word fall from his lips as he was still a little dazed and confused as to what happened right in front of him.
“Thank you sheriff, Garth is mighty excited.” The woman glowed with happiness.
“You bet, I am gonna get the sheriff here home and then bring Miss Claire into town to visit with her uncle. After that I will come do a check and see if we can’t figure out if there is another little one in there.” Missouri escorted the sheriff outside as Bess waved them off. Alfie was just pulling up to a stop with the cart. “Good boy Alfie. Now mind my store for a little while, just keep an eye on things. Don’t go sellin’ nothin’. I will be back shortly. Come on sheriff, I ain’t got all day.”
The sense of confusion didn’t leave Castiel as he found himself packed into the cart. The horses he was taking home tied to the back so they could walk with them. The journey was swifter than he ever remembered it being. It took no time at all for him to see his little home on the horizon. “Now, be mindful that I will be back at some point to look in on you both, and to look over your new bites.” Missouri was still talking, not that he noticed as they pulled up to the house. There was something… something in the air that had him sitting up straight.
Something soft and warm floated on the breeze as surely as Claire’s little dress did on the laundry lines out back. A warm honeyed sort of whisky flavor that made him start salivating. In movements he wasn’t aware he was making he unfolded himself from the cart as Missouri walked up to the door and into the house. A quick peek around the side of the building saw that Daniel was hard at work and that there were a few hired hands helping with the timber. They finished the cold storage in his absence. That was good, plenty of time to preserve what needed preserving.
While Castiel was busy floating with that wonderful scent in his nose Missouri walked out of the house with a bag, a bundle in her arms, and Claire holding her hand. “Papa!” Claire ran after him and he groaned as she hit him full force. He picked her up and spun her around. “Are you gonna help Dee feel better? I want Dee to stay! Please!”
“Come on now sugar, Papa is gonna help Dee get better but he needs to do it alone. You and little Jack will be back before you know it. Come on now up in the cart for me. You best get inside with your things Castiel…” Missouri patted him on the shoulder as he collected the things she made him bring and watched as she settled the bundle in her arms into a basket. “Go on, they are in good hands.”
Watching with full arms as Missouri guided the cart to the hands and they took the horses before she headed back to the main road. The woman was like a thundering stampede of horses, you never quite knew what was going to happen. Shaking the thoughts from his head he entered his home and was smacked in the face by that soft and warm smell again. There was a hint of dripping sugar… honey maybe? Legs that normally held him firm began to feel like jelly. He set the bags on the rough worn table and went in search of the source of the smell.
It permeated the house, but seemed to be coming from his room. Approaching slowly on rather unsteady feet, Castiel heard a deep groaning coming from behind the door making his heart race. The smell sunk deep into his bones and he recognized it for what it was, an omega in heat. His Omega in heat. With a growl he ripped open the door and clutched at the frame, letting his eyes roam the room. He found his bed had been turned into a nest and the thick scent of slick was coming from the moving bit of blankets. Still he could not see his Omega and the Alpha in him was becoming demanding. “Omega…” The word was growled. The blankets shifted and he heard a moan as the omega was scrambling to uncover itself.
The last of the blankets fell away to reveal the omega beneath. The air in Castiel’s lungs ceased to exist. When he became an alpha, all those years ago he never once thought he would get what he desired, his dream… and yet here it was squirming on his bedsheets. Sweat danced across sun kissed skin, bespeckled with freckles, and flushed in the throes of heat, lay a male omega. There was a distinct crackle of something in the air and Castiel felt himself move. All those years of pining after some faceless male omega, and now his dream mate was in his bed waiting for him. Golden green eyes met him as he struggled to tear off his layers and kick off his boots. Never was there a greater need to be naked than in this moment.
“Alpha!” The omega on his bed gasped and lunged for him just as Castiel removed his shirt. Luckily his reflexes held as a wall of over heated muscle slammed into him and a nose pressed into his neck. The deep rumbling purr that slid from the man in his arms was a balm to his soul as he kicked off his jeans and urged the man backwards. Once back on the bed it was a fight to get the omega to let go of his neck. He did it even with the whimpers it pulled from the beautiful man.
“Omega.” With each breath of heat tinged air he could feel his own rut stir low in his belly and he needed to get this Omega horizontal now. The urge was riding him hard, but he needed to make sure that he did not turn into one of the criminals that he put behind bars. He needs consent. “Omega look at me.” Lacing just enough alpha tone in his voice to get compliance, he watched those golden green eyes shoot to him before asking, “Do you want this Omega? I need to know now.”
“Alpha- ,” the man started and shook his head as if to clear it, his fingers digging into Castiel’s shoulder to keep him in place. “Castiel, I- I’m sorry the heat… I should have had more time but you- your scent… I need you Alpha. Just you… please.”
“Omega I-“
“Dean- please, ‘m Dean…. Just Alpha please.” Dean whined and tried to tug Castiel closer to him.
“Dean.” The name came out a rumble as he laid the omega back on the bed and let his body cover him. “I’ve got you my sweet omega… my mate.” With each word whispered into his ear Dean shivered and squirmed under him. Soft pants left his mouth as he tilted his head back and exposed his throat to his alpha. There were no words to accurately describe the sensations flitting through his blood at the sight. His omega with his neck bared, all for him. Who was he to resist?
Castiel’s mouth latched quickly onto Dean’s mating gland which caused Dean to buck upwards, putting their naked bodies in close contact. So close, the sweat and pheromones from Dean’s skin transferred to Castiel and the Alpha loved it. Two sets of naked hands explored a new canvas of flesh as their instincts began to take over. His teeth worried the skin making the man below him groan and buck again with soft pleas for more. The inner alpha in him was snarling, begging him to take their mate, but Castiel was trying to make this good for the Omega.
Dean's fingers tangled in his hair and tugged, detaching the Alpha from his neck. Dean pulled Castiel’s lips to his own. Nowhere near as soft as a first kiss between them should be. It was all teeth and tongues, bites and shows of force, but neither complained. Castiel revealed in the fact that though this was an omega under him, he was no meek wallflower. He would demand just as surely as his alpha would. A heady sensation. The smell of slick and arousal grew thicker the longer they kissed but did not join. It was making it all the harder for Castiel to hold back his alpha.
The need for air forced their lips to part. His omega whined, the man needed this as much as he did. It was difficult for him to maneuver seeing how neither wanted to separate, but Castiel got just enough room between them to slip inside his omega for the first time. That first side was tight and hot, and everything he didn’t know he needed. It was like they forgot to breathe as Alpha slowly slid into his omega. It was perfect, like coming home.
Bottoming out Castiel held and let his senses guide his alpha, making sure that his omega was comfortable. Seconds ticked by and he felt himself twitch. Dean moaned and clenched his inner muscles, making something slide into place in his being. Smoothly, with a finesse that he hadn’t known he possessed, Castiel began to thrust into his mate. Long, deep strokes that had Dean clutching at his back and clinging to him as if his life depended on it.
Hearts beating faster, Cas speeds up his thrusts making Dean moan more and toss his head back onto the pillows exposing his neck once again. The bruise Castiel sucked into the flesh around his mating gland is a harsh blotch on the tanned skin and it makes his inner Alpha pleased to see it. A high pitched whine rumbles from Dean's throat as he rushes closer and closer to climax. The sound makes Castiel’s hips stutter, making him hit Dean in a place that has him gasping Castiel’s name and coming in watery ropes across his stomach. The sight and smell of his omega coming was enough to toss Castiel over the hurdle as well. As his knot swelled into place deep inside his omega, he leaned down and claimed him. Sharp teeth piercing the soft skin of Dean’s neck had the omega lurching up and coming once more.
Smug satisfaction was all Castiel could feel from his Alpha as he released the bite and licked the wound clean, taking care of the tender skin. A bass-like rumble started in his chest as he held onto Dean and rolled them onto their sides. Content to just hold his mate in the nest that Dean had created. For now, nothing mattered except this soft comfort. Sure of the fact that they were safe, and nothing would bother the new mates, the Alpha joined his mate in sleep as they waited out his knot.
Chapter 7: Ring of Fire
Chapter Text
Dean woke slowly, feeling boneless, and more relaxed than he ever remembered feeling in his whole life. Hazy memories floated back to him, the smell of his Alpha had brought about an early heat. All day yesterday Dean fought it, wishing that his mate was here with him, that he even knew what the man looked like, let alone having him ease the pain in his body. Though the heat had come on quickly from prolonged exposure to the Alpha’s scent and pining after the man who owned it but wasn’t around, it was like any other heat Dean had in the past. The cramps and pain were not quite as bad as they could get the first day, but he knew that the next day, today, would be a real problem.
Missouri had stopped by like she said she would and had seen the state he was in. It was her promise that his Alpha would be home in the morning and that she would take care of the babies that allowed Dean to let his guard down and prepare for the heat he knew was coming. Buckets of water were collected and waiting in the bedroom for him to keep hydrated and he had turned the bed into a proper nest. From what little he knew about heats and matings, his body was pumping out the signals to try and get his alpha to reciprocate… even though he wasn’t there. Pheromones didn’t care about things like distance.
Bags were packed for the children, the night before and he promised Claire that he was fine just not feeling all that well. Jack had even seemed particularly clingy and had a rough time being put to bed. However he had finally gotten them to sleep and finished bringing some rations into the bedroom, dried fruits and jerky mostly. Small things that could easily be eaten between bouts of heat. Like clockwork, Dean woke before the sun and his heat hit him full force. Like it knew that his alpha was on his way.
There was a vague impression that Missouri had come to collect the children, but all he could do was whimper and rut against the sheets beneath him as a fresh wave of his Alpha’s scent began to permeate the house. Suddenly, his Alpha was there smelling like wild herbs and Dean had never felt so wanton while in heat in his life. Sure he got sexual cravings, since the age of eighteen as most omegas did, but this was different. Though his body was hot to the touch and he was sweating up a storm, he felt like a sexual creature and not just a ball of hormones. Like his inner Omega knew something he did not, so he trusted his instincts.
That first rough grumble of “Omega” made Dean a whimpering mess. If he had thought he was producing slick before it was nothing compared to after that moment. The Alpha’s voice was like the smooth whiskey that his father kept in his cabinet at home, but poured over ice and more. The very first time he laid eyes on his Alpha was surreal. The man was beautiful, tall and strong, fully clothed and smelling of an oncoming rut. Watching the man’s eyes light up as he took stock of Dean was… everything. Apparently Dean had nothing to worry about and he was exactly what Castiel wanted. If his reaction was anything to go by, Castiel was attracted to men.
After the first touch of skin it was a little hazy, warm and golden at the edges as Dean remembered Castiel asking for permission to mate him. Permission to take him like his body was craving. Honorable, his inner omega supplied, and Dean had to agree. Not many alphas in the same position would be able to hold back enough to ask if he was sure, if that was what he wanted. Truth be told: Dean could barely remember what he told his Alpha. All he knows is that he was ready to go and all in. The scent of his Alpha alone was enough to sustain him, but then the man took him and… the pleasure from their coupling was beyond words. Castiel was an attentive lover and he listened to every sigh and moan Dean delivered, and it amazed the omega that he came twice on his Alpha’s cock.
Dean could feel the blush coursing through his flesh as he thought about it, Castiel’s knot swelling full and the warm pump of his Alpha’s cum marking him from the inside as sharp canines bit into his flesh. It was almost enough to start another wave, but his body was still currently content to stay tucked into his Alpha. The steady rumble that had started in the man’s chest after he licked the mating bite clean was still there clear in his ear, and making the feeling of safety more solid.
Sighing, Dean tucked his head into the Alpha’s neck and scented deeply from the source. Never before had he been this close to an Alpha. It was a strange sort of intimacy, scenting from the neck. Only mates and children did this, seeking comfort from the neck scent glands. Usually courting Alpha’s were granted access to scent from the wrist, but this was… new, exciting. Letting his instincts take over, Dean rubbed his nose over the gland a few times and sighed, Castiel smelled like heaven. Though smelling him was not quite enough for the Omega, instinct demanded that he taste the skin under his lips to see if the Alpha tasted as good as he smelled. So of course he followed those instincts.
If anything it seemed the alpha reacted favorably to Dean’s little kitten licks if the increase in that rumble’s volume was anything to go by. “Good Morning Omega.” That smooth but deep tone went straight to Dean’s slick glands. Arms like thick steel bands wrapped around him and pulled him closer into the alpha’s heat. “I need to see the bite and make sure it is cleaned properly. I… I feel that I may have been a little rough with you.”
“You were perfect Cas.” Dean found himself whispering as he snuggled in, but it seemed Castiel was going to be adamant that he check over the bite. So, with a sigh he leaned back and exposed that part of his neck. The flesh was sore, like with any healing wound, tender to the touch. However, there was no inflammation since Castiel had cleaned it quite thoroughly with his tongue before they had fallen asleep.
“I am sorry that I was not here to greet you when you arrived.” Cas spoke softly as his fingers traced over the bite mark, almost as if he couldn’t look Dean in the eye. “Gabriel had written that you had a delay, and I had hoped to take care of some of the issues here before your arrival.”
“You take care of the whole town Castiel, I understand why you were not here when we arrived. It was difficult keeping myself from this room. Your scent is so strong in here, but my Omega was insistent. I have had a hard time being anywhere else.” It was Dean’s turn to be a bit shy, but he wanted to be honest with his Alpha. “I was afraid that I would not be what you wanted…. You wrote of being faithful to your bride, and while an omega I hardly fit the description of a bride.”
“Dean, you are everything I have ever wanted.” The words were said with such an open and naked honesty that it took Dean’s breath away before he even worked up the nerve to look Castiel in the eye. Now that the flare of heat had died down a little and the rut had released its claws, Dean’s brilliant verdant eyes met Castiel’s cerulean orbs. “I married Amielia because it was what my family required, she was not meant for life here… and April… April wanted my name and nothing more. You- you are everything.”
“I- the fact that I am a man, as opposed to your wives-“
“That is one of your best traits, Omega… I have never been expressly interested in the females of your designation, but the males are quite rare.” Castiel kissed the mating mark softly and brought his hands to Dean’s face to let his thumbs trail across Dean’s freckles.
“My family has three, my two younger brothers and myself. Adam, the youngest, is your eldest brother’s true mate.” The words were whispered in the soft silence.
“Truly? That must be what Gabriel wanted to tell me, he said I wouldn’t believe how things had changed back home. Though I am concerned because my brother told me I had a perversion. I am happy that he met his true mate, as it led me to my own.” Dean couldn't help but grin and nuzzle his nose against his alphas. “You are truly a wonder, and all mine. What did I ever do to get so lucky as to have you as a true mate?”
“When you find out, let me know?” Dean laughed and leaned forward to press soft kisses against his alpha’s flesh. The heat was beginning to bubble under his skin once again, but it was a slow burn at the moment. Just enough to have his omega craving the alpha’s touch, but not enough to be urgent. So for now, the omega was playful in his exploration of his alpha’s form.
The rumble was back, but this time it was louder, more insistent. Rolling to his back, Castiel pulled Dean astride him and let the man explore to his content. “Are you going to ride me Omega? I noticed that you have the legs for it, should you want to.” There was something playful staring back at Dean from the Alpha’s gaze that made him laugh and roll his hips. While he was not exactly where the alpha wanted him, he was in a position to grind down on his Alpha and make him moan. “You still need to complete the bond.”
Dean’s breath caught in his throat as he stared down in wonder at Castiel, “You- you want to wear my bite?”
“You are my true mate Dean, of course I wish to wear your bite. It would be my honor.” Once again there was such naked honesty shining up at him that Dean couldn’t help but smile and tear up a little. He had hoped that Castiel was different and would treat him as a person, he had not ever dreamed that he would get this. That Castiel would see him as a partner and not just his bride.
With a sharp nod and a tear rolling down his cheek, Dean leaned down and placed a soft kiss on the Alpha’s lips. “Of course Alpha.” He mumbled before lining himself up and sliding down his Alpha’s cock. They both groaned into each other's mouths as Castiel bottomed out, Dean twisted his hips and the Alpha closed his eyes. “Cas…” There was a slight whine as Dean began to work his hips, barely lifting them, more of a grind, working the cock inside him against his walls.
For a moment, Dean leaned back and felt his Alpha’s hands exploring his torso and pinching his already sore nipples. One heart stopping moment later the pressure was released when milk spurted across the alpha’s fingers. A sound like a startled moan shot from the Alpha as he lunged up and pulled Dean to him in the same move, bringing Dean’s leaking nipple to his mouth. Each deep draw Castiel took caused Dean to clench down and moan deeply. It was a sensation that he had never experienced before. He knew the milk had come in to keep Jack fed, but it hadn’t been ready before Missouri spirited the boy away. Under him, the alpha bit down on Dean’s nipple and the Omega began a frantic motion with his hips, tossing his head back, pulling the nipple in the man's mouth. The slight pain mixed with the pleasure and Dean felt his orgasm begin to crest, and he had barely done anything.
Wide frantic green eyes opened as Dean whined and looked down at the alpha attached to his breast. The heat was once again upon him, and as the alpha smelled it in the air, he began to thrust hard up into Dean as the omega’s hips swiveled. The whine escalated as Castiel’s hands gripped Deas’s hips tight and held him still, throwing his whole weight upwards in punishing thrusts that had Dean collapsing forward. Reluctantly, Dean’s nipple was released as Dean nosed at the gland in his Alpha’s neck. It was then that Castiel realized what Dean was looking for. He stretched his neck back so the Omega could reach.
Something inside Dean’s hindbrain told him to wait, no matter how desperate he felt in that moment, he had to wait until they were tied. It was tantamount to making sure that the bond was completed, so hold on he did. His mouth and teeth worked over the skin where soon the bond would be set. His nails gripping his Alpha’s shoulder and leaving deep impressions that he would be smug about for days, making the mussels deep within him flutter intensely. Castiel growled out something, hot and dirty in Dean’s ear right before he was able to feel the thickening knot sink deep within and hold. It was in that moment that Dean struck, his slightly less sharpened teeth found their purchase and tore into the flesh beneath to complete the bond.
When Dean next woke, he was alone in the nest, though it was still warm noting that Cas had only recently left. For a moment he laid there and stretched out his limbs, but then he heard someone speaking in the other room that was not his Alpha. A sudden fierceness possessed him. Someone had come to their nest while he and his Alpha slept! Not caring about his nakedness in the slightest, Dean lept from bed and rounded the doorway frame before he could truly think about it. There on the porch was Hannah, staring wide eyed at a shirtless Castiel. The viciousness of the snarl that left Dean’s throat was probably ridiculous, but he was propelled forward until he stood in front of his mate.
For her part, Hannah’s eyes widened and she took a step back, but it wasn’t enough. How dare she come here and try to take Dean’s mate. Dean took more than enough from her before he felt welcomed, but this was Dean’s den. This was his home and he would be damned if some teenage girl thought she was going to take his mate away. “Leave.” The word was growled out as a harsh rumble made its way out of him. “Castiel is my mate . Go.” There was a moment where she looked like she was going to try and fight him. An aborted move that looked like she was going to grab for the door and attempt to challenge Dean. Somewhere behind Dean, he heard Castiel call for him, and perhaps put a hand on his shoulder, but Dean smiled at the challenge and snarled once more. It seemed to get the point across, though Hanna still looked mad about it, the girl left the porch as Daniel skidded around the front corner and began to chastise her again.
As soon as the girl was out of sight, Dean slammed the front door and turned on his mate. “Dean?” The man’s voice was a soothing rumble, but the girl had come here to take him from Dean, and Castiel had talked to her! While Dean was in heat! In their nest! Another snarl left Dean as he stalked forward and grabbed Castiel by the back of the neck and claimed his mouth. Little rumbling “mines” were gasped between deep and desperate kisses. The omega’s thumb brushed against the bite on Cas’ neck and the Alpha moaned. The sound shot arousal through the both of them. Before either of them registered, Castiel had swept Dean up in his arms and carried him back to their nest for the next round.
The rest of the week passed in a similar bliss filled pattern: sleeping, eating, bathing, and mating. On the sixth day, things seemed to settle and Dean was able to register that Missouri had been by a few times to make sure they ate and checked over both their wounds. Most of that day had been spent changing the sheets and starting laundry, cuddling, and letting a stew simmer on the stove. Missouri, the wonderful woman that she was, was going to be bringing the children back the following morning, so that the house could be righted before they got back. Before bed, Dean tidied up as the Alpha followed him around the house.
In Claire's room the Alpha stiffened at seeing the bassinet. “What is this?”
Dean straightened his spine and looked at the item in question. The covers were neatly tucked and a small wooden rattle sat inside. “It’s where Jack sleeps.” Looking up at his Alpha he could read the question in his eyes. “Did… did you not talk to Gabriel? He said he was going to explain… Jack is living here with us.” The answer made Castiel pause before his eyes got wide and he headed back into the kitchen and grabbed the envelope off the table. Sure enough inside was a letter from Gabriel.
Little brother,
You are a hard man to track down. You probably will get this before I can talk to you, and hopefully before you go home and throw a fit. You have a new family member, and not just your little omega. I told you that some things happened with Luc? Well… the idiot did something really stupid and Kelly Kline paid a high price, she asked that her son go to you, because she knew that you would take care of him. I know you were close at one time, and Luc kind of ruined whatever might have come from that. So you have a new sibling for Claire. Jack is the boy’s name, and I hate to spring it on you, but Mike is dealing with some stuff and can’t take the boy. Could you imagine Mother trying to raise a pup that small? Since you were getting a new omega, I figured that you two would be the better fit for the kiddo anyway. Come find me when you get some time, I can explain it better in person. Promise.
Gabriel
“Oh… Kelly, what did he do-?” Cas crinkles the letter a little in his hands before he shakes his head. “Doesn’t matter… how- how old is the boy?”
“Under a year… he bonded with me on the journey, and I don’t think I could part with him… please don’t-” Dean’s voice was so small that Castiel slowly raised his eyes from the paper.
“Why would you part with him? A bond like that? I would never- he is essentially your pup Dean. I would never.” Quickly the paper was dropped and Castiel gathered Dean in his arms, wrapping him in a hug. “I am sorry Dean. I should have thought about that before I spoke. I would never sever a bond that you have with a child. That is barbaric. I would never sever a bond, even between two other people. A bond to a child is special. I am so sorry I made you think that.” Dean’s face was buried in Cas’ neck so that he could smell the truth.
“I don’t-” Dean tried to catch his breath, “what is happening?”
Rubbing slow circles on Dean’s back he helps calm the man. “This has been a rough week for us, we have mated and we are going through the changes that happen naturally when this occurs. We also had a synced cycle, and there was a perceived challenge to your claim. With everything that happened, even the remote possibility of me taking away your pup caused a reaction. Everything is fine, just breathe. They will be back in the morning and we can spend a day together as a family.” Emotions remained high for the rest of the night. It was difficult for the pair to fall asleep, mostly due to restlessness. Eventually though, they both fell asleep in their nest.
Once morning had come to the ranch, Dean found himself waking at his normal time, rising to get started on the day’s chores. The routine was familiar and soothing, something he could just do, and he found himself completing things before he knew it. Then he was inside and starting the stove so that he could make breakfast when strong arms wrapped around him from behind. “Cas….” The whispered name made the alpha shiver and place a kiss on Dean’s neck.
“What do you need me to do? It seems you have a routine.” Cas took a step back so that Dean could turn and give him an answer.
“We used up a good stock of the water, could you fetch some? I can finish this. Perhaps you could make some tea before Missouri gets here?” Of course Castiel could do nothing but nod, placing a kiss on his mate’s lips before collecting the extra water pails and heading outside. He was finishing up a second round when he heard the wagon on the road in front of the house.
Dean must have heard it too as he was on the porch already, a towel tucked into his waist, drying his hands. “Dee! You are feeling better!” Claire laughed after Missouri unloaded her from the cart and she ran straight to the omega.
“I am, your papa helped me feel better. I promise. Did you behave for Miss Missouri?” Claire nodded solemnly, with a face very reminiscent of a young Castiel, as the man himself stepped up behind Dean on the porch.
“Papa!” Claire looked up at Cas, and he couldn’t help but pick the girl up and hold her on his hip. She giggled as Missouri approached Dean with a squirming blanket.
“He’s been a bit fussy all day, missing his mama. Haven’t you sweetie?” With a smile she hands the boy over to Dean. As soon as Jack is in Dean’s arms he seems to settle a bit, snuggling into Dean’s neck. “Well now, don’ you two just make the cutest couple. Your brother wanted to come, but I asked him to wait a few days. He’s gotten himself his own little mess to handle at the inn, and he needs to fix that before running away. You boys…” She rolls her eyes and heads back to the cart. “Bess and Garth send their congratulations, and of course Benny sends you his best as well. I came with gifts if you would help me…”
Reluctantly Cas set Claire down on the porch before pressing a kiss to Dean’s cheek and helping Missouri gather the parcels from the wagon. Dean disappeared into the house with Claire and Jack, setting Claire up at the table to eat breakfast, and then heading to the kids room to feed Jack. His little family was finally all here where they belonged. Castiel must have walked into the kitchen, because he heard Claire speaking with him as the sound of the cart leaving came from outside. His Alpha’s arms wormed their way around Dean’s middle as a chin hooked over his shoulder. “Missouri went back to town, she says she will come by in a few days for tea.”
Dean hummed his acceptance and leaned his head back against Castiel’s shoulder. The embrace was intimate, loving, and Dean felt like he was finally home. This was real, this was happening, and he had found his dream. This little family was his! Claire sitting and finishing a breakfast in the kitchen, little Jack in his arms half asleep against his chest, and Castiel… the man was a distraction, as he nipped Dean’s neck in between small kisses. “Castiel…” Dean whispered, trying not to startle Jack who was desperately trying not to fall asleep.”
“I love it when you do that.” Cas nipped at Dean’s ear this time, his own whisper a rumble. “Whisper my name… makes me think of when I had you breathless earlier this week.” Suddenly Dean felt hot all over, not from his heat, but from embarrassment. He knew exactly what the alpha meant, and how desperately he whispered Castiel’s name in the throes of passion when his voice escaped him.
“Perhaps you could get me to do that for you later, right now we have pups to attend to.” Gently Dean rocked Jack and Cas kissed him on the cheek.
“It’s a promise, omega-mine. I will handle claire.”
Yes Dean was happy, he had found what he really wanted. For two blissful weeks, everything was perfect. Daniel had come by and apologized to Dean once again for Hannah, and Missouri stopped by to regale Dean with tales from town. Castiel, of course, had to check in with the town often to make sure Bobby and Rufus were handling things fine, and also check in with the head hands working for him at the ranch. The second cabin that would be for Gabriel was almost finished when Alfie had come barreling down the road on a horse screaming for Castiel.
“Sheriff!” The horse sputtered to a stop in a cloud of dust as Castiel ran out to greet the boy. “The Daemons are attacking the inn!” Wide eyed Dean nodded to Castiel from the porch as he swung up into the saddle behind Alfie.
“Dean, take the children to the barn, there is a door in the floor of the tack shed. Stay hidden down there until I come back, it has some supplies, but take what you can. The men here will guard you.”
“What about Hannah?” Dean would not begrudge the girl protection.
“She is in town… please Dean.” Castiel looked torn between wanting to help the town and staying with Dean.
“Go Alpha. We will be safe. Come Claire, let’s grab some blankets. We can put them in my fancy bag.”
Chapter 8: A Country Boy Can Survive
Chapter Text
Castiel rode the horse hard and fast into town, poor Alfie clinging to the neck of the horse for dear life. There were shouts from the far end of town as Castiel dismounted in front of the sheriff's office. “Go to Missouri Alfie, Cain would want you safe until this is over.” In his office he pulled out some weapons that he had stashed away for times when he wouldn’t be armed coming in. Gunfire erupted as he slung a bandolier of bullets around his shoulders and calmly walked closer to the inn.
“Well now, if it isn’t the little sheriff who killed my best Daemon.” Allistair squinted at Castiel in the sun. “Come to watch me destroy your town?”
“You can surrender peacefully Alistair, or you can leave now and become a fugitive. The choice is yours, but you will not destroy my town.”
“You are gonna stop me? Your little deputies weren’t much of a fight, they went down easy. You don’t look like much either.” Viciously he smiled and palmed the gun on his hip.
“You have until the count of three to decide. One…” Allistair squared his shoulders. “Two…” The echo of the number bounced off the buildings around them. It seemed that the chaos around them slowed to watch. “Three.” Both of them drew their pistols at the same time and fired off a shot low at the waist. Only one of them hit. Allistair grunted just seconds before he staggered backwards and a red spot appeared on his shoulder. Then all hell broke loose.
Gunfire filled the streets as Allistair stumbled back and out of sight. Castiel advanced on the inn, hearing gunfire but not being able to directly see a shooter. Proceeding cautiously he saw that his deputies were in fact alive. Bobby had taken a round to the knee and was leaning heavily against a support post but Rufus looked to be uninjured. “Boss, they got your brother. I tried-” Bobby shook his head as a bullet whizzed by.
“Gabriel?” “When they found out he was your brother, they came and took ‘im.” Rufus nodded, “Collette has the little one, they are secure.” Castiel nodded and took aim out onto the street where there were a few Daemons attempting to take cover. One shot, and a man screamed outside and went down.
“Secure the town, I will go after my brother. I want to get Ruthie back to Dean and gather some supplies. Once this is dealt with.” Again, Castiel took aim and dropped a Daemon in the streets. The gunfire slowed as the lawmen took out the threats and silence engulfed the town.
When things were clear, the rest of the town seemed to come to life, everyone out of their homes and businesses to help put the place to rights. Cain took control of gathering the dead and wounded, Collette began to administer aid to those that needed it, Garth brought supplies from the general store, Benny brought some whiskey to sterilize wounds, and Missouri passed out salves and bandages. Once Castiel was sure his town was okay, he scooped up little Ruthie and headed back to the ranch. He needed to see Dean and explain that he had to go after his brother.
As a lone rider approaching the ranch, he could see Daniel at the side of the house with a rifle pointed at him. That was until he could see it was Castiel and not a Daemon. “What’s the word Sheriff?”
“Daemons attacked the town, looking for revenge.” Daniel grabbed the reins so Castiel could dismount with Ruthie. “Send a few of the hands into town to help patch up a few windows,” Daniel nodded and headed back to the barn to let the hands know the cost was clear. Castiel too made his way to the barn, though much slower as he realized what he was going to have to do. The hidden door opened and he peered down into the darkness to call Dean’s name.
“Cas?” Dean’s head came into view and he smiled up at the Alpha as he grabbed Claire. “Come on, gather the blankets, we can come back to the house.” Claire came up first, clutching a few of her blankets, and then Dean with Jack and a bag. “How bad was it?” Dean’s worried face looks down at Ruthie.
“They attacked the inn… they wanted to get back at me… I took out one of their men while I was gone when you arrived. They were stealing livestock, hurting people… he challenged me and I bested him but that still doesn’t make it okay. Now they are after my family and they… they took Gabriel.” Cas clutched Ruthie a little tighter to his chest and she squirmed. “Ruthie needs to stay here for a little while… I- I have to-”
It seemed to dawn on Dean all at once, Castiel needed to leave. Castiel needed to go save his brother, and he was going to have to leave Dean and the children here. It was a fact, Cas was the sheriff here and that was his brother. Dean would have it no other way. “I understand…. When do you leave?”
Cas stared at Dean, awe in his expression. “As soon as I can- I have to track them and I want to before it rains.” Dean closed his eyes and nodded tugging Cas back to the house so that he could properly pack a bag for his alpha. Ruthie and Claire sat at the table eating while Jack was napping in the bassinet. The events of the day seemed to be tough on the girls as they sluggishly ate a little, and then Dean let them lie down together in Claire’s bed. For just a few moments there was peace. Looking for his mate, Dean turned and found him in the doorway to their bedroom.
It was easy to see that the man was torn, not truly wanting to go out on this ride, but it was something that he needed to do. His family, hell his whole town depended on him, and it was time to handle these Deamons once and for all. “Cas?” Dean whispered softly as he pressed himself against his mate’s back. Letting the smell of those wild herbs, now dipped in honey, encapsulate him. Feeling his mate’s head fall forward more than seeing it, as he was pressed against him, made Dean’s arms tighten further around him. “Promise me you will come back? I don’t think I can do this alone.”
That made Cas turn in his arms, “Never, Dean you will never be in this alone. I may have to leave from time to time but I will always come back to you. I swear it.” Large hands came up to cup Dean’s cheeks, thumbs caressing the soft skin found there. “I have never wanted to not leave more than I do at this moment.”
“Cas….” Dean whispered once more as Cas leaned forward and pressed a soft kiss to the omega’s forehead. “Make love to me? Before you go?”
While they had been together during their cycle, Cas had held back from full on penetration in the few weeks that followed. The Alpha was convinced that Dean was hurt, or that he would somehow hurt him. Though there was nothing wrong with the gentleness, as Castiel was a gentle lover when not overtaken with rut, this time he knew that Dean needed more than that. Instead of answering, the Alpha pressed a kiss to Dean’s lips. Drawing it out and savoring the flavor of his mate. Dean wasn’t the only one who needed this.
Those soft kisses moved across Dean’s cheek and down behind his ear. The closer the kisses got to Dean’s mating bite, the more the omega whimpered. Eager hands slid across barely exposed skin and gently began to unwrap it. Calloused fingers slid across smooth flesh, causing the whining whimpers to increase. “Cas….”
The gentle touches brought goosebumps to Dean’s skin, as the Alpha’s mouth followed his hands. Warm and wet kisses began to cover his body, tasting and memorizing every sacred inch, needing to feel the connection between them. Dean’s own hands were not idle either, somehow managing to divest Castiel of his own clothes and scrape his blunt nails across the skin he could reach.
When Castiel laid him back upon the bed, and skirted his mouth further down, Dean’s hands found purchase in his hair, scraping nails against his scalp and tugging on the messy locks when the Alpha did something he liked. Since their cycle the nest had been dismantled to wash, though there was something of a nest there, just not as large as previously. There was plenty to cushion Dean’s body as Castiel worked him over with his mouth. Each softly gasped ‘Cas’ was music to his ears. Something that the Alpha could keep with him when he traveled.
With emotions running so high, it did not take Dean long to come. He was unable to buck up into his Alpha’s mouth with Cas holding him down. Cas greedily accepted the taste of his mate. The scent of slick ramped up his need, but not the speed in which he was to take Dean apart. They both needed this, this connection, this moment. As Dean’s breathing slowed, Castiel crawled up his body and nipped at some sensitive spaces on his soft skin, then peppered the man’s face with kisses.
Though Dean felt a little boneless, he anchored his Alpha to him. Holding Castiel’s head still so that he could press his own soft kisses across his face. Lingering kisses on the Alpha’s lips had Dean wrapping his legs up and around Castiel’s as much as possible. Castiel pressed Dean into the sheets as they moved slowly and sensually against each other. When Castiel’s cock found its mark, Dean cried out a moan, clenching down with his inner muscles and urging Castiel closer with his thighs. Instead of holding Dean’s hips still, the Alpha’s hands came up to catch Dean’s hands, lacing their fingers together and holding them above Dean’s head.
Soft whispers of “Cas,” “Alpha,” and “Castiel!” Fell from Dean’s lips between thrusts. For his part, Castiel was caught in the light in his omega’s eyes. Dean’s verdant green orbs were opened wide, dazzling in their brightness and consumed with his pleasure. Each time Castiel’s name was whispered in that tone, it was like a brand upon the alpha’s soul. This was his mate, his and his alone, and only he could bring Dean to this state. The crest of their orgasm was slow to build, but it was just what they needed. Eyes locked, Dean’s legs thrown up over Cas’ hips, sweat dripping, breath intermingling… it was a full body experience. Dean gasped out Castiel’s name as he came, and the Alpha was right behind. Groaning his release into the Omega’s neck and nipping at the bite there as a gentle reminder. They stayed wrapped around each other well past when the tie that held them together released. Staying tangled together until Dean heard Jack making noises in the children’s room.
Neither one of them wanted to let go, but duty called for both of them. Dean tossed on a dressing gown, only after kissing Cas a few more times, before heading out and getting Jack before he woke the girls. Castiel took his time to gather clean clothes and stack them neatly on the bed, just a few pairs, then dressing. There was nothing he wanted more than to keep the scent of his Omega on his skin, so he did not bother with a wash. If one of Dean’s shirts ended up in the pile it was no one’s business but his own.
When Dean returned to the room, he handed Jack to Castiel so that he could finish packing things away in the rucksack that he knew Castiel was going to take. A carpet bag like the one Dean traveled with would be of little help to Castiel on the road. Castiel watched on helplessly as he cradled the baby in his hands and his omega neatly folded and tucked things into the rucksack. Jack cooed at Cas, his little hands grabbing whatever he could reach as the larger man tucked the boy’s nose into his neck. While so young, their scent glands weren’t super developed so he could not pick out a lot of scent, but he would know his alpha. With a gentle rocking motion Castiel walked into the main room and made a mental note of what he wanted changed to the house while he was gone. They were going to need more space.
After a few moments Dean stepped out of the room and headed over to the kitchen with the sack and wrapped up some small things in towels to put in the top of the bag. The sad slump to Dean’s shoulders made him feel helpless, so he gathered some blankets and made a divot in the center for Jack to lie on the floor while he consoled Dean as best he could. There was not much he could do, he did have to leave after all, but he needed to do something. “Dean…”
With red ringed eyes, Dean turned and handed Castiel the rucksack. “There’s food and clothes… should hold you for a few days.” Dean said the words, but would not meet the Alpha’s eyes. That would not do, not at all. Castiel dropped the sack to the floor, making Dean look up at him in concern, and walked forward to kiss him hard.
“Thank you Dean, I would still be lost without you. Stay safe for me, and I will return to you.” The words were spoken with sincerity and confidence he wasn’t sure he had, but they were the words that needed to be said. Once more pressing his forehead against Deans before he pulled away. “I need to go… I will write when I can, so you know I am alright.” Dean nodded as Cas let go and took a step back. Collecting the rucksack he headed out onto the porch and down to the barn. If he was going to be traveling on horseback, he was going to be on one of his horses.
There was a large stallion that he favored, but today he was taking one of the larger mares. If he was to bring Gabriel back, he wanted something sturdy enough to carry two people, and gentle enough to get them back no matter the state Gabriel may be in. Daniel had taken the hands out to town to assist, so he was left alone to prepare the horse himself. A chore he relished in this moment. His inner Alpha was torn, wanting to stay with his mate and his family because this is where he needed to be, and rescuing his brother because that was pack. Up until then he was always sure and single minded, this was new.
The rucksack Dean prepared was tied onto the back of the horse and Castiel rummaged around in the tack room for any additional things that he may need, and tucked them into the saddlebags. Walking the horse to the front of the house, he tied her off to the porch to trade the weapons and ammunition over from the horse that Alfie had brought him. All that was left was to leave, so he took a deep breath and walked back into the house. Dean was feeding Jack, humming to the boy softly as he rocked back and forth in place. Castiel watched the scene for a moment before heading to the small writing desk and scratching out a list for Daniel. He knew that the Beta would keep the ranch running the way it should.
As he wrote, Claire woke and ran to Dean. The tension was high in the house, it wasn’t really a surprise. “Come, let’s see your papa off. He has to go out and bring back your uncle.” Castiel looked up from his finished note and nodded.
“Give this to Daniel when he comes back, please.” Dean nodded as he took the envelope and walked out onto the porch with Claire at his side and Jack in his arms. Each step out seemed heavier than the last, but Castiel joined them. He gave a squeeze to Claire and pressed a kiss to her golden head. Jack was next, a kiss pressed to his little head and a ruffle of his hair while he stared back at him with his serious little face. Dean was holding it together, but barely. Castiel pressed a kiss to his cheek, then lips, and finally pulled back to press a soft one to the man’s forehead.
“Keep an eye on things here for me Claire, help Dee when he needs it okay? I’ll be back as soon as I can.” Claire nodded and grabbed Dean’s hand as Castiel walked down the porch and over to the horse. Once mounted he looked back to his family and waved, and with a heavy heart, headed back into town. The sooner he got this done, the sooner he could come home. The sooner he could wipe the sad image from his mind and surround himself once again with his family.

The town was full of noise yet again, though this time it was its own people fixing the damage that was done. A stop at his office netted him paper and writing supplies and some other miscellaneous things he may need. That done and stowed away in the saddlebags, he headed over to the inn to pick up the trail. No one talked to him as he examined the ground, they knew his capabilities, they knew he would take care of this issue, and none of them would get in the way.
Once he found what he was looking for, he took off in that direction. North, he was headed north, to where he had always assumed the Daemon’s main camp was. It was along this route that he noticed the devastation. It was easy to see that there were once farms and other buildings along his route that had been destroyed by flames. Daemon markings littered the wreckage… though he had never come this far before. Angel’s territory had never come up this far. Pushing his horse a bit more, he made the cliffs by nightfall and tucked them into a cavern on the side.
The following morning he picked up the trail yet again, though it seemed that the Daemons had slowed. Alistair was only a few miles ahead, and because Castiel took to the cliffs, he had the high ground. Below him, he watched as the group split, a small faction with a covered wagon headed west yet Alistair headed North. So that is whom he followed, all the way until he came to their hideaway in the cliffs. It seemed that they had taken over some homes of the native peoples, houses built into the cliffs. Their markings were everywhere, intermixed with scorch marks and holes from gunfire.
After four days, he had them where he wanted them, his horse tied away and out of sight. Waiting until the bright and glorious morning of the fifth day, Alistair stepped out of the home that he had kept for himself, throwing someone out the door with him. It was a woman by the looks of it, broken and beaten. When the shot was clear, Castiel took it. The bullet hitting its mark. The shot cracked through the air and the Daemons scattered, as Alistair hit the dirt. It was almost anticlimactic.
Climbing down the slope, he approached the corpse lying on the ground. From all his interactions, he knew that Alistair was the head of the group, but there were others that answered to him. Needless to say that the little town they had acquired was not empty, though it seemed all the Daemons were scattered. The woman that Alistair had tossed out of the hut was still on the ground and shaking.
“Your leader is dead. The Daemons are no more.” Castiel’s voice echoes in the valley, bouncing off the stone homes.
“Wh-what will you have us do Alpha?” The woman trembled as she looked up at Castiel from her knees. Castiel flinched, noting that the woman was branded on the shoulder with the Daemon’s mark.
“Who are you?” He knelt down to inspect Alistair, checking the pockets of his pants to see if there was anything there.
“D-Donna? I- there are many of us here that were taken. Some are locked in the building below for the Daemon’s use. We lived in the surrounding towns b-before.” Donna’s eyes never went higher than Cas’ shoulders.
“There were towns around here? Those burnt out farms?” Castiel knelt to inspect Donna who flinched. “May I check your wounds?”
Donna nodded and watched each move of Castiel’s hands, he was as gentle as possible. “The Daemons came in and claimed our towns for their own, if we fought back they would burn our homes down. The Men were recruited, and if you didn’t say yes you were-. Women and children were taken back here…. So yes.”
“I am sorry. My brother was kidnapped a few days ago, before the men came back here.” The wounds were mostly bruises and potentially broken bones, no open wounds. “Let’s get the rest of the women and children freed, I saw a wagon and some horses down there, if we can get things settled for you all in the wagon, make your way to Angel. The town will take care of you, I am the sheriff there.” Castiel helped her stand.
“If your brother was an Omega he was brought here, if not he is at the other camp with Asmodeus.” She shivered as she said the name, “He is a right bastard. Lives to torture.”
Castiel nodded, “Where can I find him? His needs to be ended.”
“There is a camp to the south west, a little over a week’s journey. I’ve not been there, but we’ve seen what comes out of there.” Castiel nodded and headed into Alistair’s hut.
“Go release the women and gather what you can, I will be back here in a moment.” Donna nodded and darted down the dust steps. Castiel tried to ignore the weeping he could hear, the sounds of relief as he rifled through Alistair’s things. Most of it was tainted with evil, the whole place smelled of death, but he was looking for information on Asmodeus. Finding nothing, he went down to see how the women were fairing.
There wasn’t much that they had to gather, but all they could muster and the children were loaded into the cart with a few of the most injured. A second wagon was also found and hitched. “Just go straight south, five days by fast horse. Look for Cain at the inn and tell him Castiel sent you. He will know where you can all stay.”
Most of them wouldn’t look him in the eye, so Donna answered. “Thank you.”
“I will take care of the Daemons, there will be no need to worry.” They flinched but a few nodded. “If you need a healer, speak to Missouri. Kindest woman I have ever met. If you do seek her out, can you have her tell Dean that I am alright?”
“We can do that, Sheriff.” Donna nodded to his badge still on his chest. “If you see a bastard named Doug, give ‘em hell for me would ya?” He could do nothing but nod as the women made their way slowly back to town. Once they were out of his sight, he began to search the hideout.
There were plenty of things that he collected, none of which led him to where Asmodeus would be… until he found a room that looked like it housed prisoners. There was a journal on the desk that cataloged the atrocities that went on in this place and showed how to get to the other camp. Pocketing the things that seemed pertinent, he wrote a letter to Rufus and Bobby, asking them to send a small group to gather the rest of the items he tucked away into his hiding place up on the hill. The first thing he did was grab a serape out of his bag. Hiding his badge totally would be best, but having it only covered in the event that he needed it soothed him. Sliding back up in the saddle, he turned his horse westward and began to chase down the Daemons that evaded him.
Asmodeus was his primary target, the man whom he hoped had his brother. That did not stop him however from capturing or killing the Daemons that got in his way. So far he had captured fifteen members and killed three. The three dead attempted to take hostages, and shot first. Castiel was just a better shot. It wasn’t hard to follow the trail of destruction, and he was able to send a letter home for Dean, and his note for Rufus and Bobby a few days before he hit Denver.
For My love,
I am sorry at the way we parted, I know that none of this can be easy for you. You came here not knowing a thing about life on a ranch, or out here in the west, and yet you have turned my shabby little home into a proper nest all while I was away. I never got to greet you properly as was your due, and I fear due to our cycles, I may have rushed our mating as well.
Not that I would change what has happened, for you are the best parts of me. The softness to my absolutes, you fill in all the gaps and make me feel whole. I spoke briefly to you about the previous omega’s that were sent to me by my family and how they were not a good fit for life out on the ranch, but I never explained to you how they were not a good fit for me. I feel that I owe that to you, however as I can not say these things to you, I will instead write them to you by firelight as I rest for the evening. I am to find the lair of the one keeping Gabriel south of the Wyoming territories, though I know it is more than a few day’s journey to get there. I will have the timeto send this to you.
Amelia was a friend of the family growing up, we were close in age and my family thought it appropriate, though we all knew that it was not. As a child she had been sick, and that sickness never really went away. With the weather being so dry most days, it was hard for her to keep hydrated, it’s why the well is so close to the home. It was in an effort to keep her well, once we found out she had pupped though, it was no use. I did not love Amelia, though we were friends, and she knew that I could never give her what some mates had. We slept in separate rooms, until our cycles, and we had our own spaces… we could not be what each other needed.
In some ways, I was what Amelia wanted, a way to leave New York, and of course a way to get a family she could raise. In the end she did not make it to see her family, but I know she would have loved Claire, and she would have very much liked you. As an omega in the society of New York she was used to softness, to being seen as meek… never would she strive to be as strong as I know you to be. Never could Amelia talk back to me because she did not like or did not want to do something, even if it was what I would have preferred. She would have remained silent, and just let things happen. I never wished for that.
What I wanted was someone to challenge me when I needed it, someone to love who I am and what I could do. I am Alpha. My mother saw it as a curse, which is why they shipped me away, hoping to free their name from my burden, but I have lived despite what I think my parents wishes are. You challenge me, you change me, and every moment that I get to spend with you makes me feel more alive than I ever have. Never think, for one moment, I left because I did not want to be with you. I just need to finish this first, and protect our family. Protect you, so that this happens to no one else that I care about.
The fire is dimming and I need to rest. I will see you in my dreams.
Your Alpha,
Castiel.
Chapter 10: Amerillo By Monring (er... Denver?)
Chapter Text
Bobby or Rufus,
I am hoping that the women and children from the Daemons hide away have made it to you by now, but if they are not yet there alert Cain that there are some wandering near our territory. Send out a contingent of men to find them. I have hidden some valuables near the hideout. Five days straight north at a run, In the Bear’s mouth, under the dagger’s tooth you will find what I spoke of. I am sure some of the ranch hands willbe more than happy to go on the adventure.
In my absence please make sure nothing happens to the ranch, I need my family to be okay.
-Castiel.
My love,
I was unable to write last night due to the rain, so I shall endeavor to make up for it tonight. I hope you are well and that the children are not giving you much trouble. I sent a letter off to Daniel to begin building some additions to the house so that we may have a little more room, as you have indicated that you need some additional space for your hobbies and that you would like to use the spare room for Jack as he gets bigger. The hands will help collect the wood and start the plans as I am not there to do it. I did give them a rudimentary design, and I have asked to see if Daniel thinks we can add a secondary level to the home. It would be good to have extra space for the future.
Last letter spoke of Amelia, and how we were ill suited, this time I will write to you of April. If you were to ask any member of town, none of them liked April. Miss Meg especially. I count Meg as one of my first friends when I stepped foot in town. She knew my preferences, and kept them to herself, but with April… she could not. At the time April was sent to me, we were expanding the town quite a bit, which took up most of my time. Reading through some of the things that she left behind, I realized that she had agreed to become mine in order to gain access to the family coffers. Not that it would have been a possibility. When I left New York it was with the intention of never coming back. The Novak name never supported me once I went out on my own, but my name only bolstered theirs.
There was a gross misunderstanding that I would give her what she wanted. I would not have, even if it was within my power to do so, and I think she realized that after only a few weeks if her journals were anything to go by. Used to such a high society life in New York, she was short tempered and not very maternal with Claire. They never got to bond as I have seen you do in the short time I was away. There was never a chance, because April thought herself too good for that. Among her journals she spoke of her plans to kill both myself and Claire, though I stopped her before any real harm could come to us. It was jarring to read something so evil from someone I let into my home to take care of my child. Rough life in the wilds is no place for a debutante.
Undoubtedly when I read Michael’s letter for the first time that is exactly what I believed you to be. Another debutante from New York he was foisting on me to uphold the family name. You are so much more, such a better fit for my life than anyone else he could have sent. I will never be able to thank him enough for letting you go. It may seem foolish now, but I too had some misconceptions, as I am sure you have realized since the first letter I had written. I am a serious person by nature, and your ability to laugh and bring joy into my dull world is something I will cherish.
As to what happened to April, I must confess something that I perhaps should have before we mated, though there was no time. I am what people consider a Full Shift Alpha. I can shift into a wolf form if I need to, and when April went to stab me I am afraid that I shifted and my inner Alpha took care of the situation. Her family was told she had an accident on the ranch, which could very well have been a possibility as she had never listened to a thing Daniel or I ever said about safety. Luckily, being the sheriff they never truly looked into the situation, but I trust that you will not speak of it. I just feel as though you should know. Under the bed is a small chest that I have kept my own journals, and even hers should I need to justify what happened, should you need to read for confirmation. I would not fault you if you did.
I had hoped that after April, my family would understand that I had no need for an Omega, but I am very pleased that they sent you my way. I know that my little town isn’t much, but I do hope that you can feel like home there. As I helped build it from nothing, I am pleased with the people that live within. When they officially named the town after me, I was dumbstruck. Missouri had to make a speech for me, as you have seen I do not do very well with the spoken word. Writing has always come a little easier for me. Having a pack to care for was something I always wanted, and the town gave that to me. While I will always consider the whole town as my pack, you and the children have come to mean so much more.
Being on the road and away from you fills me with fears. What if something happens while I am away, what if you or the children get sick, what if you decide that living out in the wilderness as we do is not the life you want to live? What if you choose to go back to New York to be among what you know? So many fears and worries pass through my thoughts. Especially at night as I sit and stare at the stars hoping that you will indeed be home when I finally make it back. I worry that I am not enough to keep you there, that you will look at my meager belongings and decide you want more. Am I enough for you?
Again, I know my own faults. I am stubborn, and I do have a hard time communicating in the ways that most people do. Societal negotiations are not my forte, and I am often short with those around me when I try to communicate. I do not know how to raise a child, though I have never mistreated Claire, I worry that I was not doing enough for her. Often I feel that I cannot connect to others, but you? You came into my life and I have never felt a stronger bond with another person the way that I do with you. There is something about you that makes me want more than I ever have before and often it is frightening. Wants and other intense emotions often bring out the wolf in me, and yet you soothe my soul like no other. You are something else Dean. My Dean.
I will be praying to come home soon, though this trail is going to be a long one, I am still a few days out from my destination, and my fugitive feels so far out of my reach. Soon, but not soon enough, I will be home to be there for you and our family. Until then, hang onto my words and know that I am with you in spirit. Longing to be with you again.
Forever yours,
Castiel.
Finding Asmodeus was not as easy as it had been finding Alistair, but it was something he had to do. The man was secretive, and even with the journal giving him a rough place to look, they seemed to have some sort of code. However, he found a few low ranking men and trailed them back to the Colorado territories. A week and a half from Denver, if his calculations were correct. This was another hide out in the mountains, however it wasn’t as much in the open. It took two nights of keeping watch for him to be able to slip inside unnoticed and search the place. Hell is what it was. During one of his two nights watching the place, he had overheard that it was to be used as a training camp of some kind where recruits came to make sure that they were cut out to be Daemons.
Some of the things he had seen inside the camp were things that he could not unsee, try as he may in the coming years. No one should be treated as the victims here were treated, and somewhere among these poor bastards was his brother. The first night he snuck in, he was unable to locate Gabriel, but the second night he found him. Tucked into a small cell of some kind, Castiel made note of it and went to find the ones that held the keys for the doors. Taking care of the drunkard was quick and soundless, though there was no real place to hide the man’s body so this had to be quick.
Getting Gabriel out of the cell was a small feat in and of itself. The man was passed out, beaten, and unresponsive. It was not going to be easy going out the quiet way, so Castiel was prepared to make it very loud. They were in a mountain afterall, some sort of mine system. Tucked into a back pocket was something he did not want to use unless it was necessary: Dynamite. Dragging Gabriel along was all he could do for now, taking men out quietly as he needed to, to help his escape. His only saving grace was finding a few other men in the cells that seemed to be conscious and able to help him drag his brother along. There were three of them: Jessie, Cesar, and Ash. Though there were some bodies of men Castiel hadn’t been in time to save as well.
As the small group rounded the home stretch, almost making it out, Asmodeus and a few of his cohorts blocked their exit. “Belphegor, send word to Crowley that we have a law man pokin’ his nose where it doesn’t belong.” A boy nodded and took off leaving Asmodeus and two others in their path. “I heard reports that Alistair was having issues with a town… had to take a look for myself. Saw you there, with a bright star on your chest, not so high and mighty when you go around killin’ are ya Sheriff?”
“Your men are dead, and I have killed Alistair. Surrender.” Castiel spoke much more calmly than he felt.
“Surrender? To you sheriff? Why would I do that? You have been nothing but a thorn in my side since you took over that little town you call Angel. If anything I should be thanking you for killing Azazel and Alistair, they always acted like they ruled the place. Killing my men however? Tsk tsk. I worked so hard to train them.” Asmodeus smirked, “I am a fair man however, how about a duel?”
Before Castiel answered, he swallowed and said a silent prayer for a steady hand. There was no other way he was getting himself or his brother out of this situation without a duel. Asmodeus must have taken his pause for cowardice if the sinister smile was anything to go by. Castiel nodded and stepped away from his little group to put his back to a wall and walked forward. Once they met in the center Asmodeus whispered: “May the best man live.” The Beta’s stench was foul, but Castiel nodded and turned his back to count to ten slowly with each step.
Each of them heavier than the last, his mind playing over and over the memory of Dean just before he left. The love that they made and the soft sounds in his ear. That whispered “Castiel…” seemed to follow him. It was right there as he counted ten and turned to shoot. Asmodeus’ smile was frozen on his face as red bloomed on his chest, which soon turned into shock. The bullet fired from Asmodeus’ gun went a little wide and just winged Castiel in the arm. A sharp zing of pain had him wanting to grab for it, but he waited until Asmodeus hit his knees, eyes wide and confused, before he fell forward and hit the ground.
It took just a handful of seconds before it seemed to register to the other men that their boss had been shot. In that time Castiel had already aimed at one and another shot burst forth from his pistol, catching the man in the knee. He moved as the other man went for the pistol at his side, and shot where Castiel once was. The third shot from his pistol hit the second man in the gut as Cas moved forward and whipped his gun against the first man’s face, knocking him out cold.
The second man was bleeding out, his hands clutching his stomach, as Castiel tied up the first goon. His little group shuffled forward and out the door. Ash stopped at the dying man and punched him in the face before spitting at his feet. “Fuck you Doug.” Was all he could say before limping out with the rest. While his brother had been rescued, there were other matters to attend to. Once again Castiel searched the rest of the hideout, finding there were still some of Asmodeus' men alive and fleeing in all directions. He was going to need more help if he was to handle this mess. Luckily for him Denver was only a two day ride, and hopefully he could get the assistance of the Marshall’s there.
“Get this man to a town called Angel, up in the Wyoming territories, have any charges sent to the sheriff there.” Castiel looked at Jessie, who was the least injured of the group. “If you are needing work or have nowhere else to go, ask around town or find Daniel. He is in charge of hiring for a ranch outside town. They can always use an extra set of hands.” Castiel shrugged and handed off a small purse of coins that he liberated from one of the guards.
“You are a good man. We will get him there, don’t you worry. We are in your debt, though we are unsure if we would be welcome in the town.” Jessie looked over to Cesar who was limping a bit as he checked over the horses.
It took Castiel only a moment to understand. “There will be no judgment in town. Out in the country as we are, what people do in their own homes is their own business.” Jessie still looked skeptical however. “My mate is male, my true mate. I would not dare to look down upon any for whom they love. Our barkeep Benny has a male mate as well, a beta named Gadreel. None would look twice.”
This time there was hope among the man’s eyes. “We could… we could see what we could do there. Who should we say sent us?” Jessie looked over at Ash who had found a cart of some kind, or perhaps fashioned one, and was attaching it to the horse.
“Castiel, they will know. I am the only one.” Jessie nodded and listened intently as Castel gave them instructions. They were almost the same as the ones he had given Donna. “I will take this one to Denver and meet up with the Marshalls there, hopefully we can get this wrapped up before too long.”
Watching the men ride away, Caesar and Gabriel in the cart as Ash and Jessie each rode a horse was bitter sweet. He had done as he set out to do, but now there was more. There always was going to be more wasn’t there. All he wanted to do was be at home, but he could not… so off to Denver he rode.
Chapter 11: Islands In The Stream
Chapter Text
Dean paced back and forth in his kitchen, the girls had settled down for the night just after Benny and Gadreel came by to make sure that there was plenty of water for the following day. A wagon of women and children had come from the west. Missouri told him that Castiel was fine and that he freed them from the Daemon’s clutches. While his heart soared that his mate was a hero, like he had always dreamed he might find, the rock in his gut grew heavier. What was he going to do if Castiel didn’t come back? It was going to be hard enough taking care of the two girls and Jack if he didn’t but now…
There was a knock on the door which was curious as it was dark out. “Dean hunny, it’s Missouri. I brought a guest with me who would like to speak to you.” Opening the door slowly, Dean saw that it was indeed Missouri, and a blonde woman. “Hunny, this is Donna. She spoke to Castiel.”
“Right-o I did.” The blonde smiled a bit, it looked off compared to the color of the bruising that Dean could see on her person. “He killed Alistair, came down after the bastards scattered and let me free the rest of us. Told us we could come here to town and be protected. There ain’t a whole lot of us, but it was kind all the same.”
Opening the door wider he let Donna and Missouri come in, then puttered with the kettle. “What brings you here at this time of night?”
“Dean, I was hoping that Donna might stay with you for a few days. The town is full to burstin’, and it’s all hands on deck setting up temporary homes. However, all the beds are taken.” Dean nodded, of course they would be. The inn had been lit on fire, so that was a lot of rooms that needed to be replaced.
“I have the couch here, and I could bring out more blankets if you need it. I’m not sure how you feel about kids, but there’s two rather rambunctious girls that would love to have another person to talk to.” Dean smiled, with a lightness he didn’t really feel, as he poured tea for two. “If that is okay with you?”
“Oh, sounds perfect. Better than a dirt floor!” Donna laughed, somehow finding humor.
“Good, an extra hand wouldn’t be amiss now either hunny. No heavy lifting for you.” Missouri stood and hugged Dean, “It will all work out, you’ll see. Get some sleep tonight.” Dean nodded and watched Missouri leave.
“Sorry for inturruptin’ your night Dean-o. I will try not to be a bother.” Donna looked down into her mug. As she did her shoulders slumped and Dean saw the burned and raised edges of a brand on the back of her neck.
“Those monsters branded you? Like… like Cattle?” His voice was reed thin as he approached Donna slowly who seemed to jerk and cover herself back up.
“It’s what we were to them, just cattle.” Donna shrugged and sipped her tea. There wasn’t much more to say.
“You can stay as long as you need. Nothing like that will happen to you here.” Dean halted and then headed into the bathing room to grab a salve that he had made just a few days ago. “Here, may I put some of this on it? I burn in the sun, and I know it’s not the same thing, but this soothes it. Your… burn looks red and sore, this might help?” Donna nodded slowly and stiffened when Dean got close, but relaxed with each gentle pass of the cold paste. “There, let it breathe tonight and in the morning I will put more on for you.”
“Thank you Dean. You didn’t have to do this.” Donna looked over her shoulder at him and he nodded.
“I know, but it’s the least I could do when you bring me such good news. My mate is alive, and right now that is all that matters. Come on, let’s get you squared away.” Dean stands and pulls out some extra blankets and lines the small couch with them and of course an extra pillow. “The girls sleep in, but Jack will be up shortly after sunrise.”
Donna looks so relieved to see the couch, something of comfort and softness, and it eases something in Dean. He misses his mate, but he can take care of things here while Castiel is gone. He can do this.
The days roll on, one into another, and soon a month without Castiel is quickly approaching. Of course he got some letters that eased his ache, but it was not the same as having his mate there with him. Donna had been an angel, helping out with the girls on the mornings that Dean barely left his room. Promising him that she was happy to, and that she would take them on a walk to town if Jack was alright to stay with him. Always, Jack was alright to stay with him, even when he was feeling lousy. The babe was easy, a soft and gentle presence, something Dean needed.
As time marched onward, there was news of a small group sent into town at Castiel’s behest. In the group was Gabriel, gravely injured, as well as a few men that were now free thanks to the sheriff. Two of them came to the ranch and Daniel put them right to work. Soon there was a cabin for Ruthie and Gabriel on the property which was just a stone’s throw from the back door. Donna and an older omega named Rowena helped settle Gabriel in and helped take care of both Gabriels wounds and Ruthie. Still there was little word from Castiel. The men assured him that Castiel was fine, there was just no guarantee after Castiel had left the men behind. All Dean had left to do was hope that his mate came back to him no worse for wear.
Chapter 12: I Should Have Been A Cowboy
Chapter Text
The Daemons had him traveling all across the damned place and he hated it. Everything in him was pleading to go back home, he was needed there, surely the Marshalls could handle it from here. Of course he was stubborn, and he made a promise to those farms affected that he would put a stop to this once and for all, and that was what he was going to do. Camping out on the hard ground with barely enough essentials to get him through be damned. He had a job to do and he was not going to let his town down.
The Marshall that was traveling with him was barely doing better and he was still favoring his side after a fall that he had taken. Not that Castiel blamed him, a fall from any height would have hurt at the angle that the man landed, but he was surprised at how well the man rode his horse with such an injury. “You got some nerve, a small town sheriff all the way out here and out of his jurisdiction… but I would rather have you on my side. I saw what you did to that Daemon. Tore him to shreds. I thought that full shifts were naught more than rumor. Horror stories we tell pups to keep ‘em in line, but then I see you in action. Scary sum’ a bitch.” Henrikson grunted and rolled onto his uninjured side to stare at Castiel across the fire. “The hell did you come from?”
“I was born in New York, though my family thought it was best to send me out west as soon as possible. I’ve been traveling and living off the lands out here since I was barely of age.” Staring up into the night sky he wondered what Dean was doing, his pups… were they okay? The letters he wrote were sitting in his saddle bag and at the next town he was going to drop them off so that his family would get them just in case… just in case he didn’t make it back. They needed to know that he was thinking of them.
“Well, I am just going to thank my lucky stars that you are on this chase with me then. Once we hit Deadwood, I’ll talk to the doc there. Hopefully we can get right back on the road after you drop off those letters you’ve been hoarding like they are burning a hole in your pocket.” Henrickson stretched out on his back and covered his face with his hat. “Get some sleep there wolf man. We will hit Deadwood in the morning after a few hours’ ride.”
Castiel nodded, not that the man was watching him. Thoughts drifted back to Dean and without thinking he grabbed one of the last scraps of paper that he had on his person and began to scribble out a note. Dean deserved so much more, but his words were all he had to give at that moment. It would have to suffice for now.
Deadwood was a sleepy town in South Dakota, and the Marshall was right they had reached it quite easily. Splitting ways once they hit the main road Castiel made his way to the post office and sent off all the letters he had with as much haste as he could. The second stop was the general store to pick up more paper. Hopefully he wouldn’t need too much more but he wanted to have it in case. Chasing down fugitives was hard work.
Sending the letters in his saddle bag felt cathartic. The group that Castiel sought to eliminate was almost gone, just a few stragglers here and there. With the help of the Marshall they had taken this Crowley person into custody. They apprehended Belphegor before he could run off, and with his assistance they were able to capture a handful of others. Though there were two more supposedly in Deadwood that he was here to gather. Hopefully he would be home just after Dean got his letters, but he did not know how long this would take.
My dearest Dean,
How I wish I was still by your side. These nights alone on the trail have not been kind to me or my traveling companion. Marshall Hendrickson is a strange man, but he knows what he is about. Our rides have been mostly quiet, but eventful. Just yesterday the Marshall took a fall from the top of a saloon, I was sure he was dead, but the man sat up and groused because his hat was flattened. I think you would enjoy the man’s humor. Such is lost on me, but I can see laughter sparkle in your eyes, and imagine you here with me.
I know we did not have the most time together before I was forced to leave again, but I am doing all I can to make it back to you. The sound of your voice whispering my name is all that I need, and it is its memory that keeps me going. You are everything I could have wanted and more, Omega Mine, how I wish I was back in your arms at this moment. As much as I enjoy taking care of the town… I must take care of you too and I feel I have been remiss since our mating. When I make it back to you I promise that I will make this up to you. Take on some more help at the sheriff's office, and have them do some of the duties I have been hoarding.
Before you came into my life, I never felt all that useful. Doing as much as I have done was really the only way for me to provide, as my instincts demanded. Yes I have Claire, and now you have brought Jack into my life, alI I want to do is provide for them as well. I did not have what I needed in order to feel secure in my Alpha position. You have brought the missing piece of my world to me, my precious Dean, and I will never be able to thank you enough for it. I hope this letter finds you well, and I cannot wait for this journey to be done, so that I can hold you in my arms once more.
Always yours,
Castiel.

Chapter Text
By the time that Castiel hits the town limits, he is bone weary, tired, his poor horse is on its last leg, and all he wants is to go home to his family. There was very little time that he got to spend with Dean and the pups after mating, and it worried him. He has been gone too long, would Dean still be there waiting for him? Just the thought that his Omega had packed up and left, made him stumble off his horse at the sheriff station and tie up the poor philly with shaking hands. So stuck in his head, glaring daggers at the saddle bag that held more letters, he never heard Rufus sneak up on him.
“Sheet, Castiel. It’s been an age, but don’t you worry nun, me an Bobby’ve kept it runnin’.” Rufus slapped Castiel on the back, sending a cloud of dust up in its wake. “You should get on home now, ya family needs ya moren’ we do right now. Take Hank, he’ll get ya where ya need. Go on, git and git some rest.” Rufus shoved him in the direction of his own horse tied on the next pole over and he nodded. Fearing that he didn’t even have the strength to get up in the saddle. Rufus must have noticed, and gave the man a hand with no questions or sideways glances.
The bone aching wiriness lessened only a little as he rode the horse to his home. The short trip went by faster than normal, or perhaps he began to fall asleep as he rode, but the vision in front of him helped settle a little something deep in his bones. This was home, it was where he belonged, and he could see clothes out on the line behind the house. The slight shrieking of children’s laughter helped settle him further as the sound of the girls alerted him to just how close to home he had gotten.
“PAPA!” The shrill sound that would normally make him grimace instead made him smile, as the vision of a blond braided munchkin ran forward toward the horse. Castiel could no longer stay seated in the saddle, and practically fell out of it to catch the whirlwind that was his daughter as she threw herself at him. It was rather reminiscent of when he had come home to find Dean in heat…
The slam of the screen door on the porch made him look up from the top of Claire's head to a vision. Dean was standing there, bright eyes sparkling in the sun, and… and he was… “Alpha?” Dean whispered the words and took a few halting steps across the porch and down to the ground. “It’s really you! You’re back!” Dean flung himself, much like Claire into his arms, though it was a little more difficult for him to be caught. Small feather light kisses were plastered over every inch of skin that Dean could reach as he whined deep in his throat. “Cas!”
After letting Dean smell and feel that there was nothing wrong with him, Castiel pulled back and took Dean’s lips in a deep and commanding kiss. “My Omega… I have missed you so much… I have missed much it seems.” His large hands found their way down Dean’s now toned body to the large bump at Dean’ midsection. “Is this…?”
“We are with pup Alpha… I found out shortly after you left.” Dean seemed almost shy now. “Missouri has been stopping by to help me, and make sure that I am not doing too much. The whole town has been nothing but helpful. Bobby n’ Rufus have even come by to pull water from the well for me if need be. Benny and Gadreel both stop by before nightfall to make sure that nothing needs doing.” Castiel couldn’t take his eyes off the roundness of his Omega. The man was glowing with health and looked as beautiful as ever. A pup! Dean was going to have his pup. Of course his inner alpha was smug again, but this time the beast had it right. His omega was carrying his pup. The man's scent had sweetened greatly over the time that he was gone. Now more than ever the Alpha wanted to carry Dean to their nest and not let him leave for a few days.
Sleep sounded amazing, but standing here with his family is right where he needed to be currently, tiredness and all. What was losing a little more sleep if he got to feel his family right here, real and in his arms after the horrors of what he had seen on the trail. This was precious and everything he ever needed… well until there was a cry from inside the house as Jack woke from his nap. With a soft chuckle Dean began to pull away, but Castiel shushed him with a swift kiss and guided both his daughter and his mate into the house. They should all be together as a family.
The End.
