Work Text:

Malcolm's FBI team was… something.

Something Malcolm didn't really know how to explain, how to describe.

There was Koll. Koll had been there from the beginning. Malcolm was paired up with him the second he was shoved through the doors, and his partner had made it abundantly clear that Malcolm wasn't to forget who was in charge. Koll was in charge. And Malcolm fell into line fairly quickly; something about the man scared him, but not in a bad way. He scared him kind of the same way Jessica scared him - in a 'I better do what the fuck he says or some bad shit's gonna go down and I'm not gonna wanna be around for that' way - and it was the kind of thing Malcolm thought he could stand. He didn't know where they stood in their relationship, though; for the most part, Koll acted like… like his boss. Like his superior. Malcolm didn't mind it too much, it just got a little confusing when the man called him "kid" and started getting concerned about his mental health every time Malcolm was thrown into a supposedly 'traumatizing' situation, so…

Kharis, Malcolm had liked from the beginning. She was tough. Like Koll, she was there from the start; Special Agent Kharis Lambros. A no-nonsense kind of girl who would probably break your jaw for looking at her funny. Things had started off kind of icy between them, mostly because Malcolm was intimidated by her and simultaneously, absolutely entranced by her, but it wasn't long before they fell into rhythm. And Malcolm… Malcolm found himself trusting her. In a weird way, he trusted both her and Koll; Kharis had probably saved his life hundreds of thousands of times. Malcolm confided in her, albeit once he had a few drinks in his system, and found that he always felt just a little bit better after talking to her. She was kind of his saving grace in DC.

Eli Smith. That relationship had started out intense. Malcolm was charmed by him from the beginning, entranced by those beautiful green eyes and that gorgeous smile, and he'd really thought he'd found someone, someone who wanted him, someone who loved him. But good things didn't last for him, and he realized that fairly quickly. Eli's true colors started shining through around the same time he found out Malcolm was the Surgeon's son. Everything had gone downhill pretty quickly after that - and the profiler did his very best not to think about it.

Victor Staff. Malcolm didn't have much of an opinion on him, except for the fact that he could swear he recognized the guy from somewhere. He couldn't place it. Vic was kind of… a loose cannon. Maybe a little more than Malcolm was. He was humorous, kind, funny - Malcolm found his company to be a delight, but since Vic was usually in Eli's shadow, he tended to avoid him during his last few years in the FBI. It was a shame, though - they could've been good friends.

Colette Swanson. Malcolm hated her with a passion, and she hated him just the same. The only joy he ever got out of her arrival was when Koll would grumble that Malcolm was his favorite whenever she was in earshot, and Malcolm would just smirk while Swanson's eyes went dark.

He was almost sad to leave. Almost. He was going to miss Kharis, and he honestly figured he might even miss Koll - but a part of him knew he could handle leaving the rest of it behind.

Still, it was laughable. Malcolm watched his new team - Gil, Dani, JT, Edrisa - and noted every little difference, and every little similarity he could find. And he found that he really didn't miss DC; Kharis and Koll, sure, but he didn't miss DC. He didn't miss the FBI. And he didn't think he would go back even if Koll practically begged him to - but he doubted that would happen anytime soon regardless - because this… this was where he belonged. It didn't feel like it sometimes, but this was where he belonged, and Malcolm wasn't going to leave by his own choice. Still, he wondered how they were; he wondered how Koll was faring with Swanson, wondered if Kharis was okay, wondered if he'd ever see them again and prayed he wouldn't.

No, he didn't want to. DC was something he wanted to remain in his past. The NYPD was his future.

Still, they were his first team. And he wondered.

He wondered what Koll would think of JT, and Dani, and Edrisa. God, and Gil, too. Koll would probably trade Eli, Vic and Swanson for all of them in a heartbeat - Malcolm laughed at the thought one day, lounging in the precinct with Gil and JT, and laughed even harder at the weird looks they shot him, unable to explain what was so funny. God, they'd all clash so hard, wouldn't they? Koll would try to take control, and Gil would shut him down in an instant, and Malcolm didn't think that would blow over too well, and yeah, they should probably just stick to DC.

Still… he missed them.

Unfortunately.
