"I promised Lucas we could go on a date after the Vecna thing, and I’ve been putting it off. He wanted to see a movie tonight and must have blabbed to the Hellfire guys. I’m still not sure I’m even going.”
Steve took one of the crispier fries since she preferred the soft ones. “You still aren’t sure you want to date him? Is he still in the doghouse?”
“Oh, he’s earned the date. As much as I hate to admit it, he’s been great during all of this. Super patient and perfect. It’s disgusting.”
This earned a laugh from Steve, “So what’s the problem?”
She ate a few more fries, glaring so hard that he thought she might be trying to disintegrate the table or something. Finally, she sighed, grabbed one of the longer fries, and tore it into smaller and smaller pieces, piling them on the napkin in front of her. “It doesn’t seem fair.”
Steve frowned. Okay, now he was lost. “What? It isn’t fair that he’s nice?”
“It isn’t fair to him. I was a total jerk. I kept pushing him away and blowing him off. Before Vecna, before Billy even. I kept blaming him for all of the trouble in our relationship. I broke up with him like seven times, Steve. He deserves better than that.”

It takes him a minute to realize that he said anything at all as Steve gives him a bizarre look.
They blink at each other for a long, long time while Eddie's brain catches up with his ears, which are catching up with his mouth.
“Now… what do you mean by that?” Steve asks, crossing his arms over his chest.
Eddie doesn't have an answer, because even though he knows exactly what he meant by that, he does not know what possessed him to actually fucking say it. So he stays silent, choosing instead to stare owlishly at Steve, trying to communicate with him via telepathy.
