Kaito isn’t angry at him. Shuichi knows this, because Kaito has always been terrible at hiding upset feelings. When something is wrong he tends to avoid eye contact, avoid speaking entirely, dodging common spaces and making excuses every time you try to communicate. Shuichi has been on the receiving end of that anger before, which is why he knows that Kaito doesn’t feel even a little bit like that this time. After Maki was incapacitated, Kaito strolled over and helped Shuichi off the floor, one arm slinging over his shoulders while the other ruffled his hair. He even asked if Shuichi was okay.
Shuichi grits his teeth and ends up taking the head off the training dummy he’s sparring with. Okay. Of course he’s okay—he’s alive, Kaito is alive, neither of them even got hurt. But Shuichi failed. His first real run-in with an actual threat to Kaito’s life, and he completely fumbled it. Kaito had to protect himself. He should never have to do that, not as long as Shuichi is there.

Shuichi is left guilt-stricken after failing to keep Prince Kaito safe from an assassination attempt. He trains extra hard to compensate... Perhaps too hard.

Bewildered, Shuichi stares up into Dice’s violet eyes, trying to wrap his head around what must have happened. Dice had taken off around the corner, had dipped so quickly Shuichi practically lost sight of him, and then—
Did he double back so quickly because he noticed Shuichi tripping? Heat crawls down Shuichi’s neck and it isn’t entirely from embarrassment. He stables himself against Dice’s shoulders. They are thin and lithe but Shuichi can feel hard muscle flexing beneath his palms nonetheless, barely obscured by the soft fabric of his cape. Dice raises an eyebrow, then carefully tips Shuichi back onto his feet. When the thief retreats, Shuichi is left feeling a bit cold, still unsteady.
But Dice doesn’t turn and walk away. Instead he says, “Did it hurt?”
“What?” Shuichi breathes, before realising. “Wait, no—”
“When you fell from—”
“Dice,” Shuichi groans.

The man looks deep in thought even as he’s walking, carrying a coffee cup in one hand and his cell phone in the other, and his brows are furrowed like he’s thinking about something incredibly troublesome. It’s legit. He’s cute. It’s kind of like offering complementary pizza to a teenager. Like, yes, you can on some level expect them to refuse if they shouldn’t be eating pizza right now—but also? The pizza is tempting. The pizza is really tempting.
Kokichi’s losing track of this metaphor. The point is, his feet are moving before he can tell them not to, taking him over to the most intelligent rival he’s ever had and planting his ass right in front of him on the sidewalk. It occurs to Kokichi to try and disguise his voice, hide his face, do anything to hide the similarities that Saihara will later notice about him in three weeks when he pulls off his next heist, but then his mouth is opening and his regular-ass voice is coming out.
“Hi there! You look smart, can you help me with something?”
