Inej leans against the brick wall outside the front door of the Slat, crossing her legs on the sidewalk, communicating her nonchalance. Around a mouthful she says, “Waffles remind me of Nina, and the spice will last longer if I chew it. It’s a simple joy. I know those are a physical impossibility for you, but that doesn’t mean the rest of us need to suffer too. Besides,” she takes another monstrous bite, and her voice comes out muffled. “How do you know it’s bad? You’ve never even tried it.”
Perhaps she’s right, he thinks, watching bright red gush at the corner of her mouth. But it’s probably not worth the burn.

What’s not easy is trying not to think of Kaz, who is no doubt buttoned up to his eyelids in this weather. She’s been worried about him being back here in Ketterdam with all the familiar brutalities. She’s been worried about how he’d be. And if Jesper is to be believed, he’s being a fucking terror. She pictures him in his tailored mercher clothes, all severe lines and cool calculation, down to the exact measurements of those seams. Impenetrable. Ready to terrorize all his old enemies like a well-groomed, lacquered up monster.
Or, Kaz proves he's perfectly capable of administering a lesson without removing a thread.

Summary
A summer job at Butlins was hardly prime time telly, but it was a start. Felix loved puppets. He'd been raised on Sooty and Sweep, Orville… Even Rod Hull and Emu. He'd put on sock puppet shows for his parents, who had applauded dutifully, and had clearly hoped he'd get over it. He hadn't, but he had learned to keep his passion hidden from them.
Felix is a promising amateur ventriloquist. Oliver is his puppet who wants to be a real boy. I am forcibly removed from the Butlins Head Office.
