Summary
They came to this isolated colony at the edge of human territories in search of reprieve, a way of putting their broken family back together again. Instead the Strider-Lalondes find themselves in an insular society operating on antiquated rules, and in the middle of an awkward political standoff with their violent alien neighbors.
In an attempt to stop unchecked bloodshed between the two settlements, an arranged marriage is proposed. As the children of the most influential woman in the colony, Dave and Rose have very little choice but to shoulder the responsibilities of their position.
But in politics, as well as life in general, few things are as they first appear. It quickly becomes apparent that both sides might’ve gotten more than they bargained for in the exchange, leaving a variously traumatized bunch of young soldiers and a mismatched group of would-be troll rebels with the task of settling their interpersonal issues and learning to work together. Summary
Dirk, raised to the resistance against the oppressive societal structure known as the Watchers, has been taken into captivity. At the medical facility known as Three Yards, he is fed drugs to suppress his powers and to keep him manageable, and time slips through his sightless soul as he waits for something, anything to change.
After a year, change arrives in the shape of Jake, an awkward boy with a strange golden sheen rippling across his eyes and a painful tremble at the edge of his cheerful grin. Dirk cannot understand how someone so powerful can apparently be so useless - until night comes, and Jake's dreams swallow his whole.
Jake is a puzzle, and for the both of them to be free of their prison, Dirk is going to have to unravel him... and maybe also himself in the process.

On an average evening, Jaquin “Jake” Hardy would be spending time pottering around in his garden - with a pint and a morsel or two to make sure that “working” couldn’t in the strictest sense be used to describe the endeavor. So on this particular evening, the fact that he was indeed in his garden and kneeling by his usually very fine weigela bushes was not too far away from the norm. At present, however, the bushes were not so fine, mainly due to the sprawled figure of one of the Big Folk, as well as a rather unsightly amount of blood.
The strange elf who, among the Rangers of the North, preferred simply to be known by the uncouth name of “Dirk”, had certainly not planned to bleed so vigorously this evening. Nor had he expected, in his wounded state, to stumble from what he thought was blind wilderness right into the well-tended dwelling of a stunned little mortal.
Yet here they were. And, well, someone was going to have to tend to those wounds.
